Much is island themed, but Jessie is very selective and sophisticated. She has 'hidden gems' that don't have any connection to the island but are beautiful works of art. For example, on our last visit around Thanksgiving, we were thrilled to find a superb print by a French artist who did a series of etchings for a Proust novel. We had a hard time deciding on just one, and we love it. Over the past 15 or so years, we've bought a number of paintings and prints from Jessie. She's always a pleasure to spend time with, and the gallery is great.

The art inside is something you may never see again. You must stop if you are in Newport. The hours were confusing to me, so give a call or look at their web site to see when they are open. The art, all of it, on display is wonderful. Each piece is set perfectly, the lighting perfect and the story behind each piece is fascinating. If you are a Rockwell fan at all, you have to go here. You may think you know Rockwell's but I saw illustrations I had no idea existed, from the cute to the serious to the beauty of telling of a time in US history. The John Rogers sculptures are really something to see. This was my first time noticing his work and I just stood there in awe. Enjoy.

You will not find any works that make you wonder about meaning or whether you are being kidded. No abstraction, no bold geometric designs, no blobs of paint, no pure blacks or reds. You are never in doubt about whether these artists possess real talent. These are all artists who made good money while they were alive! I liked it a lot and I'm glad we just happened upon it. In addition to finding a couple of dozen works by Rockwell, you will see landscapes, beautiful women, handsome men, a few portraits, some excellent caricatures, and a lot of art that became the covers of books and magazines. The gift shop has some impressive quality copies of the art that you can take home for a price. The only negatives I should mention is that no photography is allowed (copyright issues) and sometimes it is hard to read the captions in the darkened rooms. Treat yourself to a different genre of high quality art--this is worth a one to two hour visit.

We were 3/4 way through our first floor tour when another party arrived. Instead of adding them to the tour, and then covering what they missed, she asked them to wait. The living room is beautiful. Plaster work, beautifully hand painted walls (by a modern artist), elegant furnishings. Photos of the home pre-restoration are showed and discussed in this room. So much work has been done! There are also photos of the family and you learn a bit about them here. We also had the opportunity to ask questions about the home and family. Through this Q&A we discovered in what types of 'shipping' the family were involved. The dining room table displays a variety of period china. The fireplaces on this floor are marble. The dining room light fixture is very interesting, and although not original fits very well and makes a statement. Sadly, the kitchen is not restored for guests to view. There is however a butlers pantry in the dining room displaying more serve ware. An Antarctic research station is named after Captain Palmer and a live feed is shown in the next room as well as several ship models including the one Capt. Palmer was on when he discovered the continent. Information on the gentleman who created these models is also presented. There is a variety of information in this room about Capt. Palmers Antarctic discovery and one of his shipping trades: seal pelts. The short hallway between dining room and this include other items of trade such as Palmer tea and jade. The upper floors are self toured and there are three of them. Stair cases narrow as you ascend. The highest point is a small cupola surrounded by windows with a small bench seat that fits about three. There was a nice breeze with the windows open and long views. The two floors between include bedrooms, 'toilet' rooms, children's play room, fire alarm display, sewing room, office space and storage. Plenty of old furnishings, linens, toys etc. I particularly love the sewing box. Beautiful, intricate work. The price for the two locations is very reasonable and if you have time, are looking for an air conditioned space, love history/architecture/home décor, then this is going to be a nice stop. Free parking is available at the side of the house. Enter at the grand front door. A gift shop is located just inside to the left of the entrance. A restored ice house, storage and out houses are behind the home. I saw no public facilities (but didn't ask). There is a fair amount of land with the home including a small pathway with bench seating along the water on the other side of parking. In July there were plenty of mosquitos. Picnic tables are located behind the research library next to parking. Tickets may be purchased on line through their website as well as at the Stonington light house museum. Stonington residents and historical society member admission is free. Military, senior and first responder discounts are available. July and August the museum is open daily 10am - 4pm. The rest of the year hours are limited - check the website for information.

He was credited with discovering Antarctica (whilst hunting for seals) in 1820 at the young age of 21 with a minimal crew. He grew rich and built a stately home in his birthplace of Stonington, CT. After his brothers wife died, Nathaniel and his wife (who were childless) shared the home with his widowed brother and his 4 children. It was great to learn the history of this family and home, feeling transported to another time and imaging what it must have been like. I want to know more. Beautiful furnishings, interesting history and a beautiful setting. Parking is free and plentiful and the grounds are serene and quiet. A great way to spend an hour or so in this quaint town.

8/3/24: Came to the Saturday session of the 3 day 2024 Newport Jazz Festival 8/2- 8/4…read more Long line entering through the festival security. However, everything was orderly. The Rhode Island State Police and other authorities had a great handle on everything. I've been to the festival a couple of times. Think it's the largest turnout I've seen. Overall, the music was great! Vocalist Samara Joy rocked the house! Lots of frozen lemonade $7 sm.& $9 large size, food and souvenir vendors. There were several wine and beer tents. Just a couple of suggestions for Newport Jazz Organizers for future events. -Having a Jazz TSA type pass that expedites your entry. -A couple of attendees had overhead chair coverings. According to what's allowable or not, it clearly mentions about not using overhead chair coverings. I'm mentioning it because there were two in front of us. The overhang of the empty chair flew back like a projectile . It would've hit my friend, if I didn't catch it. Several other attendees throughout the festival had chair overhangs. Festival Tips: A water taxi is probably one of the best ways for transport to the festival. Be sure to bring/wear sunscreen if you burn.

From Ticket purchases, parking, bus ride from car to venue, to plant-based food options, I was immensely infatuated and pleased. Attended 2 of the 3 days and was able to hear a variety musicians from all the stages. Many new musicians I was not familiar with but now am a certified follower of their artistry in music. Definitely return again, and Newport is such a lovely elevated area with a serene feel which so reminds me of Yacht Rock on SiriusXM.... All good vibes!

Turns out is was designed by same guy that designed the Statue of Liberty's pedestal and they're installing an display of artifacts from Lady Liberty. Will have to do back for that. Fascinating place.
