Jordan used to get her hair done here, and you can see why. One of things I like about Brighton is…read morethat it has many different sides to it, and Stage One encapsulates the trashy, fake hair and nails West Street side of Brighton - but in nice way. The owner/senior stylist is a guy called Neil, and he is a bit of an oddity, because he really isn't what you think of when you think of 'Brighton hairdresser'. He is a bit of a geezer, and - sorry Neil if you are reading this - his outfits are - ah - not exactly the kind of carefully-put-together angular hair cut/tight-black-top/scarf ensembles that are more familiar male hair stylist ground. He is more likely to be found wearing double denim. Unironically. He lords it over a bevvy of the ditziest, dippiest juniors I have ever seen. I've never seen one of them let loose on the scissors, in spite of the fact that I went in there on and off for a couple of years. The range of services available also reflect the clientèle that they serve, being one of the places in the area that do hair extensions. I had my hair permed there a few years ago, and they did a good job, although Neil would always try and style my hair with a very 80s wet-look wave after cutting it. The true value of the cut would only be revealed after I went home and washed my hair of the vintage Baywatch look. Altogether the salon has an unpretentious atmosphere, and they offer a wider range of services than a lot of salons in the area. Prices are moderate.

I had a fabulous hair cut from Manesh a few days ago. Couldn't be happier…read more I've had the same long (boring) hair style for a few years now and decided I wanted to do something radical: quirky, short, asymmetrical. So I needed someone who has vision and who really knows hair. I saw some great reviews about Manesh on a different website and decided to trust him with this big leap from boring to unusual and I'm so happy that I did. I told him my vague idea and he immediately had great ideas and knew how the cut would work with my face shape and my slightly curly/wavy hair. He's obviously super experienced and really understands hair. The salon was also very nice (my first time there) and the people were welcoming. It's not an overly-hip atmosphere like in some Brighton salons, thank goodness. Huge thanks to Manesh!!

I love going to the hairdressers, its feels indulgent and I usually leave with my self-confidence…read moreboosted to the tune of £40- a fair exchange every few months! Unfortunately my experience at North Laine Hair Co was not so blissful... It started well, my stylist was chatty but not annoyingly so- we did the obligatory hometown and holiday talk and then he got down to business. I was provided with magazines and water and was treated to a great hair wash that included a splendid 5 minute head massage. Seriously, it was amazing, so much so that I feel bad about what I'm going to say next... Great head massage, poor hair cut. Unfortunately my stylist did not listen to my concerns about his cutting my layers in a centre parting when I wear my hair in a severe side parting. The result- totally foreseeable and highly irritating- all my layers ended up on one side. In addition to this, I specifically requested minimal use of styling products, yet left the salon with a Saved by the Bell wet-look perm! Curly hair is difficult, no question, but you've got to know how to cut it! You can print a £5 voucher from their website, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend redeeming it!

Tucked away, down a little alley, you might think that Shine is hiding its light under a bushel…read more Shine is a beauty, hair and pampering salon in North Laine that has got a great reputation and is thriving despite the downturn. Ladies who lunch still need to look good, it seems. Not a usual environment, I won a haircut at Shine in a raffle. The whole Shine experience is about relaxation. Big comfy chars, a farmhouse table loaded with newspapers and mags and a laid-back ambience make this a very genial little place. Best of all, noone is peering through the window as you're groomed. So after a relaxing head and shoulder massage, an opulent hair wash, and a cup of coffee, my stylist Charles, got down to business. What a nice guy. An Isle of White native, he actually cared more about my hair than I do and suggested all sort of clever styles and looks that would make me look fabulous. I've got to say, being no expert on such things, he did a cracking job. But let's be honest. This place is a bit of a treat. A luxury most of us can ill afford. I think my do would have cost something like £50. That's par for the course, it was a lovely experience, but regrettably out of reach for me on my everyday budget.

Having been to Shine twice in November 2010, the 2nd time being a freebie to try to salvage the…read moreprevious disastrous result! Can't recall my hairdresser's name but he was one of the older guys that work there. He didn't listen to my original request, I went there with my hair in a terrible condition... I wanted an interesting colour technique, instead my hair came out looking brassy and with a discernible dark bar where he'd not quite matched the root highlights to the rest of my hair. The initial cost of £140 completely stunned me, normally I wouldn't complain but at that price I expect excellence. To give the salon their due, they offered to redo my hair FoC, but unfortunately it was with the same guy, again, he didn't really listen to me and seemed to bluff his way out of the bodge-up. I left the salon still unhappy, but couldn't be bothered to take it any further. My story is too long to detail here. It's now Jan 2011 and so reluctant to go to get my roots done because in my experience of Brighton hairdressers I just can't find a fabulous colourist, it doesn't matter how little or how much I pay. PS I had to give 1 star for this review, I suppose the one star would go the the Aveda hair products they use in Shine, they certainly resstored the condition. But the salon itself is awful, no towels to wrap around your head after washing, only something that looks and feels like a dishrag. Their LED/fluorescent lighting is useless especially to judge hair colour under. I'm all for 'green' businesses... but hair salons need bright, clean and flattering lighting. PS If my profile pic is the one with pink hair..... it's a wig!!! Wish my hair looked that good lol!!!

When I complained by phone about the cut, I was told it was my fault as I said it was okay before I left. I didn't want a blow dry so it had just been dried to the side I didn't see how uneven it was until I got home. I had asked for parking costs to come back as it is expensive to park and I am out of work. I was only having it cut for an interview. He didn't want to see pictures and told me if I came back I could park outside in the loading bay for it to be put right as it would only take a couple of minutes. As he constantly told me it was my fault not his, I decided not to go back as I was too worried that it might be worse. He didn't apologise once or accept any responsibility and was very intimidating.
