Having recently moved to El Paso from Montréal, a city teeming with quality pastry shops…read more(especially french pâtisseries), I was on the lookout for a competent pastry shop here in town as soon as I landed. My first discovery was Belle Sucre, which, while struggling ever so slightly with actual french pastries (and french grammar, "sucre," a masculine noun, being "beau," not "belle"), excels at putting a french twist on american desserts. My second discovery was Orange Peel, a pastry shop that could stand toe-to-toe with Montreal's more eclectic (and less traditional) pastry shops (e.g., Pâtisserie Rhubarbe), were it to spontaneously relocate there. Inside this diminutive (but oh so quaint) pastry shop stands a refrigerated glass display filled with triple-threat confections that a) are simultaneously playful and homey in appearance, b) demonstrate exquisite texture (a feat made all the more surprising by the fact that many of the confections are gluten-free), and c) feature creatively combined and expertly balanced flavours that bring into play natural aromas and just enough sweetness. (Indeed, in a rare show of restraint for an american dessert establishment, sweetness is here kept on a leash, letting instead aromas come to the forefront of the flavour experience.) Although pastries on offer change regularly, they always come across as completely thought-through and carefully put-together, as if the recipes had been worked on and perfected over years. Indeed, there is an effortless quality to how the one single chef behind Orange Peel comes up with and executes new recipes, one that testifies to the extent of her pastry passion, knowledge, and skills. The first thing you should know, PUR is a part of NOSH located in the Monticello area. If you're just coming for Pur you can walk up straight to the cashier, but I recommend checking out all of what NOSH has to offer (I mean, c'mon... you're already there). The last drink I got was the Raw Red which had beets, cucumbers, carrots, apple, lemon, and ginger. It was just sweet enough and had a light enough beet flavor that I think my husband could've enjoyed it (he is not a beet fan at all). Another one that I got had a little heat to it and I loved it, but make sure you you check the ingredients well if you don't like spiciness. The price point is a little steep at a little over $9 a pop after tax, but these are pressed and bottled in house so I get the cost of labor and products. I would imagine as this business grows that price might have some wiggle room to come down. These juices are jam packed with fruits and veggies so this is also a really great way to get your daily in take. And it doesn't hurt that they taste good too! You can actually order online and they are a real deal nut factory, but I used to live nearby so when in Rome. The first time I came to Azar I was actually surprised by how small it was. I was expecting something so much larger because of the ridiculous amount of assorted nuts and candies they carry. But what was there, was more than enough. The selection is limited to about five or six shelves with three or four bags of each item. No joke there was a lady taking one (sometimes two or three) of everything. Every time I stood in front of a new product, she wedged herself between me and the bag of nuts and said, "Sorry, gotta get this one too." She may or may not have began petting a bag of maple flavored assorted nuts while purring the words, "Mine, mine, mine." What really amazed me was the ludicrously low prices. I walked out of this place with a tin of mixed nuts, flavored nuts, and gummy bears for less than $15. Sweet! There was a single employee in the store manning both the register and the phones so she periodically disappeared, but rang me up quickly when I was ready to go. Definitely check out the website and order some tasty snacks, but if you have the chance go in, load up, and avoid those pesky shipping fees.
