This school is amazing, so many different opportunities for every single student. You aren't forced to take a path because there are so many more to explore on your own. The teachers are great and get along with the students. The food is actually decent compared to the other high school foods. There's off campus lunch with lots of different food options around you. I am aware Brian Tennison is now Supertindent. In retrospect, former Principal Brian Tennison was the most neglectful staff ever seen at Lane Tech College Prep. I am an adult who is 40 years old. I know right from wrong. Principal Tennison might have shook every Lane students hands while he was in office, he neglected their needs as far as stress goes. There was no relief, no therapist offered whatsoever. Brian Tennison did not care. Plus, he took away all the parents privileges to volunteer at their Prom. I was devastated at that time. Even though, my youngest daughter was unhappy about me not going to her prom. I would have been very happy without dancing and prom dinner. I rather be in the same ballroom with both my daughters' prom instead of dinner and dancing. We survived without it. I do not know who changed the prom volunteer policy. My child goes here and I will say that this school (although once an all boys school) is part of the whole Chicago scene. Set near the old riverview park (now long gone and mostly comprised of a police station) Lane is definitely a hard place to get into but if your grades are up there, you may have a chance to experience a great education. I will never understand why parents who's kid(s) are accepted into Lane Tech did not have their children go there, instead going to a run down school with no academic achievements. I will forever regret not taking more opportunities at Lane, and taking advantage of all it had to offer. Looking back, I realize just how lucky I was to have taken the classes I did as none of my friends in other high schools had the option of taking those classes. I wish I had joined clubs and not ran to work after school every day because I preferred making money. I feel like I'd have a lot more memories about my years in high school, but I have very few. Either way, if and when I do have kids, and they are off to high school, Lane Tech will be the number one choice. Yes, I will make that decision for them! Lane has evolved in every way, and continues to be one of the top schools with thousands of students which is why I can only imagine what it will be like in 10, 20 years and so on. I have no clue what Lane is like today, so my ranking is half as old as the institution. I started at Lane 50 years ago, in 1959. It was the year after it started taking only the top students from the grammar schools. I remember how proud I was to have been selected. I was a poor, Southern redneck who first came to Chicago because Dad could get a job driving for the CTA., which beat sharecropping. We moved away before the end of my Freshman year, but I credit the confidence I gained from my admission and short time at Lane for becoming the first member on either side of my family to have graduated high school, graduated college and law school, also picking up a Master's along the way. Now as I prepare to retire I still remember Lane . . . and still wake up from nightmares of getting lost on my way to science class. Damn it was huge. At least Lane is co-ed now, so I guess the old taunt is dead: "It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a fairy from Lane." read more

My Alma Mater, and my graduating class bought the crappy metal totem pole which Michelle F. photographed. Imagine trying to get from one class to another in this behemoth in only 4 minutes. I have no idea how we did it. Tidbit #1: Although you can't see it from the street, there's a big enclosed courtyard in the middle of the building (behind the clock tower). Inside is the Memorial Garden, which is dedicated to Lane's war dead. The garden is only open to seniors, so underclassman all look down in envy. The nice thing, though, is that because of this, all classrooms have a sunny exposure. Also, on the roof of the building there's a greenhouse. Tidbit #2: Lane has an extensive collection of murals, all along the walls, and in some other places, such as the metal fire curtain on the stage. 66 in all. Some were commission in the early 1900s, for Lane's first building, some were painted for the Century of Progress World's Fair, and the rest were painted during the Depression by the WPA. As a Class of '88 grad, I am partial to my old school. For the 3rd consecutive year, I have come here on Alumni Professional Day to talk to students about my job and the real world out there. It continues to amaze me how Lane has managed to evolve and keep current with technology. What used to be foundries and machine shops have been replaced with a hydroponic garden, computer graphics lab, and a college application assistance center. Kids can take web design and some prerequisite computer science classes they will need later. Thought he exterior of the building is still the sturdy brown brick and I can still find my way through the 4 floors of the H-shaped building with a fully enclosed courtyard within, the place is fresh and energetic. It gives me pleasure to speak to the young, attentive juniors and seniors who want to learn about what real world industry and workplaces are like. After a day here, seeing the enthusiastic teachers and kids, I know this place is a polished green gem in a morass of troubled Chicago public schools. When I hear about failing schools on the news needing to be closed and "turned around", in the back of my mind I can say with confidence, "But not at Lane..." I can say with a smile that they can probably kick the well-funded academic butt of most charter schools. read more

The crappy parts are not the school. They are the people trying to grow up and figure out who they are. The school and the faculty are the best. I still keep in touch with a lot of them. The size and scope of this school are what make it the best. Lane Tech is the best CPS high school in Chicago. It is a good school DESPITE CPS and not because of any support or oversight from CPS. Because of its large size, Lane offers sports, classes and programs that you can't find at other selective enrollment high schools. For example, aside from Chinese, French and Spanish which you can get at any CPS selective enrollment high school (some have also added Japanese and Latin) you can also take German, Italian and Arabic. It would be nice if they offered Polish and Portuguese as well, maybe even Greek. The students who attend Lane are generally nice kids. They are interested in their studies and motivated. There are no gang problems. The school is in a good location, close to restaurants and public transit. The facilities are in good shape. The neighborhood is safe. My reason for 4 stars and such a good review, compared to other CPS schools Lane deserves 5 stars, but if you compare to Catholic or suburban high schools, Lane is a CPS school and because of problems inherent to CPS, Lane is not immune to certain issues. Due to student based/school based budgeting, even Lane Tech will hire the cheapest and least qualified teacher over a seasoned experienced teacher. Your child will be taught by the cheapest teacher they could find vs the best quality teacher. And just look at the principal turnover. The students who go to Lane are "book smart" but they arrived that way. Lane only has average growth on standardized tests. Many graduates don't go to college, many do poorly academically and many are chronic truants. There are also kids who get so many demerits they can't attend graduation ceremonies. Lane does well academically but they don't necessarily educate the whole person. Many Lane graduates don't necessarily have a great work ethic or the best manners. Some who graduate aren't ready for life. I think a school like St. Patrick HS or DePaul College Prep are better in that category. But then again, Lane Tech is free! If you get accepted, do NOT turn them down. read more

I graduated from Lane and the school is pretty good in terms of education. Why the one star? The bureaucracy is making it impossible to attend. Very recent example ---Someone seriously needs to fire the nurse!!! (The older one - I think there is two) She is so miserable. I graduated few years ago and when applying to med school needed my records from her. This old unhappy woman clearly hates her job with a passion! The process took weeks. She could not send or fax the records (reasons unclear - I assume she did not feel like it). It took me FOUR WEEKS to get a simple computer print out. My friend, who was also applying to med school called a week after me. She spoke to a different nurse. She had her records faxed to her job within an hour of her phone call!!! Advice? Please fire everyone who has been at Lane for long enough to develop an attitude of " I will make it as hard for you as possible simply because that's how I roll". Once those ppl are gone I'm sure a lot more will get done and maybe I'll be more easy about where my taxes are going... read more

I'm a Lane alumna too, class of '76. I wish I could give it more stars, but I don't think the program is as rigorous as it was 30+ years ago. Honestly, I wouldn't have wanted either of my children to attend Lane. It's population exceeds that of many small towns, and I don't think the students and faculty care as much as they could about excellence. My son graduated from Von Steuben (Scholars Program) and my daughter attends Northside College Prep. One positive is that it is one of only a handful of high schools that offers Italian. My daughter studied Italian all through grade school, and almost chose Lane because of this one factor. BTW, I was a "Garden Guard" in my junior year, so I was able to enjoy the "Senior" Garden a year early! read more

I enjoyed my experience so much that I decided to make a website called http:www.LaneTechFan.com. I graduated from Lane Tech High School in 1988 and I'm sure much has changed since then. However, since I graduated I still keep actively involved in the school primarily as a sports fan. So this review will primarily be centered from a Lane Tech Sports fan point of view. I'll start out by saying that I've had such life changing experiences during my 4 years at Lane that I felt compelled to still get involved with my old school. I started by going to as many sporting events as I could. I went to basketball games, football games, cross country meets, soccer matches, and softball games. Here is my review on my experience with the games I attended. 1) basketball games - Lane has a great sports tradition of winninng but unfortunately Lane has done very poorly over the last couple of decades in Illinois's most popular sport basketball. The lack of a good home gym at Lane does not help that. For a school the size of Lane, the school gym need to be bigger and better looking. As a result fan support at basketball games are poor. Spectator Rating: 2 of 5 stars 2) football games- this is the crown jewel sport for Lane. I'm sure it helps when the athletic director Rich Rio is also the head football coach. The football team plays the best schedule filled with quality non-conference opponents like Lockport and Evanston. Lane also has a winning football tradition. Now, permanent lights have been installed in Lane stadium in 2006. Games are very exciting and the home crowd is usually near capacity. Spectator rating: 5 of 5 stars. 3) cross country meets- Lane traditionally holds one cross country meet a year called the Lane Tech invitational. It is held in a small park located one block away from the stadium. The meet is usually held in the afternoon on a weekday so attendance is light .Furthermore ,most of the schools are Public League schools. So it is usually a Lane blowout. But, Lane cannot help who is in their conference and this meet is usually entertaining. Spectator rating: 3 of 5 stars 4) soccer matches- Lane won the city championship in 2005 and has a quality soccer program that can compete against mid-level suburban schools. The games I've been to have been attended OK. Spectator Rating: 3 of 5 stars 5) softball games- Girls softball is probably Lane's best sport program. They consitenlty play and play good suburban competition very well. In 2005 Lane demolished suburban school Evanston High School 13-1. Games are competive and the experience is fun. Spectator rating: 5 of 5 stars. Summary: In general watching Lane games are a fun experience for our good sports programs like football and softball. I would stay away form our porr programs like golf and basketball. They're pissed off all the time cuz of how much homework they have to grade. Don't send ur kid here unless your kid actually cares about school. I attended 72-76 and it was a great school then, don't know anything about it now. I would imagine this school would be even more desirable now since so many people with College degrees are pushing a broom and have massive student debt because they chose some dopey field that has no possibility of gainful employment. When I arrived, it was the 2nd year that they allowed girls to attend (females arrived in 1971), although there were not enough of them for a normal 50-50 mix, not by far! Probably because of their late arrival and the school being a technical (vocational) High School, which at the time, generally interested them less than a college prep type school. I had some really great times there and learned quite a bit despite my cocky attitude (gee, what a surprise, an adolescent boy with an cocky attitude?). Since leaving Lane, I worked in a few 2way radio shops for about 8 years learning everything I could before starting the first of my radio related businesses. If I had attended a typical college prep school I don't know that I would have been as well equipped to strike out on my own and not have to work for someone else. The days of retiring from the same company after 35 years with the gold watch like my dad did are OVER! I encourage anybody reading this to do what it takes to be independent, work for yourself if at all possible within your personal makeup. If you can actually look in the mirror and accept who you are and take responsibility for what you do, then you just might be the right kind of person to be successful at self employment. Agreed, took off 1 star for no longer being a tech school. You get exactly what you want from Lane. If you want to spend your 4yrs goofing off its possible, you'll end up with nothing, but if you want to succeed you have more than enough opportunities. Although it is very diverse, everyone tends to stay within their own little cliques. It's a huge and for people that are unfamiliar with it it can be a pain just trying to figure out where you are. lane tech is a decent school, tho i kinda feel like they just added the "college prep" title to their sign... granted, its pretty up there for being a public school, certainly was one of my choices back when i was deciding what HS to attend. you have to have a certain score (was it 85%?) on the ITBS aka-middleschool standardized test to test into it, then a 75% to get in. so its still pretty good... We will put it this way: i was a gifted kid in grammar school, and lane was my "safety" school. However, it was also my 3rd choice if i wouldn't have gotten into my 1st one(or 2nd one). as a sidenote, the population is huge, and its pretty diverse, but also segregated, as many clicks form that are race-based, which kinda sucks but oh well read more

So my niece has to swim for PE and apparently the showers are under renovation. How could the school allow students to swim without showering before or after?!! That is very unsanitary and can cause a lot of issues, such as pink eye and ring worm! Who will pay for the medical bills when this happens? class of 1994 - Yes, wow all these Yelpers are LANEITES!! : ) Remember, track and field, the Cubs Game, Hmm getting to class in less than 3 minutes that was about a block away from your locker. The Bio lab, Chem lab burning, and P.E. - finding reasons to sit out of a game or activity. Chess club, Hawaiian club, Church club, Ethnic club, Science Club, Auto Shop, Machine Shop, Drafting....Yes, all these lovely memories. I did like the diverse classes at Lane compare to Von Steuben - which I attended from freshman - sophomore year. Lane did offer much more as an experience w/ academia, social groups, 5,000 students, and also creative outlets in music, craftsmanship, sports, etc. All in all, I enjoyed my "less responsiblity" days of highschool. No A/C in 100degree heat, no elevator or accommodations if you are in crutches or a cast.. teachers were usually good, except for the few bad apples who wanted to be college professors but couldn't hack it - these few mistreated even students who weren't their own. 4 minutes to get from floor one in one end of the building to floor 4 on the other end was impossible, teachers who were jerks actually tried to enforce that with threats to detention, etc. School has a nice lawn, ok parking, good area for food and etc., the neighborhood is getting better - was partially not so hot when I was a student there years and years and years ago. The place was made famous in the movie Wildcats , and was within a stones throw of WGN TV (Bozo's Circus anyone?). I guess there isn't much to say here. I'm very happy with how school went for me. I did well in class. I had fun playing football and being part of a winning program. I liked the tech classes (sorry I had to knock you down for getting rid of the tech). It seems hard to grade the school I have been away from since 2003. If I had anything to say is that I hope they challenge their students more. I know some smart kids that haven't gotten in lately, so maybe they've raised their standards somewhat. No one should be talking badly about Lane Tech if you went to it 5-30 (or more) years ago. I am a current Lane Tech student (class of '13) and what people say it is, it truly isn't. You CANNOT skip classes for massive amounts of time, because you WILL fail. Plus, you have to do EVERYTHING. My friend didn't do around 4 papers for Honors World Studies and she almost failed. The curriculum is NOT a joke if you are one of the smart kids in Honors or AP, but maybe some of the alumni were just a little "slow." The children all mix in, it isn't just hispanics with hispanics or african americans with african americans or whites with whites. EVERYONE talks to EVERYONE. It IS the 21st century, people aren't as ignorant and racist. And for the most part, the teachers DO care about the student, I was a freshmen talking geometry and my teacher (Mr. Golden) was awesome enough to care and help me. Lane Tech is NOT a prison for teenagers, I, and most of my friends enjoy going to school at Lane Tech. So what I'm basically trying to say is QUIT HATING!!! Lane is a brilliant school for brilliant minds. And if you people giving it low star ratings could see that then maybe you wouldn't be so hateful. Five stars are not enough! Teachers are so personable - the opposite of what you might expect from such a big school!

IF you are bright enough, AND can meet the quota or find an "in" AND if you can get along on the city streets by yourself without a chaperon AND you are self-motivated AND you can walk 8 city blocks in 7 minutes- Why, sugarpie, you will do just fine here! You will go to school with about 4,000-5,000 of your nearest and dearest friends. Even if you are in the lower third of your class in GPA, you will still be considered for scholarships and grants when you are admitted to college. You might not make it to Harvard, but you WILL be admitted to a college without being forced to go to a city college. You will get to class on time, even the one that has you going from the fourth floor east to the first floor west. You will have friends, because there are so many kids, everybody finds at least one friend. You might be stymied and even flabbergasted by the number of choices there are for clubs. If they don't have the club you desire, there is always a faculty member with that interest and three other students to make a new club. As somebody mentioned, ALL the rooms have sunlight, even the former shops. The language programs at Lane are awesome. All you have to do is apply yourself for four years. I do admit it was quite easy in my day (the first 400 females) to simply not show up to class. However, sooner or later, one is going to get caught. (Do they still have in-school suspension?) It was easier to be late with an excuse a lot than to ditch for 47 days (my old record). It was a little harder to get past security to sneak out for lunch. And whoever said that if one does not take AP and Honors, one will be doomed to classes with dummies- SHAME ON YOU. Everybody is there to learn. Everybody has something to contribute. Watch for that teachable moment from somebody you might consider to be a little less intelligent than you. It might make you a little more humble. Who should not go to Lane if given the opportunity? *People who can't handle crowds. I saw people cry on the staircases between classes because of this. Better you know now, not everybody is polite, and even the most polite are sometimes harried. Getting to class can be traumatic if one is not prepared. *People who are claustrophobic. Despite its size, Lane is broken up into a lot of small spaces. There are no schools of loft design as far as I know, but you might need bigger rooms. *People who don't have a legal handicap and can't get to class in four minutes without an excuse (not to be confused with an excuse such as being needed for a service organization). *People who need to be prodded to get anything done. *People who cannot study on their own without parental involvement. *People who are extremely disorganized. *People who do not have some stable, consistent adult mentor. It is very hard to get through Lane without parental understanding and support. Some parents are jealous of their own children. Some parents are over-involved in their teenagers' lives. Lacking that consistent parent who understands the Lane process, a caring adult who understands and can mentor would be a good substitute. Without some caring adult, it is near impossible to complete four years at Lane. Don't count on the counselors. It is not part of their job to hand-hold students every day. Parents, if you are not willing to let your child come to Lane early and stay late beyond his or her schedule, if you are not willing to put up with more homework than the average school, or if you really don't want to pay for necessary stuff the first two years, then please, send your child someplace else. Don't expect much out of your son or daughter wherever he or she attends high school. *People who have trouble seeing the big picture. *People who need the structure of uniforms and classes as small as possible. These may be people who like crowds too much, as they tend to socialize over study. * People who have the opportunity to go to private school and not break their parents' budget in the process. *People who are so self-motivated that they learn at a rapid pace, faster than honors and AP are taught at Lane. For you, I highly recommend K-12, Olympus High, or one of the online state university high schools. *Lane does not have a program that interests you. This is highly unlikely, but Chicago affords a lot of programs. read more

Not a bad school but not a great school. I am an alumni and since the school has lost it's "tech" and embraced the "college prep" of the new higher profile schools such as Walter Payton or North-Side I'm not quite up to date on the latest greatest news. That being said because of the schools huge population make sure your not sending your kid who easily falls through the cracks and will get lost in the system without receiving the attention they need (hopefully you know your child well enough). Also ask if they have gained a newer younger staff of teachers that aren't bitter about teaching and holding on to every last bit of tenor they can. As far as public schools go this is def. one of the better ones in the city and I think given the right personality your child may succeed and take away some pretty good life lessons along with a good education. No one noticed i wasnt in school except my "friends". Some of those kids are full of bull shit sayin they will always b there for you but they all lie. When u try to reach them they dnt answer back. The Drivers Ed office at Lane is unbelievably inefficient. It took me from the beginning of sophomore year to about 5 days before I turned 18 to get these guys to get their act together and properly submit all of my paperwork and information. It is unbelievable that it took so long. Avoid drivers education at lane tech if possible if you are coming from another school, they are horrendously inefficient and incapable of doing their job fully. Go to Mather or somewhere else, private drivers education school if you have to, just dont go to Lane Tech, they will send you chasing your tail for years, always leaving just one thing incomplete so that you have your license dangled infront of your face repeatedly, like I did. Do not go to Lane Tech to do drivers ed, you will be continuously and constantly deluded by the inadequacy of their program and those who run it. read more

Definitely not for students looking for any type of assistance. If you can do it all yourself, this is the school for you. You will lose weight running around from office to office trying to take care of business. When you look up bureaucracy, a pic of Lane appears. While I'm all for doing things for yourself, there comes a time when folks at Lane need to actually do something. Alas, that's when the real problems arise. Things do not get done here in a timely fashion, if they get done at all. Being one of the largest schools in the state for over a hundred years, one would think they'd have a better system for completion of needed forms, recs, the basics, etc, but they do not. Lane, you have some great teachers there. Not enough, however. A couple of caring folks. However, not enough by a longshot. I sense folks just going through the motions at this school while waiting for the bottom to drop out, pension, pink slip, death, or something. Shoulders shrug each and every time students ask questions. Lane teachers and administrators will probably end up with permanent shoulder-shrug disease. Sarcasm and meanness is the order of the day at this school. They spend more time telling you what they CANNOT do than anything else. Sad state of affairs. Our kid had a choice of other schools but wanted to go to Lane for diversity and a variety of clubs and activities. It ain't worth it, trust us. If your kid can get in to another selective school, bypass Lane. Wish we had. read more
