This area looks so much better now that the old Alaskan Way Viaduct was removed back in 2019. The…read morepark was designed with pedestrians in mind. It keeps people away from the tunnel traffic along that road. It's still a work in progress with many developments planned in the future. There's still a lot of construction near Belltown as of June 2025. We stayed in a hotel near the park. It's super close to Pier 66. The park currently connects Pioneer Square with Pier 62, and has great views of Elliott Bay. We took the elevator up to the Overlook Walk so that we could gain access to Pike Place Market. There are also stairs that take you there from each side of the walkway. I don't remember it being this easy back in 2011. Heck, I don't even remember seeing the ferris wheel at Pier 57. When did that happen? It's a large and beautiful greenspace that's perfect for locals & tourists alike. We kind of lost our bearings for a bit, but then it became all clear that we were headed the right way to the market. I really like what they have done here. It will be cool to see it again once it's all done, and there's no more construction. It was a nice walk along the bay.

Bellevue Botanical Garden is a beautiful place. And the fact that it is always free too! It's open…read moreevery day even holidays! To be a small botanical garden, there's a nice walking path and many, many beautiful flowers and plants to see. There are often local community events hosted here. Activities for the young to adults. They have classes that you can find and sign up for on their website as well. And the classes are affordable!! You may even see people taking wedding photos here because again it's beautiful. The park is ADA friendly. The path is dirt and pebbled but can be navigated with a wheelchair. There are bathrooms on site and a small shop. I have never purchased bulbs or plants from here but I know there is a big community around that. The coffee shop in the garden can get busy. But a benefit is we were able to charge my husband's wheelchair there on a visit. While the park is open every day, the coffee shop is not. Definitely this should be a spot for all locals. And not just a one time visit either.

Once the entire family met up, we climbed back into the car and headed to Bellevue. Not sur if it was due to the time. But we were surprised there was a lot of parking available. We spent a good 2-hrs here which included getting lost and finding other street entries into the botanical park from a school and from other busy street corner at the bottom of the park. Nice and shaded, quiet little creeks, plenty of seating for those that were inspired to journal, plenty of elderly people using this time to exercise and stretch. We enjoyed the different areas like the swinging bridge, the Japanese garden and even the little cafe they have there. Fairly priced items and plenty of tables to enjoy a refreshment and snack. By the time we were done, the gift shop was already closed. So I took the opportunity to drop a donation into the box instead.

Likewise, I look up trip reports and research my hikes on their website. I support WTA and encourage anyone who hikes and climbs to donate and contribute to the trail reports on their site. I'm writing to express how blessed I am to have the opportunity to volunteer and proudly be a…read moremember of this great organization. There are few groups that after you volunteer with, you instantly see the results of your labor. I'd like to take a moment to write about my experience as a volunteer. Since the first "work party" with WTA, I have fallen in love again with nature. I am smitten with the trees, wildlife, and the sound of the forest. Every volunteer event is another chance to reconnect with mother earth. You would be amiss if you never visited a state or county park, never mind renovating or building a trail for others to also experience. So what's the experience so special? I would go out on a limb, and say that from the moment that you step foot into your first event; people who genuinely care about giving back instantly surround you. Conversations are struck, and you are in a family, you are accepted, no matter whom you are. Sign in; helmet on, safety lesson, and the team is on their way. The number one rule is to be safe. Second rule is to have fun. Third rule is to get work done. I remember being nervous about hiking a trail carrying a shovel and pick, not really sure where and what I was doing. That quickly passes, as Assistant Crew Leaders help guide you forward; you probably know more about what you are doing, than you think. Common sense rules, before you know, you have improved on a section of trail. You have literally moved earth. I have met some of the most awesome people out on the trail, working with them, and forming friendships and respect for hard work. Along the way, hikers pass through, sometimes thanking you, but always appreciative of the work done. It's 8 hours of commitment, and they expect you to be there. You take breaks when you need to, and you work at your own speed. You can make it a casual weekend, or make it into an intense workout. I encourage anyone to volunteer with WTA. It's fulfilling and without question, one of the best experiences when it comes to giving back.

I just completed the Mt Rainier Half Marathon, which involved a gondola ride up to the start line…read moreand running down the mountain. Each gondola fits up to 8 people and gives a fairly decent amount of time to enjoy the scenery going up. Look carefully and you may spot some wildlife! At the top, it was absolutely breathtaking. While it was super windy and at times felt like I was going to be blown off the mountain, you arrive to a spectacular view of Mt Rainier that is absolutely worth stopping for a photo op. Also at the top are the Summit House restaurant with a beer patio and some restroom facilities. While it was expensive for the summer ticket ($50 per adult) they were offing a BOGO 50% off the second ticket so that made it easier to swallow.

They also seemed to have the iconic face sculptures that most sculpture gardens I've visited tend to have (re: Chicago and DC). My best friend and I walked to this from our hotel. It seems that they have mini golf this summer which was really cute. There were different art installations that you could hit a golf ball to. We just observed. It looks like a fantastic park to read a book or have a picnic. The Chinese zodiac heads were my favorite. I'd recommend checking this spot out.

The renovations to this park has been great! It's great having different paths for cyclists and…read morepedestrians. The beaches are more accessible. The natural flora are beautiful. There are also a lot more seats and picnic tables. My only gripe is the lack of bathrooms. There's one up at the top of the park but the next one is further in the park where Cafe Hagen has opened up. I'm glad that cafe opened up because there needed to be a food option. But the bathrooms are disgusting. They've only been open for a month and it's the only bathroom in the park. They need to do A LOT more cleanings. The staff at the cafe was mostly friendly except the Asian girl that worked on Saturday. She seemed more interested in chatting with her friends than serving customers. It's a shame considering the other staff members were friendly. I hope these are resolved soon. Otherwise the park is beautiful. Just plan your bathroom breaks.
