This is a very special store. If you can get past the idea that it's not a typical store (for example, you need to book a time to visit, it's only open on Saturdays and Sunday's, and you pay $10 up front that goes toward an over $20 purchase), you are in for a very special treat. Suzanne, the owner, offers a curated collection of items that you will almost certainly not see elsewhere. It feels like you are going back in time. There is a lot to see and it's mesmerizing. If you strike up a conversation with Suzanne, you will see that she is committed she is to offering an unforgettable experience without the distraction of other people and cell phones. I love the name of this Antique Shop! I used to bring my kids here when they were little and we'd pack a picnic, put a penny on the railroad tracks, wait for the train to pass and have ourselves a squashed penny! Sometimes we'd use a quarter too! They got a kick out of that. They we easily amused. The front of this place is full of interesting things to see!! The porch is filled with unusual curiosities. Surrounded by railroads, cabooses, stockyards, and the historic bank building on the corner, just passing by is a feast for the eyes. Cool stuff everywhere! However, once you step onto the rickety porch and enter the store itself, it's downright creepy. Miss Havisham would feel right at home in this aged building that seems to be frozen in time. There's junk everywhere! It's dusty, dank, dark and cold. It's difficult to see anything because it so cluttered. The shelves are piled with old toys, signs, games, knick-knacks and glassware and are coated with an ashy film. Spooky, eerie dolls hide in the dim, cob webbed corners of the store. The labyrinth of twists and turns will have you going in circles. Walking thru the aisles of mazes reminded me of going thru the fun house at the carnival with weird clowns and mannequins hither and thither. Much of the vintage stuff you'll find here is musty and tattered, but you're a true treasure picker, you may discover a hidden gem. Personally, I didn't have the patience to sift thru all the gritty wares which gave me a headache and left me itchy; but, if you are looking for something rare and peculiar, and you don't mind digging thru dust, you just may find the oddity you seek in this quirky shop. read more

Drove hours down from DC only to find that despite visiting numerous times over the years, a new paid reservation policy was in place. There was absolutely zero notice online that there was any change in policy and when I called to ask about the situation I was forwarded to a voicemail box which never called me back. I was willing to pay the $10 to shop however found the entire thing absurd. I had specifically budgeted $2,000 for birthday shopping trip to one of my favorite shops only to be turned away at the door and have my call unreturned. DISAPPOINTING!!! read more

Highly recommend this business. We had such a great experience, the owner is very helpful and so nice. There is a lot to see and it is a very unique opportunity. We will be back and am looking forward to all the hidden treasures. It is pretty simple, call and make an appointment, it is a $10 fee to get in which you get back if you purchase some $10 or more. This place used to be welcoming and funky. You would think that right now (Feb 2022) that they would be clamoring for business. People clearly in the place, but the parking lot is roped off, and you have to call for an appointment? They obviously don't want any business. read more

One of the most magical places I've been, run and owned by an even more magical person. To the people who are leaving negative reviews, they don't understand the true magic of places like this, and the pure amazement that they are even still around. The fact that she has spent her entire life preserving parts of history is incredible, as she has found meaning in these items that some people would have tossed. It doesn't smell bad like one person said, I think maybe they thought they were going into a department store and not a place full of things that are 100's years old. Anyway, if you are a person who actually appreciates history and antiques, you will love this place even if you don't end up buying anything. It is an experience. read more

My husband and I drove over an hour to get here. We have been several times in the past but imagine our surprise when were advised that an appointment was needed. Then she said that we could come in for $10.00 each and we could have the whole shop to ourselves for an hour. I can see maybe an appointment, but there is nothing on the website that states one is needed. Who ever heard of charging admission to an antique shop. We turned around and left. Best Antique store ever. Much more macabre than your average antique store. Bring a flashlight. Treasures are piled high and deep.

My husband and I have been visiting here for years and the couple who are there are so, so nice. They go out of their way to accommodate finding objects you are looking for. They are so nice and friendly! The house has room after room of hard to find and unusual antiques and collectables. The lighting is poor and makes it hard to see but my husband and I carry a small flashlight to better light up the inside of cases and the owners even offered us a flashlight as well, we are older you see... this place takes me back in time to the old stores, in the winter months heating the place by a large stove! I loved it! As far as their prices go, they are fair, your always going to have the people who want something for nothing and that just does not happen in an Antique shop, your paying for old, well made, solid Oak or other real wood furniture that's nice quality furniture not flea market junk! We highly recommend this out of the way Antique Store, its packed full of the past around every corner. read more

Don't fall for the one star reviews on here. These are clearly folks who want a perfectly curated store of booths. This is not that. Treasures are at every turn, and in my opinion VERY reasonably priced. The owner is a magical person, and her rules create a very special experience where you are transported back in time. LOTS of items are well over 100 years old. I'm a huge fan of antiquing, and I can confidently say this is my favorite store I've ever been to. As of 5/16/21, it is open on Saturday and Sunday by appointment only, and I was told it will stay that way. Susanne was able to get us in the day after we called, so no long wait here. read more

This place is ridiculous. It's dark and impossible to see anything, and when you do you wish you hadn't. Weird, really weird, stuff from ceiling to floor that isn't worth 1/8th of what it's priced. The lady there follows you around, bug-eyed, and makes sure you don't steal the absolute crap they are trying to sell. And the STENCH. Like human urine in every room, coming to an olfactory crescendo in the room to back where that weird, Masonic apron is hanging. The negative, oppressive environment, like they use that building for coven meetings. .. do not waste your time. read more

What a wonderful find! On our way down to North Carolina, we decided to stop at a few antique shops along the way. We debated stopping here because it's a little ways off the main road. Boy, I'm glad we did. The items on the front porch alone piqued our curiosity and we weren't disappointed when we got inside. There is so much to look at. We easily spend about an hour there and that wasn't nearly enough. There's items tucked away in every corner of the store. I was fascinated with the medical room to the left of the entrance. If you're interested in old medical items, apothecary, or general store supplies, this is the place for you. It reminds me of Obscura in some ways. There's also an additional building behind the main store and an interesting little sculpture garden. We didn't purchase anything this time but we are definitely going back when we have more time to browse the entire store! read more

Super amazing place, the absolute most fantastic antique store ever. I've been going there regularly for almost a decade, and it never fails to lift my spirits. These days, it's super easy to call to make a private appointment (this is a recent change because of Covid), and it was fun and easy to be able to check out the store with a devoted guide! There's a small "admission" fee to make sure it was worth the owner's time to open up everything for just(!) you, but if you buy pretty much anything you get the money back. Even if you don't buy anything, it's worth the price! Squashapenny feels like a mystical museum of tinkerers and artists past--I've been to tons of museums with nowhere near as neat stuff in them as this place. The only difference? If you fall in love with something (and you will), you can take it home with you! read more

This place is seriously cool. Seriously. The selection of unique general store and apothecary items is unsurpassed. You could easily visit 100 times and still not see it all. The only ding that I would offer is that while the shopkeeper is very friendly and knowledgeable, there are a lot of rules. No kids, not touching. I was a little intimidated at first. read more

I visited Squashapenny Junction a couple of weeks ago and was very impressed. I collect a narrow & hard to find genre of antique advertising and found not one, but two, things for my collection. The prices were more than reasonable too. The owner was quite friendly (she nor anyone else "followed" me around in the least) and I enjoyed talking to her. Except for one other place, in a seriously hard to reach part of the state, this is undeniably the best antique store I have come across in Virginia. I'm amazed that I never knew about it until now. I go antiquing a lot in Pennsylvania, where it doesn't get much better, and this place more than holds its own to shops/malls up there. In fact, when it comes to prices, it exceeds Adamstown & other places in PA since it's definitely less expensive across the board. As for the "rules" about no cell phones or bags (hardly unusual), these are perfectly understandable. What's not understandable is the several negative, and frankly whiny & juvenile, other reviews below. My advice, at least to knowledgeable antique enthusiasts, is to put no stock in them whatsoever. This place is not to be missed if you're in the Richmond, VA area. read more

The very best in antique stores....the VERY BEST. Better than any museum and a great way to spend the afternoon.

It's a 5 star museum. Seriously. 5 stars. No charge for admission. (Surprisingly) It's a one star find and shop store. Take one look because it'll all you'll get here for free. Chances are that beyond that they'll start charging. Don't bring your purse in, it's not allowed, they also know you can't afford to buy anything in there anyway, so don't bother. Don't bring your cell phone in because they know if you take pictures of their outrageously priced old crap, you'll scare away any poor chumps that might venture to come all the way out to this obscure little town and throw money at these folks. They were clearly above much conversation during my brief but curious visit, they aren't above following you around the shop though to make sure you haven't stuffed anything into your ... Oh wait, bags aren't allowed. 100 year old tricycle - 395$ Old layered pop up card of human head - 30$ UK pennies from the 60's- 1.00$ Old barbers wooden bowl - 12$ Old useless 1 in tall apothecary bottle - 29$ California raisins sign 1 1/2 ft -120$ Book on human skin issues (from the 70s) - 30$ You get my point. All of the descriptions of the one star reviews are the reason why I love this place. This is a curiosity shop, not an antique store, which means its curated towards the unusual and bizarre. Even then, Squashapenny is a place unto itself, calling it a "store" is a disservice. The owner is one of the most interesting characters in a story you have never read, and if you take a moment to chat with her you will walk away with a deeper appreciation of what Squashapenny really is! read more

Holy cow!! How is it that I didn't know about this shop after all these years living in Richmond?! I don't even know where to begin. First, I'm shaking my head at any review that is less than 4 stars. I don't get it. This is an old house with every room packed floor to ceiling with one of a kind antiques and oddities. Folks, you ain't gonna find this stuff anywhere else. So leave your cameras and bags behind, and be willing to pay for what a couple of lovely people have searched for and hand picked (with an amazing eye) over the span of 30 years. It's a privilege! I happened to show up on a Monday, thank goodness, since they are only open on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. It was a chilly day, and when i walked in, I was greeted by a roaring fire in the wood stove and a kind, exuberant woman (the owner). All I could do was stand with my mouth open and do a slow 360. This is not your standard antique store. If you're into not only the old and beautiful, but the magical, eery, slightly off-kilter and very soulful old and beautiful, this place is for you. It's got: Old general store and apothecary items, medical supplies, charts, and models / late 19th c. holiday decor / spooky-looking (and not-so-spooky-looking) dolls, toys, and mannequins, including bowls of glass doll eyes / religious artwork and statues / Victorian and early 20th c. craft items / signs, and MUCH more. So cool. I could go every day for a month and still not see it all. Just don't set down your keys, as I did, and try to find them among all the treasures! Lots of stuff, but it's true: all the rules are seriously weird. If you try to look aroud outside, they make up new ones on the fly.

I took one look at the "Rules" sign and thought I was back in high school. No cell phones, no purses, no.... It was way too dark to see anything easily, maybe because the prices are too high for the quality of the items. This place has no ventilation and hasn't been cleaned in about a century. read more

This place is such an interesting place. Was not expecting all the unique and bizarre antiques they had stashed in every nook and cranny. They even have a kinda "medical oddities" room. The only reason I cant give this place a 5star rating is because it is incredibly over priced...incredibly..BUT still a wonderful place to visit. read more
