I really appreciate that Dr. Shah can relate to me as a mom of small children and provide recommendations, not only as a medical professional/expert, but also with that momma perspective. As far as after-hours, we had a wonderful experience with Dr. Whited. He was very personable and calmly evaluated our daughter after she fell and hit her head. He concluded that she was fine and sent us home, but told us to call him if we noticed some specific signs throughout the night. The next morning, he called right before he went into surgery just to check on our daughter. That meant so much to me and my husband. He also made sure to communicate with Dr. Shah regarding the incident and she checked in that day as well. Oh, and I cannot write a review without mentioning their AWESOME nurses, Alli and Erin. Both are great at their jobs! My daughter especially adores "Ms. Alli." :) The receptionists/administrative assts are also friendly and helpful (There is one in particular who always brightens our day, but sadly I cannot remember her name! She usually sits on the far right). My only negative thing to say about BSW, in general, is that you cannot reach your clinics directly and have to call the main line every time. For example, if the clinic calls with lab results and you miss it, you must call the main line and the representative has to call the clinic to let them know you called back. Then you have to wait again for them to call. That can be a little frustrating at times. However, this is not the clinic's fault.

I've had…read morefamily members be hospitalized here both in the med center and the rehab across the turnaround entrance, and when I come to visit I sometimes pop into the cafeteria to get something before going to see them. They have several parking garages that offer short term parking for free (like 30 min or less), but otherwise unless you have validation, you do have to pay. The spots are kind of small and so are the signs in the parking garage, so pay close attention to make sure you're driving in the right place. Overall though, this is a pretty good med center in my opinion that offers most of the major medical subspecialties you may need for your care. The inpatient rehab is also one of the best in Austin, and they are one of the only facilities that offers a driving test if there's a medical concern for someone's safety re: driving (e.g. in a patient with cognitive impairment/early dementia).

I came to the hospital because I was experiencing significant pain and was looking for help. I explained that the medication I had previously been prescribed a few days earlier was not helping and that I was waiting for my PCP appointment because that was the earliest opportunity I had to be seen. Unfortunately, I left feeling as though my pain was not taken seriously and that the staff did not genuinely want to help me. The doctor on this shift, a Hispanic female, made me feel extremely uncomfortable throughout my visit. I cannot speak to her intentions, but the way I was treated left me feeling profiled, dismissed, and judged rather than cared for as a patient. I was not given meaningful relief for my pain, and I left feeling worse emotionally than when I arrived. The experience actually started at the front desk/nursing area. A Hispanic female nurse/front-desk employee with tattoos referred to me as "pinched nerve" rather than by my name. She literally said, "Oh, I'ma go get pinched nerve." I understand that my diagnosis may have been noted in my chart, but I am a person--not a diagnosis. Being referred to by my condition instead of my name felt extremely disrespectful and dehumanizing. Shortly before that, I also overheard her say, "I should have called in." I understand that healthcare workers can have difficult shifts and may be overwhelmed, but patients should never be made to feel like their presence is an inconvenience. I went to the hospital because I was in pain and needed medical care. I expected to be treated with compassion, dignity, and professionalism. Instead, I felt dismissed and uncomfortable, and ultimately my pain was not adequately addressed. This experience has completely changed my opinion of this location. I will not be returning to this hospital, and based on my experience, I would not refer anyone I care about to this specific location. Patients deserve to be treated like human beings regardless of their background, appearance, diagnosis, or circumstances. If you are working in healthcare, please remember that the person sitting in front of you may already be scared, hurting, exhausted, or vulnerable. A little compassion and respect can make an enormous difference.

I went to this clinic as a new patient for a general wellness check. I also had some hip and back…read morepain that I wanted to get checked out. After waiting an hour past my appointment time, I saw the PA, who was nice enough but clearly rushing from appointment to appointment. I had blood work done and a follow-up appt was set up in two weeks to go over results. At my follow-up, I waited 2 hours and 45 minutes in the exam room before the PA could see me. She again seemed rushed and flustered. The first thing she told me after apologizing for running behind was that I could access my lab results online. She had little more to say about my lab results. It easily could have been addressed in a phone call, but we still needed to do x-rays because the machine was down during my first visit. Based on the X-rays that day, the PA ordered more blood work and set up a third visit -- this time with Dr. Graciela Leija. Between the second and third appts, I called the clinic multiple times, trying to get details on what my out-of-pocket costs would be so far. I was told the person who does the coding hadn't gotten to my paperwork yet and I should call back. The following week I asked to speak to the billing dept, and I finally got a call back a few days later. The person in billing told me there was no billing activity under my name and she couldn't explain why. This was after two visits, two blood panels and a set of X-rays. I asked the clinic if I could just do a phone call instead of a third appointment, but I was told they don't do phone calls. Even though I was concerned about what it was costing me, I went in for a third appt and met with Dr. Leija. I waited 1.5 hours past my appointment time before I got in for a bone density test and then another hour before I saw Dr. Leija. She spent maybe 5 minutes with me. It was her first time to meet/examine me. She had no questions for me, and I didn't even get on the exam table. We were supposed to discuss the results of the X-rays, blood work and bone density test results. Instead, Leija repeated information I'd already heard from the PA during my second visit. She said she wanted to refer me to a couple specialists and send in a prescription. When I asked more clarifying questions, she seemed impatient with me, and I didn't hear any clarity in her brief answers. She kept shuffling her paperwork like she was ready to wrap things up and get to her next patient. When I asked her about the bone density results, she pointed to the paperwork in my hand and said it's all summarized there. I could read it. When I told her my concerns about what all this was costing me, she said that was handled by a different department and shrugged her shoulders as she exited the exam room. After picking up the new prescription, I read the insert to learn about the drug and discovered I have two conditions that indicate I should either not take the drug or talk with a doctor before taking it. Leija would have known this if she had reviewed my chart for medications I'm currently taking or asked me if I'm having any dental work done in the coming weeks. My plan is to transfer all my labs, x-rays and test results to a more competent, trustworthy doctor. The one silver lining is that the Eastside Clinic lab techs and nurses are very personable and good at what they do. I hope they get to work for a physician who is worthy of them someday.

Called in incorrectly (non-fillable quantity at pharmacy) THREE times......had to go in in person to get it ironed out after my mom went five weeks without insulin (!!!). Insanity. It just takes DAYS and DAYS and DAYS and CONSTANT phone calls to get medication refills, referrals submitted, pre-authorizations completed, etc....no one ever calls you back even if they say they will- you have to hound them for basic communication. The *constant* delays produce a really negative impact on patient experience. It's an actual part-time job dealing with this practice for my mom's senior care. It doesn't help that every time I call in I speak with someone different, like a call center, who all seem to do a really poor job at communicating patient needs to the actual healthcare team. You hear 5 different things from 5 different people for every issue. It's just overall a disorganized mess; a wild goose chase to nail down what is very basic care. Exhausting and frustrating.
