A different take on Indian food - trying to take it up a notch, and generally succeeding. Lovely food.

I have heard a few people describe this place as the best Indian restaurant in Brighton. Whilst I…read moredon't think I've eaten in enough to warrant corroborating that statement, I can say I ate here recently and it was pretty damn good! What I particularly like about Shahi Tandoori is that it is split into two quite separate spaces, one side is the restaurant and one is the takeaway. This is genius! There's nothing more annoying than people wandering through while you're eating to pick up their order, letting a draft in and spoiling the ambiance of the restaurant. Well Shahi has it covered. Food-wise, the side dishes are all great...I particularly like the Bombay Aloo, the Sag Paneer and the Onion Bhajis- delicious! I can also recommend the Vegetable Balti and Chicken Tikka Masala. Since this place is just around the corner, we often pop down to pick up a few side dishes to go with a home-cooked curry and they never look at us funny, despite our paltry order! I like them.

You can never have enough good quality Indian restaurants (so says I), without doubt Shahi Tandoori…read moredeserves to be added to that category. It's located in an odd place at the bottom of Ditchling Rise, because of the location you might never have come this way, I really would recommend it though. 'Shahi' is a little bit cheaper then the more central Indian restaurants (and take aways, they do both). The food is also of a very good quality; I had the rogan josh and passanda, both of which I could eat 7 days a week. The area isn't the nicest, the decor is a little dated, but it's a fantastic place filled with Indian charm (and food).

We eat there quite a lot and they always take time to have a chat even if the place is rammed. The food is so nice! I prefer to eat in rather than get a take away and last time I was in there I had the Lamb Kharai which was medium hot and really moreish. The sauces were delightful and the rice was lovely and fluffy. This would be 5 stars if it wasn't for the slightly odd service. Yes, the food was served very quickly, but the entire attitude of the staff was seriously lacking in warmth. We distinctly got the feeling that they wanted us in and out of there as soon as possible. There was also a bit of lack of understanding about a dietary concern of mine. I can't have onions as they make me quite unwell. I'm under strict instructions by my doctor not to eat them, so I asked the server if I could have a dish without onions. He informed me that every single dish had onions. That's fine, but could I please have one without them? Seeing as the food is cooked fresh, I didn't really see what the issue was, so I just ended up giving in and ordered a dish and painstakingly picked the onions out. Aside from that, this place is definitely worth a visit.

My friend and I arrived at 4.58, and stayed until just after 6, and they were happy for us to do so, which meant we practically had a dinner at the place. And the food on offer was tremendous quality too, with a couple of different meaty curries, in addition to the vegetarian options and Sag Aloo, with a well stocked salad bar, naan and a few extra additions to bolster the buffet nicely. I'd recommend going earlier in the day though, as although the food was delicious, it was clear that we were the last people to dig into it, before they prepared for the evening surge. The lamb curry in particular was a joy for the taste buds, and comes with my greatest suggestion. My dinner partner still maintains that takeout curry tastes better, but there's nothing like being submerged in a well presented restaurant, and being presented with such a strong variety of food at such a good price. The Indian equivalent of Me Old China.

I don't know whether it's changed hands or something because each and every time I've ordered from there recently there has constantly been an issue. This time around I ordered a lamb tikka starter which is normally moist and delicious but the pieces of lamb were actually black. So overcooked and burnt I couldn't chew it. Lucky to still have teeth... They also forgot my poppadoms and mango chutney. My chicken kori had obviously been really sloppily made as it came with the hugest chunks of onion and pepper - they were just quartered and thrown in. Brighton is now officially RUBBISH for take-aways. Gutted.

Disappointment turned to joy, and I was told we had to go to Surma Tandoori, which is my flat mates favourite curry house. Having had three years of expirience with the place, he should know, and assured me that the food was the best on Lewes road dispite several people raving about Bhindis just a little way up the road from there. We trusted his judgement, perused the reasonably priced menu (plenty of curries with rice for £5.20 - £7.00 as well as all the norms) and took our wares home with us, shivering against the wind. I've got to say, I was very impressed... It's restaurant quality stuff at prices that aren't breaking the bank. Nan's were fresh and fluffy, packing the right amount of flavour, and I was informed that the Bajji were damned good (the fact he wouldn't give away even one suggests he meant it). I thought about giving a 4* rather than 5, but seeing as no one else has, and the place seems to be run by such a grand family I thought I'd push the boat out! Now excuse me, as I think I may not be able to resist my leftovers after all...

Per head you're probably looking at spending upwards of £15, which is fairly standard, but having entered with high expectations my evening was a little soured. I think you need to understand that despite it's grand façade, Ashoka is in the mid-range market for Indian restaurants. For example, the food is by no means poor but due to the décor it feels more like a colonial Indian as opposed to a traditional Indian restaurant. I can't help but think that Ashoka are selling themselves short by opting for this more restrained interior/ atmosphere. Despite its aesthetic shortcomings I had no complaints about the meal. As a takeaway, Ashoka is perfectly good, as they offer free deliveries for every order over £15 and a 10% discount on orders over £12. As such, I'd be more happy to recommend Ashoka as a takeaway than as a restaurant but if you like your local Indian to have a more British feel, then you'll probably enjoy it.

As mentioned by Mike, from the outside, Ashoko looks quite well polished and sophisticated, but the inside fails to be that, while also failing to invoke the memories of a traditional Indian restaurant that has too often been replaced with these quasi-European 'lounges'. The food was ok, it just left me feeling like I could have been better served elsewhere.
