My son has attended St. Barnabas since Kindergarten and is now in Middle School. The teachers are wonderful, and we are so thankful for the kindnes they have shown our family. They have made every effort to provide an outstanding education, provided while modeling the love of Christ. If the teachers were running the school, I would give them five stars! If you are an intact family this school might work for you. However, it would be my recommendation that any parent in a blended family considering sending a child to this school should keep handy the phone numbers of the Office of the Bishop and the parish Rector to report insensitive behavior and unkind treatment of non-resident parents, especially fathers, by the school Administration. Hopefully additional training and guidance can be provided to improve stewardship in the role of this school with families and children who are hurting. We do not believe that St. Barnabas is a shining beacon for The Episcopal Church based on our experience. We are Episcopalians, active communicants in ministry in our home parish and Diocese. We, our clergy, and our church family are shocked at the way the leadership of Mrs. Karen Lyon, and Mrs. Lyon herself, has treated me as the non-resident father. Hopefully there will be some consideration by parish and Diocesan leadership to developing sensitivity and process to avoid creating additional adult conflict in the lives of children. Blended families need healing, pastoral care, and love--not judgment. Despite her never having communicated more than a few dismissive emails and conversations with me, my son recited recently "Mrs. Lyon does not like you. She only likes my mom." Mrs. Lyon, the current Head of School, has excluded me, failed to provide notices to me, failed to provide copies of school records to me unless I call, email and ask in person numerous times. I learned recently that other non-resident fathers complain of similar treatment. It is with a sigh of relief that I note that Mrs. Lyon, leaving behind her image at the school immortalized in a sculpted relief more prominent than any dedicated to Jesus or the Saints, will retire this year. My ex and I will be sending our son to a public school next year, where sadly there is better training to minimize conflict in the lives of children in blended families. Mark 10:13-16. read more

Our daughter has attended St. Barnabas Episcopal School in DeLand, Florida, from Kindergarten to 8th Grade and will graduate in less than two weeks. Every single St. B. teacher she has had, and learned from, has been caring, hardworking and has put great effort into seeing that she reaches her full potential. I left this school a few years ago, but I am still affected by the way I was treated as a child. I felt publicly shamed when I was suspended in front of my entire grade for things I did not do, under the cover of "Christian values." The faculty and staff were negligent in protecting me, and I later learned that many other students had similarly negative experiences. I was a student at this school for many years, highly disappointed. Thought a private school you'd pay $1000 a month would be worth it? Students here spit derogatory comments, yet nobody bats an eye. Racism, mockery, and ignorance were common aspects of the schools community and I'm deeply disappointed in that. read more
