Despite multiple emails and opportunities to reconsider, the school declined to provide an interpreter. Instead, we were told to rely on written communication, tablets, and "extra time," which are not effective or equitable substitutes for real-time ASL access. This does not provide meaningful communication for Deaf adults, especially during an important process like evaluating a potential school for our children. We were also told we could "bring our own interpreter," which shifts the burden of accessibility onto families rather than meeting basic inclusion standards. We left the interaction feeling that the school was not prepared to support the communication needs of Deaf parents. Accessibility should not be optional, and it should not depend on families paying out-of-pocket to participate. I hope the school takes this feedback seriously and re-evaluates its approach to serving Deaf and hard-of-hearing families in the future.

He's has so much growth here, its hard to believe he's the same child/young man. Socrates (K-12) believes in an individualized education for every student that teaches to the whole child. It uses a STEAM (think STEM with arts) based curriculum with a Socratic method of teaching. They are accredited and take the McKay scholarship; though students still have to test in academically, be interviewed and sit in and shadow for a day or two before they are admitted. As a parent, you can actively take part in your child's educational path. Students also have a say as they offer classes based on their needs and interests. They also work with homeschoolers with blended learning solutions (part school, part home school) and FL Virtual school, where students can take advantage of all of the classes they have to offer. In the past two graduating classes, which total less than 15 students as its a small school, we've had the Alfonde scholarship recipient (Rollins college), a scholarship to Columbia University, along with scholarships to UCF and a number of academic papers published-and this is just what I know of. If your child isn't living up to their potential where they are currently going to school, I highly suggest giving Socrates a tour.
