Saint Athanasius is the first Catholic church that I've ever attended on a regular basis. (It's within walking distance to my house). Since I began attending a year and a half ago, I have gone through the RCIA (Rite of Christian initiation for adults) program and become a member.
The building is fairly unassuming compared to other Catholic churches that I have visited. It's a mid-century modern building (a converted gymnasium is its rumored origin). The stained glass is all purple with a natural wood interior. It's a peaceful, non-distracting, place to worship.
The two residing parish priests are of the Holy Ghost Fathers congregation, so things are done a bit differently (or so I am told by a friend who is a seminarian). They are both older, well-traveled gentlemen from Ireland, and from my interactions with them, they seem to be well-rooted in God's love.
I am giving this parish four stars. At times, the liturgical music needs improvement. The 10:30 mass features a choir, pianist, and flautist. There is also a wonderful sense of community for families. However, I wish that there were more parishioners in my age bracket (age 24-35). That said, it is a very welcoming and loving community. read more
