I was surprised that Yelp said I already reviewed this Srodek's location, since I have never been until yesterday, but in the past I tried out their pierogies, hence the review. Yesterday I was in Hamtramck for work and FINALLY got to stop by this location, their first store - their second is in Sterling Heights, which I have been to a few times. I was only in the store for about five minutes, mostly to shop for pierogies. It *looked* like the pierogies (frozen ones, in the frozen case) were only $5 and change per package, which was a good deal, so I bought three packages; however, upon checkout, one was $5 and change and the other two were $8, which I felt wasn't clearly stated. I ended up getting sweet potato, garlic and chives, and farmer's cheese - the more "traditional" varieties like potato, farmers cheese, etc. are available upon checkout. You can pay with cash or credit card but there's a 4% fee to use a credit card here, so I paid with cash. Overall it's a nice store, and I can vouch that their pierogies are great, but I do prefer the Sterling Heights location, which is like 4x the size, over on Mound Rd.

My sister, on her first visit to Michigan from Texas, had done her research and Srodek's on her itinerary. Thanks, sis! I had no idea what a treasure was just down the road from me. She loves history, food exploration and pieroges so Srodek's was her perfect tasty trifecta. We visited on a Sunday afternoon. #1 - loved that they were open and not crowded. #2 - loved the reasonable prices. #3 - loved that the counter folks were patient and knowledgeable and answered all our questions. The selection of pieroges was awesome! We came home with: 2 breakfast blend (egg and sausage), 2 potato farmers cheese, pizza (pepperoni, mozzarella, mushrooms, tomato basil sauce), spinach and artichoke, potato cheddar cheese and bacon, strawberry and apple. Each package contains a dozen, so yes.....that's 108 pieroges if anyone is counting, but who's counting?! Some were only available from the freezer case, but no worries for us since most will be frozen for a flight back to Texas anyway. They are so so easy to heat up in butter stovetop. Had the breakfast ones for breakfast Monday morning. Yummy!! Srodek's is chock-full of polish grocery items, wines, and bakery items. And the meat and cheese case are equally as impressive as the pieroge selection. There are sausages and smoked meats in a variety of blends and grinds. We came home with pork and veal sausage, sauerkraut, sour soup mix, rye breads and a beautiful confection called "Angel Wings" covered in powdered sugar. They were in fact heavenly! Hope the rest of my sister's visit goes as well as this first stop! Can't wait to see what else she has in store for me!

April 2022 experience & review: I moved to Atlanta from Detroit years ago, and often crave tastes from the mother land. In this case, it was Polish food from Hamtramck. Fortunately, Srodeks ships! I ordered two huge rings of fine kielbasa with veal and pork (vs chunky), and two 12 count packs of mushroom pierogi. The total was just over $40, a very fair price. Shipping was expensive ($30ish UPS 2 day air), but that's to be expected. I'm guessing it's a pass-through cost. They ship on Mondays and Tuesdays, so pay attention to that if your order is time sensitive. The products are shipped frozen, in excellent packaging with reusable freezer packs. I was very pleased with the temperature of the food items upon arrival. Note - when you order food like this, make sure to track the delivery so you can immediately freeze or refrigerate it. Their kielbasa is the best I've ever had, and their pierogi are a good size, hand made and authentic. They make over 20+ varieties. I like the mushroom, that is a unique filling and it's not very common. Both of these items freeze well, so don't worry about ordering too much food, like I did! Enjoy!

There is a very good reason that this long standing Polish deli and market is busy. They have the most amazing pierogis of all different kinds and an outstanding selection of sausages and meat. Their pierogis are hands down the best in the Detroit metro area. The kraut and kraut mushroom are absolute must purchase. Additionally the corned beef/Swiss and pulled pork are personal favorites. Not traditional picks, but are well worth trying. We prefer to get our smoked and fresh kielbasa here as we just don't find the same quality elsewhere. We always run into people around the holidays, who come in from quite far away, to bring a little bit of their childhood memories of food back home with them for their Holiday meals.

Note from 2012 Yelp deleted hundreds of my reviews. Best Polish food around!!! Est. 1981 Family Owned. 5 Different types of Smoked Kielbasa. Fresh Kielbasa. Over 29 varieties of Pierogi. Home Made Horseradish (it will make a grown man cry). Large selection of Polish Beer. Import Cheeses. Polish and European imported items. Come on in and see for yourself. I'm so hooked on that Horseradish along with the Pierogi's and Chunky Sausage's. The love place in all these products made on site are simply the best in the whole state I tell you. The very unique collections of soups, sauces and bakery items will keep you coming back for more. Andrew Zimmerman did a special on the Travel Channel so I just had to try the Jellied Pigs Feet OMG so dam good. I'm 15 miles away which is well worth a trip once per month to loaded up on the best of the best for sure.

Srodek's is a family-owned and -operated Polish market in the immigrant community of Hamtramck. My brother and I stayed in Hamtramck this past weekend and stopped in at Srodek's for some souvenirs from our trip. Since we were flying, we grabbed some Polish hunter's sausage as a treat (the cities where we live don't have large Polish populations or Polish markets)! Delicious (I got spicy and regular)! The rest of the market was great, too. If lived in Detroit, I'd be a regular. If I had driven to Detroit, I would have filled my car with things to cook with and try when I got home. Alas, all I could take on this trip were the sausages. But the store is great. The customer service is wonderful. And the store is well worth a visit whether you love Eastern European food already or want to learn more about it! (FYI: TSA didn't open my bag despite having a couple hunter's sausages from Srodek's in my carry-on bag, but my bag does smell like sausage now.)

Perogi: make it, buy it, love it...whatever it takes. Making it with my grandmother or my auntie is obviously supreme however it's a long process and takes a lot of time, attention to detail, and patience....and beat on a snowy ski day when you have time to make potato water. When you're in a hurry and you don't have the time and wherewithal to make your own this is the place to go. The venison is a version I've never tried and it did not disappoint. Loved the soup selection and also the really cool Polish grocery staples. The sausage was outstanding. Very friendly staff! Need to try the deserts next time. Hamtramck was very cool!

Next stop on our Bizarre Foods tour of Detroit was for head cheese. I never had the opportunity to try it or even see it until this episode, so you can imagine my excitement. I was surprised to see how long the line was in this little grocery store on a week day in the middle of the day. It was the week before Easter which probably contributed. Therefore, if you're going before a holiday, plan for a 30-45 minute wait. We tried so many things here and some others we wanted, but you have to purchase in larger quantities than we wanted. We wanted to try the pigs feet in jelly, but you have to purchase by the pound and frankly, I really didn't want to commit to that much, just a slice. Maybe next time. Moving onto something we did try, we started with the Tongue in Jelly. It had the great nice soft and tender texture of tongue, but the jelly in this case, really didn't add to anything other than the slimy jelly texture. Even though it wasn't my favorite, I still appreciate the uniqueness and preservation of still serving this cut from years past. There were two types of Head Cheese we sampled, regular and hot. Truth be told, I was expecting some rare flavors, gelatinous textures, and probably an overall disappointing experience on this. WRONG! See, never judge a book by its cover. It was far from my misconception. You could not tell that it was from the head, snout, and any other part of the pig that you typically don't think you eat. As a whole, it really wasn't far off from salami. YEAH, SALAMI! What a shocker, I know. Even with the jelly filling around the meat, you really don't get that jelly texture like the tongue. Between the regular and the hot, I would rather eat the hot version. Not that it was spicy, not at all actually, but the little extra spiciness, delivers a little more flavor than the regular. The regular is a similar to a very mild form of salami and its the hot version that really brings the flavors to light. The smoked liver sausage was worth getting. It had the nice liver flavor, yet the slice wasn't mushy in any way like chopped liver. It is closer to a soft bologna in texture, but not in flavor. Only one organ has such a unique flavor and it doesn't matter how you prepare it, you can tell when its liver. Not any different with this sausage. It has a nice smoky hint to it as well. This one is great to try and I would love it on a sandwich. Their hunters sausage, watch out, it's big. I was expecting a 6" or 7" piece. Not here. It's about two feet long, each piece and one order comes with two pieces. Be prepared. It had a nice snap casing and was a typical hunters meaty sausage inside, but nothing unique other than the size.

The best horseradish

Whenever in Hamtramck I enjoy stopping at Shrodeks Market they always have a great selection of all of your polish favorites. Homemade pierogies homemade kishka and some of the best horseradish you will ever taste and oh by the way the horseradish is homemade. They also have almost anything you're looking for in the way of Polish food quite a few different sausages as well as spicy Hunter sausage and regular I prefer the spicy because it's got just the right amount of the zip in it. As an added bonus they also make a ghost pepper sausage it's very hot but just hot enough. When in Hamtramck make sure you stop at Shrodeks for the freshest pierogies in town.

Love this place! They have wonderful, authentic, Polish, pierogies and so many different kinds to choose from! Eating pierogies from Srodek's, is like eating babcia's (grandmother's) pierogies when I was a kid . The fresh, raw kielbasa is also great! Boil it for about 40 minutes with an onion cut up in the water, and it turns out so wonderful! I just love eating the Hunter's Sausage. I often find myself eating a bit of it here and there as a snack throughout the day. Mmmm, Yum! Also, just a side note: You know it's gonna be real authentic polish food when everyone in the store is speaking fluent polish.

I should've looked at the inside pictures more. My bad. :( The woman that runs a shop is sweet and friendly and helpful. She does events for the local kids and veterans. She also has classes for date nights and other events, for anyone that wants to learn how to make pierogi. The pierogi are all frozen, order and pay at the front counter. All orders are bagged. A small sheet of paper to give instructions on how to cook the pierogies in a pan with some butter. Suggested to eat with some sautéed onions and or sour cream for some. I got the chicken pot pie, the mushroom and mozzarella, cheddar, the potato and garlic, sauerkraut and mushroom, sauerkraut and onion. $87.04 The chicken pot pie comes with gravy and some crumbs to put on top. They have 25 different flavors, however, they were out of many and sold out , especof all the extra fellas. We cooked up the pierogi, sautéed some onions, kielbasa, kraut. We ate the potato and mushroom and mozzarella pierogi with the onions, cream cheese or sour cream. Pierogi took about 6-8 minutes on medium heat on the stovetop to brown some. The mushroom wasn't my favorite, as the mushrooms would gush out some water from it, was a rather unexpected experience, not for me. The mushroom and cheese were decent. The kraut and onion and the chicken pot pie fell apart somewhat during the cooking and flipping for us. The potatoes were as expected, not too bad.
