There are two good things about this school…read more.. Okay, there's probably more than that but there's definitely two that I know of for sure. 1. Ms. Vivian is probably dead and therefore no longer part of their staff. She was evil incarnate when she was working here (I should know, I had her for kindergarten). How the physical abuses got past the administration are beyond me, but this was a different time, and she was horrible. 2. Ms. Cook no longer works here either. She was a redheaded demon. No, seriously. I corrected her on her grammar when I was 12 or so (Mr. Matthews was a good English teacher) and she pretty much tried to shoot me with flaming arrows. Ever since then she would make up random things about me that were totally untrue just to get me in trouble. I hope she's dead too, really. Anyways, there still were plenty of great teachers here in my day; Mr. Matthews, Ms. Green, Ms. Ehardt, etc. But none of them work here now either. I guess since most of this stuff is irrelevant now, it's probably not very helpful. However, if you are considering sending your kids here for the Christian aspect I should tell you, they also did such a good job of teaching me to think independently that I experimented with Pagan beliefs in high school and definitely became an Atheist in college.

The counselors take WAYYYYY too long to talk to you, even if you pick a level one emergency on the form (which i did in feburary, it is now almost may). Recently, a student was shoved into a locker, and the students responsible only received a two-day suspension. I'm concerned that this punishment isn't strong enough to ensure student safety. The quality of the food is also worrying. I've seen black spots on some items, and once the milk served was expired and starting to curdle. When these issues were brought up, the staff said it was "normal," which was very concerning. There was also an incident where a student's parent contacted the office with a simple question about a math book, and the conversation reportedly turned hostile toward both the parent and the student. I believe respectful communication is important, especially because families support the school through their taxes and fees. If you are able to send your children to schools outside of Van Dyke Public Schools, please do. They have suspended my child from school for forgetting his ID. He did not cause harm to others, he has never been in trouble, he has never hurt anyone, or caused problems. He is already struggling with his academics and they suspend him from school for an ID violation. Needless to say, his ID is more important than his education. He has been attending this school for the entire year. They have a file with my son's picture in it. Honestly, they could not have given him an IN HOUSE suspension...something that makes more sense than preventing a child from learning. He will miss days of classes and learning in which will set him back even more. I am disgusted with how they run the schools in this school district. They make the children's education last, not first. I will be contacting every government official I can think of because of this. I speak on behalf of many parents who send their children to these schools. This is not the only ridiculous act this school has done. Children are bullied on a daily basis without teacher intervention. I can not wait until the school year is over so I can send my child elsewhere. My daughter already attends a high school out of district due to the many problems Lincoln High School has.

I volunteered all the time and NEVER met another parent -- even if they were sitting right next to me. Not being Catholic himself, my husband wasn't sure if he liked the idea of Catholic education ("Public school was good enough for me!"), but once he toured the school and met the other parents HE chose this one! In my first 10 minutes at IC, I met 50 new people! They are very warm and welcoming and parents are encouraged to volunteer whether in the classroom or behind the scenes. We appreciate the on-site HOMEMADE lunch and after-school care programs too. We have been welcomed with open arms as a family, not as a checkbook. Now two of my children attend the school and receive a top-notch education in a safe and warm environment with a great student-teacher ratio. My third child can't wait to start! I wouldn't think of sending them anywhere else.

Their actions make it clear that outsiders are not welcome or included. If you care about your child's well-being, this is not the right environment. This kind of environment can be very damaging. It will traumatize your children. No child deserves to feel bullied, excluded or unwelcome. Their actions do not reflect genuine Christian values, and they seem insincere in their faith. FYI: Many of them enrolled in this school to learn Ukrainian language, not because they care about God or Christianity.
