Jordan used to get her hair done here, and you can see why. One of things I like about Brighton is…read morethat it has many different sides to it, and Stage One encapsulates the trashy, fake hair and nails West Street side of Brighton - but in nice way. The owner/senior stylist is a guy called Neil, and he is a bit of an oddity, because he really isn't what you think of when you think of 'Brighton hairdresser'. He is a bit of a geezer, and - sorry Neil if you are reading this - his outfits are - ah - not exactly the kind of carefully-put-together angular hair cut/tight-black-top/scarf ensembles that are more familiar male hair stylist ground. He is more likely to be found wearing double denim. Unironically. He lords it over a bevvy of the ditziest, dippiest juniors I have ever seen. I've never seen one of them let loose on the scissors, in spite of the fact that I went in there on and off for a couple of years. The range of services available also reflect the clientèle that they serve, being one of the places in the area that do hair extensions. I had my hair permed there a few years ago, and they did a good job, although Neil would always try and style my hair with a very 80s wet-look wave after cutting it. The true value of the cut would only be revealed after I went home and washed my hair of the vintage Baywatch look. Altogether the salon has an unpretentious atmosphere, and they offer a wider range of services than a lot of salons in the area. Prices are moderate.

It is a pricey salon, there's no getting away from that, but they do colour sales and 'VIP' (loyalty) discounts, so there are ways to make it cheaper. I've never had a bad experience with them and my hairdresser Bryce is absolutely wonderful. Could not recommend him enough as he's always done an incredible job on my hair. I've attached a photo of my new purple do so you can see his amazing colour work. Before that he'd helped he get from a darker brown through to a natural looking blonde that suited my roots. Always happy and feeling great afterwards. And the chairs that you sit in while washing your hair have massages in them!

I was damn impressed by this place, and had to come and yelp about it right away. There aren't many…read moresalons I can think of that are this big and finished to such a fine detail, that let you call them up on the day, get an appointment for an hour and a halves time, turn up looking dishevelled and dripping with rain, and show a picture of an animé character and say "can you make me look like this please?" without laughing you out of the shop and to a mental institute. But that's exactly what I did, and it only cost £15. Maybe I picked a quite time to go and was somewhat fortunate, but I felt every bit as pampered (boy is it hard to sound manly when talking about haircuts) as I have done in the handful of other salons I have visited, and revisited. I'm not the chattiest of people when having my hair put at risk, and am quite satisfied to exchange meaningful words and light hearted jokes, rather than to talk aimlessly throughout the process. And from the looks of things, the fine men and women at Headmasters seemed more than happy to comply with either approach. So far as the consultation was concerned, it was easily the most practical I've had... Which was in no small part aided by me showing a picture of Spike Spiegel (from Cowboy Bebop) and asking if his gravity defying curls were physically possible. While assuring me that it would not look exactly the same, I personally felt it came as close to the fiction as reality would allow without the aid of a wig, and for that I'm bloomin' grateful. I have to say, I felt silly for making such a random request, but I was reassured incredibly quickly... Needless to say, I'll be returning to Headmasters again when I next have the urge to animé myself up!

The guys (and gals) who work in there are extremely friendly, and all know what they're doing when it comes to hair, and offer free consultations if you're unsure about what you want. Although it is a little on the pricey side, they have plenty of good offers on the go, and if you recommend a friend then you and your friend both get 50% off, so it can end up being a bargain.

It was so uncomfortable and every time I said no to an extra treatment they'd push and push, telling me I really should get it and I had to buy the products to take home. Listening in to the conversations around the room, every hairdresser was adding surcharges and hidden costs to customers appointments, waiting until they're in the seat to tell them this or that will be £30 more. My hairdresser was doing two appointments at once, meaning I was left sat with wet hair in the sink for half an hour. I'd booked for highlights, cut and blowdry but she said I could only have a trim off my ends and barely cut my hair. Not worth the money at all!

Unfortunately my experience at North Laine Hair Co was not so blissful... It started well, my stylist was chatty but not annoyingly so- we did the obligatory hometown and holiday talk and then he got down to business. I was provided with magazines and water and was treated to a great hair wash that included a splendid 5 minute head massage. Seriously, it was amazing, so much so that I feel bad about what I'm going to say next... Great head massage, poor hair cut. Unfortunately my stylist did not listen to my concerns about his cutting my layers in a centre parting when I wear my hair in a severe side parting. The result- totally foreseeable and highly irritating- all my layers ended up on one side. In addition to this, I specifically requested minimal use of styling products, yet left the salon with a Saved by the Bell wet-look perm! Curly hair is difficult, no question, but you've got to know how to cut it! You can print a £5 voucher from their website, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend redeeming it!

I wanted a bright dye on some layers of my black (not dyed) hair, and they suggested bleaching it first, but because I was on a budget, I wanted to skip the bleaching -- although I was very well aware of the risk of applying copper-colored dye onto stubborn black hair. Needless to say, it didn't show up very well, and Mel & James were nice enough to offer complimentary treatment after to lift the color. This surprised me, as most hair salons would not offer this kind of generosity. The color in the end, turned out exactly as I wanted! There's a student discount M-W for 20% off and Th-F for 10% off so that's a great deal! My total ended up being 38 pounds, which was well worth it for what I got. All in all, I'm glad I chose this place and would definitely come back for any further hair treatments! Thanks Mel & James!
