I go here as they do £20 short notice standby appointments, as opposed to a pricey £35 usually. This works well for me as I don't do much with my hair and a hair cut tends to be a last minute hurried decision when I've got some party or occasion coming up and I realise my hair looks a mess. I'm sure the staff agree on the 'mess' part too, judging by the looks of horror as my hair tumbles out from the hairband at the start of each cut. I have gone back there as it's fairly cheap and a friend reccomended it to me in the first place. But to be honest, I'd happily take another reccomendation - the two cuts I've had there have been by inexperienced stylists who seem to cut it in a bit of an improvised and sloppy ad-hoc way. But saying that, maybe I'd have got more attention if I'd paid full price.

I was recommended to this salon by my girlfriend, which entitled me to 50% off, so i thought why not. The salon inside is bright and immaculate. My hairdresser was tall slim blonde girl, who cut my hair very well. The only downside was the 2min hairwash and she didn't talk much. I also got some 'recommend a friend' cards, which entitles me to another 50% if my friends come to the salon.

The cut is not as precise as my usual hairdresser's but it is flattering and seems to hold it's shape well.

One of things I like about Brighton is…read morethat it has many different sides to it, and Stage One encapsulates the trashy, fake hair and nails West Street side of Brighton - but in nice way. The owner/senior stylist is a guy called Neil, and he is a bit of an oddity, because he really isn't what you think of when you think of 'Brighton hairdresser'. He is a bit of a geezer, and - sorry Neil if you are reading this - his outfits are - ah - not exactly the kind of carefully-put-together angular hair cut/tight-black-top/scarf ensembles that are more familiar male hair stylist ground. He is more likely to be found wearing double denim. Unironically. He lords it over a bevvy of the ditziest, dippiest juniors I have ever seen. I've never seen one of them let loose on the scissors, in spite of the fact that I went in there on and off for a couple of years. The range of services available also reflect the clientèle that they serve, being one of the places in the area that do hair extensions. I had my hair permed there a few years ago, and they did a good job, although Neil would always try and style my hair with a very 80s wet-look wave after cutting it. The true value of the cut would only be revealed after I went home and washed my hair of the vintage Baywatch look. Altogether the salon has an unpretentious atmosphere, and they offer a wider range of services than a lot of salons in the area. Prices are moderate.

The guys (and gals) who work in there are extremely friendly, and all know what they're doing when it comes to hair, and offer free consultations if you're unsure about what you want. Although it is a little on the pricey side, they have plenty of good offers on the go, and if you recommend a friend then you and your friend both get 50% off, so it can end up being a bargain.

It was so uncomfortable and every time I said no to an extra treatment they'd push and push, telling me I really should get it and I had to buy the products to take home. Listening in to the conversations around the room, every hairdresser was adding surcharges and hidden costs to customers appointments, waiting until they're in the seat to tell them this or that will be £30 more. My hairdresser was doing two appointments at once, meaning I was left sat with wet hair in the sink for half an hour. I'd booked for highlights, cut and blowdry but she said I could only have a trim off my ends and barely cut my hair. Not worth the money at all!

Unfortunately my experience at North Laine Hair Co was not so blissful... It started well, my stylist was chatty but not annoyingly so- we did the obligatory hometown and holiday talk and then he got down to business. I was provided with magazines and water and was treated to a great hair wash that included a splendid 5 minute head massage. Seriously, it was amazing, so much so that I feel bad about what I'm going to say next... Great head massage, poor hair cut. Unfortunately my stylist did not listen to my concerns about his cutting my layers in a centre parting when I wear my hair in a severe side parting. The result- totally foreseeable and highly irritating- all my layers ended up on one side. In addition to this, I specifically requested minimal use of styling products, yet left the salon with a Saved by the Bell wet-look perm! Curly hair is difficult, no question, but you've got to know how to cut it! You can print a £5 voucher from their website, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend redeeming it!

I wanted a bright dye on some layers of my black (not dyed) hair, and they suggested bleaching it first, but because I was on a budget, I wanted to skip the bleaching -- although I was very well aware of the risk of applying copper-colored dye onto stubborn black hair. Needless to say, it didn't show up very well, and Mel & James were nice enough to offer complimentary treatment after to lift the color. This surprised me, as most hair salons would not offer this kind of generosity. The color in the end, turned out exactly as I wanted! There's a student discount M-W for 20% off and Th-F for 10% off so that's a great deal! My total ended up being 38 pounds, which was well worth it for what I got. All in all, I'm glad I chose this place and would definitely come back for any further hair treatments! Thanks Mel & James!

I asked for a balayage to cover my roots that had grown out from previous highlights and blend in, stylist said I should have highlights instead as it would 'look the same'. She proceeded, and the end result was poor to say the least. Pics for evidence. The lighting in the salon is bad, as a few staff mentioned prior. I had a blow dry which wasn't completed properly. I was only able to see the mess they made once I had stepped out into natural lighting. 2. Went into the salon to ask for them to fix my hair, and was introduced to Warren who agreed it was awful, and booked me in for a fix up. I went in and had the treatment done. I heard conversations where the manager/owner was telling Warren to charge me full if I didn't complain, but if i did complain I should just be charged £30. Red flag. Treatment finished and looked better. Was told I had to pay £30 for the blow dry, so I paid without argument. Stepped out into natural light, and instead of brown to match my natural hair colour the top of my hair was now auburn/ginger. Pic attached. 3. Emailed saying I wasn't happy as I now have ruined hair (my hair is long so it's not an easy fix as it needs to grow out), and that I wanted a refund. Michelle told me to speak to Jay, another stylist, so he could fix it. I said no as I've already had 2 treatments and I don't want another bad one, so I asked for a full refund again. 4. They ignored my emails and messages for a month. They previously responded nearly instantly. Found out they blocked my Facebook account, so messaged them on my partners account. Michelle replied saying she would email me her situation. A few days pass and we try to message them on my partners account. This account is now blocked. 5. I send an email (all emails and messages sent were polite and professional) saying how I know they've blocked us, and we'll have to take it further if we don't hear back. Funnily enough, they respond in 20 minutes, disputing my claims, saying it was MY fault, and that I was threatening and harassing them along with other lies. Regardless of however many years of experience their team have they still cannot provide such good service so don't be fooled. I have read many reviews from this hair salon, before they were called Vybe Hair Design, one main point being their unprofessional behaviour. I also felt this when having my hair done, the eye rolling and the little comments that were made around the team made me feel uncomfortable. It's very clear they shouldn't be running a business if this is their attitude towards complaints and business in general. I've had opinions from other salons saying the result was awful.

After moving to Brighton I was considering travelling back to Hastings to get my hair cut as I've misplaced all my cool hats and was scared to venture anywhere new. I stumbled on Venus last month on payday (the ONLY day I excitedly splash the cash before the rent goes out), and am proud to say I've found my new hairdresser. There was a 25% discount for my first visit, (check out the offers tab on this page for your own voucher) with a promise of 15% off on my next, and free fringe cuts in between, although I've never been in for one. The staff are friendly and chatty, and mysteriously knew exactly what I wanted, even though I didn't. They were professional, helpful and were patient with my indecisiveness. I'll definitely be returning to take advantage of my next discount.
