A few of the Purple Cow's specialties include: - A huge collection of vintage postcards, kept in old library card catalog drawers. I love to sift through them and see what vacation spots used to look like. And it's fun to read the used ones...see what kinds of messages people used to send to loved ones back in the day. - Antique hardware. If you're in the market for hooks, pulls or doorknobs, this might be the place for you. They usually don't come in sets, so if you like an eclectic aesthetic, that's a perfect place to purchase items for your house. - Signs. There's a huge, neon parrot sign that I inquired about. It's not for sale, but most of the signs are. There's old street signs, signs advertising products and a random arrow that directs people to the restroom. - There's also a large bookshelf of sports memorabilia near the register. Personally, sports anything doesn't pique my interest. But my boyfriend, who's an avid baseball card collector, said that the collection was pretty interesting. On my first visit, I purchased a framed "paint by numbers" of a ship at sea for our new apartment. It cost $5 and hangs on the wall next to a framed President Garfield on our entry room wall. If that gives you any indication of what kinds of antiques I'm into, then you'll understand why I love the Purple Cow.

The Alton Antique Center is the antithesis of this! Its fun and bright as soon as you hit the doors. It smells fabulous inside and is like walking through a luxurious museum of the most amazing things from around the world. I was literally taken aback by how gorgeous it is inside. Their inventory is so far off the beaten path that even if you aren't in the market to buy antiques you should stop in and see the beautiful treasures they have brought together. Stopped here expecting a fun roadside antique stop, but it feels more like a spectacle than a…read morefunctional store. The place is enormous--easily something you could wander through for hours--but its remote location makes it feel disconnected from any real customer base. It gives off more "curiosity destination" energy than a place people seriously visit to shop. The vendor setup adds another layer of friction. If you're interested in something, you can't just talk to someone nearby--the employees have to track down the individual vendor and call them. That might be manageable if there were flexibility on pricing, but even with what appears to be minimal buying activity, there's little to no willingness to negotiate. It creates a strange dynamic where items sit, interest is low, and yet prices remain firm. Another noticeable aspect is the store's heavy lean into political messaging. There's a significant amount of merchandise as you enter openly expressing admiration toward Donald Trump and depicting Charlie Kirk in a particularly positive light. Regardless of personal views, it's hard to ignore how prominently this is featured, and it shifts the tone from a neutral antique-hunting experience to something more pointed and divisive. Overall, it's an interesting stop if you're curious and passing by, but if your goal is to browse antiques with a chance of actually buying something at a fair price, it may leave you frustrated.

She helped me find items I was needing and put a few items on consignment for me. The only thing I recommend don't plan on spending 15 mins in here, plan on being there for 30-45 mins since she always has new items. She has everything you are looking for from wall decor to dressers. I highly recommend taking the trip to Mascoutah to check out the store. She also does interior design for a great price.
