While I was hospitalized at Overland Park Regional Medical Center last year Dr. Adam Kaye did the…read moresurgical procedure to insert a central catheter line (perma-port) to be used as an easy intravenous access site during my upcoming chemo treatments. It's a very quick and simple procedure, but not without some risk because the surgeon needs to be careful that the wires that are part of the apparatus don't actually touch the heart muscle as it's being inserted. In this case everything went fine and there were no problems with the insertion. Approximately a year later the perma-port stopped working properly, and I had completed the chemo treatments, so I had Dr. Kaye remove it at the beginning of April. This was another relatively simple procedure, done at the Overland Park Surgery Center under local anesthesia. It did involve a bit more tugging and pulling than I anticipated, but there was nothing painful about it. My only subsequent concern was that a good-sized lump developed afterwards under the incision that was fairly tender to the touch and looked bruised. Follow-ups with Dr. Kaye (a really nice, cheerful guy, by the way) were reassuring -- sometimes after this kind of procedure where there's a remaining pocket under the skin, where the port had been located, fluid can accumulate during the healing process. There was no infection, the small incision itself has healed nicely, and a month or so later the lump is now considerably smaller as the fluid is being reabsorbed and it's no longer tender. I just saw Dr. Kaye again to check, and he recommended hot compresses on the site to accelerate the shrinking of the remaining lump. That's certainly no big deal to do! I appreciate Dr. Kaye's accessibility and his willingness and ability to explain what was going on, both before the procedure and during the healing process. I've been fortunate to have never had any other surgeries, but that means that I didn't know exactly what to expect at each stage and Dr. Kaye's been good about explaining what I needed to know. Considering this experience, I'd be happy to have Dr. Kaye again as my surgeon if I ever need to have something done, and I can recommend him to others who may need surgery.

I had a very distressing follow-up appointment with Dr. Noland after a five-day hospitalization. I…read morecame in needing help with medication refills, leave paperwork, and follow-up imaging for an adrenal nodule found on my hospital CT. I tried to explain that my concern was the fragmentation of my care and the difficulty of coordinating issues involving several providers. During the discussion, I felt repeatedly interrupted and spoken to in a defensive and condescending manner. One disagreement involved my leave paperwork. Dr. Noland stated that another provider had already completed my FMLA paperwork and said the documentation had been written by GI. He then pulled up a document in my chart. I clarified that it was a regular hospital work note, not the Hartford FMLA paperwork I was requesting, and that it had been written by a hospitalist rather than GI. In response, he emphasized that he had been doing his job for a long time and knew the difference. When I attempted to continue clarifying the situation, he told me to stop interrupting him. I then stopped speaking and shook my head while listening because I disagreed with what was being said. He responded, "You can shake your head all you want." I felt placed in a situation where both verbally correcting inaccurate information and silently expressing disagreement were treated as disrespectful. The interaction felt hostile and intimidating rather than collaborative. He also repeatedly focused on my previous request for possible future leave, while I was attempting to explain that my current request concerned an actual five-day hospitalization. When I asked how unpredictable intermittent leave might be estimated for a condition such as migraines, he initially said the comparison was irrelevant, then explained that leave would be based on a documented pattern. When I asked about medication refills, he shook his head and said in a tone I perceived as sarcastic, "Oh, I suppose they told you to follow up with me for that too." They had, and being repeatedly redirected between providers was the exact concern I was attempting to explain. He later repeatedly told me that the situation was not my fault and said he would complete the paperwork and submit the refills. I was also concerned by how the appointment ended. At the beginning of the visit, Dr. Noland discussed the adrenal nodule and indicated that an MRI might be the better imaging option. After the conversation became increasingly tense, he left the room without personally completing that discussion. His nurse later returned and told me that a CT had been ordered instead. When I asked about the earlier MRI discussion, she had to leave and clarify the plan with him. She returned and said that he wanted to begin with a CT and go from there. He did not return to explain the change directly. Although my paperwork was ultimately completed, my refills were submitted, and imaging was ordered, I left feeling unheard and intimidated. I immediately requested to transfer to another primary care provider. This was the most upsetting healthcare encounter I have experienced.

I checked in for the appointment today, paid my co-pay and waited for a technician to call me. Once I got in the MRI department, I reminded the tech that I have a Spinal Cord Stimulator implanted by Dr. Fotopolis in 2024. I had discussed this with the tech and doctor that saw me in the Urgent Care department. I also recorded it on the intake form that day. The tech told me they don't have the correct MRI machine to do any MRI's on patients with stimulator implants and none of their facilities do and I needed to make an appt. at an independent imaging company. The people I spoke with today at KCOI were very apologetic and I understand mistakes are made. What I am upset about is evidently the doctors at KCOI put in 100's of stimulators each year and are supposedly they are the #1 rated Ortho Hospital in the city, yet they don't choose to buy an imaging machine that is stimulator compatible. Frankly, I was stunned

After a hospitalization and an initial consultation with another orthopedic surgeon--who only ordered X-rays on the day surgery was scheduled, then canceled without providing a clear plan--we knew it was time to get a second opinion. That's when we found KC Orthopedic. Their team carefully reviewed all prior records and matched us with Dr. Peer, who proved to be the perfect physician for this complex case. From the start, Dr. Peer showed incredible professionalism and attention to detail. He coordinated with the primary care provider to order the necessary X-rays, EKGs, and labs. He also took the time to understand the full medical history, including a difficult past knee replacement on the other leg that had led to complications. Dr. Peer approached surgery with extraordinary care. He spent nearly four hours performing the knee replacement to ensure precision and safety. The outcome was remarkable--the knee was usable right away, and there has been no post-operative pain. After such a disappointing experience with the first surgeon, working with Dr. Peer was a completely different experience. He listened, cared deeply, and was prepared every step of the way. We are beyond grateful for Dr. Peer's skill and dedication, and we wholeheartedly recommend him and KC Orthopedic to anyone in need of orthopedic care. Truly the best physician we've ever worked with.

I have no complaints about my ability to get an appointment or his staff. However, after the EMG was done and read, Dr Patel kept telling me I have carpel tunnel in both wrists. I finally told him that maybe true, but that was not my primary concern right now. (I have never had any pain in either wrist). After subsequently seeing a neurosurgeon, I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon in another group to be evaluated for a rotator cuff tear. When I tried to get the records from Dr Patel's office to be sent to the other orthopedic surgeon, I discovered that I had to go on line with a third party, HealthMark(?) HealthMart(?). The only way to get them from this place is to fill out an on-line request. After spending over an hour on line trying to fill out the form, I gave up. I could not get past the second page-the third page and other pages simply would not load. I finally called Dr Patel's office back and spoke to a person in scheduling who said she could have the records sent. Thank heavens. I'm sure the doctors at KC Bone and Joint are fine, but after my experience, I will not return there for care.
