River Lodge Log Cabins - Living room of "The Rose" cabin

I want to start by saying this cabin is fine. It's not horrible, but it's also not great. My…read morehusband and I were looking for a weekend away from home where we could relax, unplug from technology and still be able to have our dogs with us. We came across River Lodge Log Cabins on a site that said it was pet friendly, was budget friendly and did not include Wifi (just what we wanted). The cabin was fairly secluded with a pretty view. It was on a property with another cabin where they've taken the time to create a barrier between neighbors. The cabin overlooks the French Broad River on the outskirts of Hot Springs, NC, a cute little mountain town. We wanted to take a day to visit the Biltmore and this cabin was located conveniently enough for a short 45 minute drive to Asheville, but still didn't have a touristy feel. I would not say that my husband and I had any complaints, per se, but there are definitely things about this rental that were strange to us or things that the owners could do that would go a long way to adding comfort to the experience. In terms of comfort, below is a list of things we found to be lacking -no remote for DVD/VHS player. Remote control provided was "universal", but had not been programmed to control DVD player so if we needed to navigate a menu or pause a movie, we had to jump up to do so -not a huge deal, but definitely an easy fix to create a more comfortable experience -no central heat/air. Heat was provided exclusively by a gas fireplace which either got too hot or didn't provide enough heat. Instructions for system were handwritten and vague with some instructions crossed out. Very confusing. Type instructions for clarity. -instructions for check out were odd. We were expected to clean all dishes and sweep the floor which is no big deal, but made us question the cleanliness of the place. Did the owners clean since the last guest? We were instructed to leave all linens on the bathroom floor to be washed, but not the quilt on the bed. Does that mean that the quilt was not washed before we arrived? We were also expected to take out the trash before we left. Cleaning our own dishes and running a broom over the floor is okay (especially since we have dogs), but we didn't really feel much like guests on a getaway when we were expected to do all the chores before vacating -there were a few things we felt were half measures on the owners parts. For example, no coffee on site. We expected maybe a days worth of single serve coffee, just a little token as guests, but there wasn't anything. There were also only two toilet papers rolls. We stayed 4 days and it ended up being fine, but had we run out of toilet paper, we didn't have access to more on site, we would have had to go get our own. Overall, seclusion is great, but a few modern amenities or tokens of appreciation for our stay might have gone a long way. Customer Service-just a few things here: -when I called to inquire about the cabins, the lady was a little short and answered the phone with a stern hello, which I thought was odd given that potential customers call that line. -we had zero interaction with the owners upon arrival or checkout. We're happy we weren't bothered while there, but a quick email check in asking if all is well and/or to make sure we found everything okay would have been welcomed. Overall, it was fine. I probably won't go out of my way to recommend it and if we stay in the area again, we will likely go another direction than to stay at this cabin.

The drive up the mountainside was beautiful (and slightly scary) but oh-so worth it! I was relieved to have made it through the weekend without a flat tire considering the gravel roads we had to trek up to get to the cabin and to the beautiful hiking spots nearby. We made the whole trip in a Honda Accord but with the knowledge we have now, we'd likely get a more rugged rental car for our next visit. As for the cabin...right away I was in awe of how cute and cozy the whole cabin/property was! The cabin was perfectly stocked with everything you'd need for two guests (planning to share a comfortable queen-sized bed) - soap, towels, linens, dishes, silverware, etc. Everything you'd have to bring on your own was very explicitly and clearly stated on their website so we were more than prepared for the weekend trip. I've always loved the idea of "glamping" in a furnished cabin and this was everything and more. The cabin was decked out with new kitchen appliances, a toaster, plenty of pots and pans, drinking glasses, cooking spices, a clean stove top, washer/dryer, spacious shower with benches, outdoor grill, new bath vanity, adjustable TV, fireplace and easily-adjustable air conditioning unit with an electronic thermostat right on the wall. The outdoor patio had a table with bench seats and grill supplies such as an extra tank of propane, a lighter, a spatula and tongs. There was also a nice rocking bench fit for two, a fenced in yard for the pups and a cute little doggy door with a ramp leading straight from the patio to the yard. And saving the best for the last, the patio included a spacious private hot tub! Throughout the cabin, there were friendly, clearly written tips/instructions posted to remind you of how to adjust the thermostat, what settings to keep for the hot tub and how to use the washer/dryer, etc. This was very helpful! I also appreciated the "concierge book" of local activities, menus from local restaurants, and maps with directions to local hiking spots. This was helpful considering there were very few spots along the mountain-side where either of us got any service on our cellphones - a detail that is also clearly stated on their website. Overall, this was a wonderful, relaxing getaway I surely hope to repeat! Thank you to Amy, Mike and Lisa for all of your hardwork and attention to detail!

The cabin was adorable, sparkling clean, and wonderfully secluded. We enjoyed the gorgeous sunset mountain views from the porch and hot tub, and the amazing concierge book filled with restaurant menus, hikes, and activities. They have thought about everything you'd need! From a washer/dryer to a flashlight by the door to take your dog out at night. It was so nice to have no phone service and disconnect from city living for the weekend. I highly recommend this place and we will certainly be back soon! Bonus points, the town of Hot Springs was also very dog friendly! It was so fun to take her to the hardware store and out to lunch with us.

Pack a cooler and spend a weekend in the great outdoors. In town there is rafting, tubing, and the hot mineral springs. There are a couple of restaurants and pubs too. Although town is just 10 minutes away, once you get here you won't want to leave. Owners Ken and Amy are the most hospitable people you will ever meet. They start a campfire on Friday and nights at the main house and it doesn't go out til Monday morning. Bring your guitars and sit around with them, or have your own fire at your private cabin. The cabins are rustic and mountain themed. You will enjoy the silence of a night of camping with the luxuries of a bed, hot running water, electricity, and a nice shower. They even have sweet tea in the fridge for you when you arrive!
