We are incredibly grateful for the Northwest Montessori Community and truly LOVE having our…read morechildren be part of such a rich, multimodal, engaging, and child-led learning environment. Our first child began in 2021 at two and a half years old in the primary multi-age classroom. It has been wonderful to witness how the older children naturally care for and mentor the younger ones. As each child grows, they are thoughtfully observed and guided with developmentally appropriate lessons that gently challenge them toward greater independence. It is amazing to see children helping one another tie aprons, thread sewing needles, practice counting, sweep the floor, play sound games, and engage in meaningful conversation. The classroom culture fosters confidence, collaboration, and genuine joy in learning. The teachers are exceptionally well trained and committed to ongoing professional development. They are passionate about Montessori education and truly take the time to know each and every student as an individual. They also organize frequent parent partnership events that help families better understand the Montessori approach while building strong connections within the broader school community. When our second child turned two and a half, he was welcomed with open arms. Even before officially joining, he already felt connected to the school. Now in his second year, he is thriving. Our oldest is currently in the lower elementary program and is always excited to go to school each morning. He often wants to stay late to take full advantage of the enriching afterschool offerings, from comic book creation and cooking to putting on plays with friends. Northwest Montessori has nurtured not only our children's academic growth, but also their independence, confidence, creativity, and compassion. We feel deeply thankful to be part of a community that supports the whole child and creates such a joyful foundation for lifelong learning.

Ballard High School - Ballard Gym

Ballard, Phinney Ridge

Ok I'm going to balance the bad reviews with some realism. High school is rough for some and can be…read morea difficult time. However, my experience at Ballard grew me into a successful adult and the caring staff and well planned curriculum prepared me to excel at university and beyond. There will always be all sorts in high school, but Ballard did a wonderful job preparing me to be a contributing member of society. If I still lived in Seattle I would send my own kids here.

One of Ballard's fellow students here--just thought I could pitch in my two cents about this place…read more I think it'd be good to get to know this place from a students point of view. I've been going here for two years now, currently in my Sophomore year which has been an interesting journey. I had a few first hard months when I got here because a majority of my friends had gone to Ingraham. I quickly became familiar with the building as it's pretty geometrically shaped and easy to navigate. I had no trouble finding my classes and the "pods" as they call them are very easy to find, same with the classes within this pods. The teachers though, are really a hit or miss. You either get a fantastic teacher who is willing to interact with their students and engage academically as well as socially with them--at the right time of course. Then you can wind up with someone that doesn't have any charisma or, by the looks of it, no motivation to teach at all. I imagine that there is a middle ground somewhere in there but from my experience and others, it seems to be one or the other. The admin, for the most part, are amazing. Extremely helpful and most of the time, can come to a resolution to whatever you're dealing with. My counselor, (which is curated by last name) Mr. Kramer was very helpful when I came in to talk about my classes and succeeding academically. He gave me insight into what could be best for me to do to achieve and I think it's worked out great. Even though I did have a speed bump with one of the VP's, I can still say that the admins are great. Now, it's not really my place to tell someone how this school is by the way the people are because everyone has different personal experiences, but there is one large recurring problem in this place. The drug and alcohol abuse is extremely prominent and is honestly something I hate having to deal with. I know what the adults will say; "it's high school, people will experiment." At the level it's at here, this isn't experimenting. I get when students want to try marijuana or cigarettes but I think it's well past experimentation when you have kids dealing cocaine, meth and other hardcore drugs right outside at the bus stop. Same with the buying and selling of alcohol, it can happen right in front of a faculty and they'll do nothing, at most just give the kid a slap on the wrist. The overall environment of this school is gloomy. I can have fun but at the same time it's just sad. There are classrooms with no windows and the tint of the tungsten lights can just put you to sleep. That is why I enjoy being on the second floor where windows line of the top of the hallways and let some natural light in. Anyways, thanks for reading this if you do.

The assistant head of school and interim head of school are very accessible, responsive and communicate effectively with staff, faculty and families. The board of trustees has a strong vision for the school rooted in its mission. We really appreciate the integrated curriculum featuring multiple specialist classes: music, health and fitness, creativity lab, science, library, Spanish, art. In the creativity lab, our children routinely have projects incorporating engineering, design, critical thinking, problem solving, coding, animation and robotics. Teachers regularly collaborate on project based-learning opportunities. The experiential learning takes the learning beyond the classroom. My daughter's grade has five field trips planned this year. Overnight grade-level trips begin in 3rd grade and by the time students graduate they have participated in a total of 5 overnight grade-level field trips around the Pacific Northwest. The trip to Mountain School at the North Cascades Institute was my son's favorite. All of these are included in tuition and covered by financial aid plans. The k-2 and 3-5 learning specialists are very dedicated. My 2nd grader has benefitted from extra academic support in the classroom. My 5th grader has received additional enrichment in math and language arts since he has surpassed grade-level benchmarks. The admissions director provides individual support to families as they embark on process of applying to independent middle schools in 5th grade. We found the community to be warm, welcoming and very engaged. Our family has made many lifelong friendships through the school.

It was a scary jump to go from our neighborhood school, to a private school. We soon came to realize that this community was very similar to our public school in that families were kind, grounded and welcoming. Moreover, the faculty had the ratios and resources required to give individual attention to our children and support their educational needs. We now have two graduates who have stayed on the independent school path and both made it into the middle school of their school of choice. The education that they received at Meridian certainly set them up for this success!
