St. Sleepy.
St. Burgs is hidden, you can't wander in by accident. It's surrounded by apartment blocks away from the rest of the world with city views. This doesn't stop this burger joint from becoming busy, it's rocking when we were there on a school night.
The menu is short and sweet and they even do fried chicken wings. The staff are friendly and inside is relatively clean (although, tables take a long time to be cleaned, staff apologised) that's reasonably no thrills. Not many seating options, but enough to make smart use of the room outside.
We ordered the Durger and the Double D with fries and Nutella and salted caramel shakes. The burgers had Australian grass fed beef patties, American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, gherkin relish, 'durger' mayo & smokey sauce.
St. Burgs is an interesting establishment, the burgers taste like 8bit and the fries like Schnitz.
The smashed patties are cooked well, slight crunch with every bite. Cheese is oozing everywhere, getting stuck in your teeth kind. The sauce is a different take, it's tasty, but there wasn't enough of it. The bun holds its own, but the entire affair is an oily one, with the all-too familiar great first few bites, but soon becoming overly tedious. The sleepy factor doesn't wear off for a good 20 minutes later. By the end of it you're screaming for some salad and I wished the meat, cheese to sauce ratio was balanced. The fries were great, best chips I have tasted since Schnitz (but it tastes just like it).
The Nutella and salted caramel shakes were delicious. They have the right balance and not overwhelmingly strong. Perfect with a burger that would put you to sleep.
I'm torn between the burgers. There's a good thing here if you love sleepy burgers, but for me, a burger needs to do more than to put me to sleep. The cheese shouldn't be the main attraction and needs to compliment the burger, the balance of sauce needs to be right and there's too much oil on the bun. The smashed patties lose some flavour compared to a thicker cut, but they both exist for different tastes.
A comparison of different burgers that do this well are the Theo from Huxtaburger and the Beef Burger from The Beer and Burger Bar.
Recommended if you love sleepy burgers (add +1 Yelp star), otherwise, you might be disappointed. I'll be back to try the fried chicken burger and the wings! read more
