While I was hospitalized at Overland Park Regional Medical Center last year Dr. Adam Kaye did the…read moresurgical procedure to insert a central catheter line (perma-port) to be used as an easy intravenous access site during my upcoming chemo treatments. It's a very quick and simple procedure, but not without some risk because the surgeon needs to be careful that the wires that are part of the apparatus don't actually touch the heart muscle as it's being inserted. In this case everything went fine and there were no problems with the insertion. Approximately a year later the perma-port stopped working properly, and I had completed the chemo treatments, so I had Dr. Kaye remove it at the beginning of April. This was another relatively simple procedure, done at the Overland Park Surgery Center under local anesthesia. It did involve a bit more tugging and pulling than I anticipated, but there was nothing painful about it. My only subsequent concern was that a good-sized lump developed afterwards under the incision that was fairly tender to the touch and looked bruised. Follow-ups with Dr. Kaye (a really nice, cheerful guy, by the way) were reassuring -- sometimes after this kind of procedure where there's a remaining pocket under the skin, where the port had been located, fluid can accumulate during the healing process. There was no infection, the small incision itself has healed nicely, and a month or so later the lump is now considerably smaller as the fluid is being reabsorbed and it's no longer tender. I just saw Dr. Kaye again to check, and he recommended hot compresses on the site to accelerate the shrinking of the remaining lump. That's certainly no big deal to do! I appreciate Dr. Kaye's accessibility and his willingness and ability to explain what was going on, both before the procedure and during the healing process. I've been fortunate to have never had any other surgeries, but that means that I didn't know exactly what to expect at each stage and Dr. Kaye's been good about explaining what I needed to know. Considering this experience, I'd be happy to have Dr. Kaye again as my surgeon if I ever need to have something done, and I can recommend him to others who may need surgery.

Appointment times have been on schedule. Receptionists have been more than competent and quite pleasant. The ability to complete most new patient paperwork online and in advance of the appointment made my first checkin a breeze. The attention I received was focused and professional. I've said before, in other yelp reviews, when dealing with a medical issue, a doctor's ability to resolve pain or illness is limited by many factors. In reality, the best thing you can hope for is to have people who seem genuinely to care about you as a patient, and thus far, I believe that's the case for KCBJ.

I checked in for the appointment today, paid my co-pay and waited for a technician to call me. Once I got in the MRI department, I reminded the tech that I have a Spinal Cord Stimulator implanted by Dr. Fotopolis in 2024. I had discussed this with the tech and doctor that saw me in the Urgent Care department. I also recorded it on the intake form that day. The tech told me they don't have the correct MRI machine to do any MRI's on patients with stimulator implants and none of their facilities do and I needed to make an appt. at an independent imaging company. The people I spoke with today at KCOI were very apologetic and I understand mistakes are made. What I am upset about is evidently the doctors at KCOI put in 100's of stimulators each year and are supposedly they are the #1 rated Ortho Hospital in the city, yet they don't choose to buy an imaging machine that is stimulator compatible. We were there much longer than expected, however this was unavoidable as to other patients getting the care they needed and deserve. Dr. Bleazard at KCBJ did an open reduction and fixation of a shattered malleolus, chipped tibia,…read moreand ligament tear in March of 2021. I was a terrible patient and walked in my cast starting a week after surgery. I never wore my boot and in fact departed for a trip to Costa Rica the day after I got my cast off, where I hiked thousands of steps without any ankle support. I also never did physical therapy and even no-showed for my last recheck appointment (sorry guys). Fast forward to today, when my leg got stuck in a stirrup after a freak accident on a pony (I'm a horse trainer). I was dragged 150 or so feet at a gallop by my formerly-broken ankle before I finally broke free of the stirrup. Unbelievably, my ankle is not injured or even sore in the slightest. My surgical repair has withstood the most rigorous test imaginable, and I walked away unscathed and ready to put myself in danger again tomorrow. Thank you, Dr. Bleazard, for doing such an incredible job on my surgery. Something tells me I'll see you again.

I had an EMG done with Dr Patel because I was having pain in my neck, shoulder, and arm. Since I…read morehave had previous surgery for a cervical spine issue and have had a severely impacted nerve in my upper back for a few years, the EMG was part of my assessment for diagnosing that problem. I have no complaints about my ability to get an appointment or his staff. However, after the EMG was done and read, Dr Patel kept telling me I have carpel tunnel in both wrists. I finally told him that maybe true, but that was not my primary concern right now. (I have never had any pain in either wrist). After subsequently seeing a neurosurgeon, I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon in another group to be evaluated for a rotator cuff tear. When I tried to get the records from Dr Patel's office to be sent to the other orthopedic surgeon, I discovered that I had to go on line with a third party, HealthMark(?) HealthMart(?). The only way to get them from this place is to fill out an on-line request. After spending over an hour on line trying to fill out the form, I gave up. I could not get past the second page-the third page and other pages simply would not load. I finally called Dr Patel's office back and spoke to a person in scheduling who said she could have the records sent. Thank heavens. I'm sure the doctors at KC Bone and Joint are fine, but after my experience, I will not return there for care.

The doctors are the best in the area, and if you have a sports injury, this would be the place to go. They serve quite a few area athletes. The problem, though, is that it then becomes hard to get an appointment. I booked an appointment two weeks out, and even then, I didn't see the doctor I made the appointment with. I saw one of his associates. But it didn't really matter because everybody seemed qualified and on top of their games. It's convenient that they are partnered with the Olathe Medical System, so major scans, like MRI's, are done across the street at the hospital, as are surgeries.

I have tried and tried to get a CT scan scheduled that was ordered by my doctor. It was sent incorrectly and not only did they not return my phone calls, 6 of them over a 4-week period, they did not return the 3 calls from the imaging location. The order was written for a scan of my lefy. I even went into the office and tried to get help in person. My husband tried both her online appointment request and calling for an appointment, and had the same experience. He's waited a month now for someone to call him back.
