Oh, how I love this sculpture!…read more It is both whimsical and serious, literal and abstracted, colorful yet depicting water which is known to be clear.... in other words, it presents a dichotomy or two, spanning categories and allegories, and to me, this is what makes this piece successful. It caters to the sensibilities of people who have vastly differing tastes in art: it appeals to people who prefer more literal depictions of subject matters and to those who prefer more modern, contemporary and even more minimalist abstractions. Furthermore, it is well-suited and grounded in its element, paying homage to Vancouver's rainy season(s), its reliance and location by the ocean, and the city's historical dependence on marine industries and water-dependent agricultural industries (not to mention, the human need for water). The site chosen for this piece's installation could not be more perfect: right along the waterfront, across from the "sails" of Canada Place, with the inlet beside it and the glorious Stanley Park forests just east and the mountains just north providing picturesque backdrops. As a humorous aside, whenever I see this tall, slender, blue raindrop, I personally also see a teardrop, as I tend to be sad when the rains come, and the skies are grey and it's so...dreary. So this raindrop can also be interpreted as a teardrop for those of us who have SAD (seasonal affective disorder) lol.

We had some time to kill during our trip, so I booked a time for my group to come in. It is a pretty small spot, but it is well thought out "gallery" to take fun or silly photos with your group (or date). It's like different backdrops for you to take your own photos. Plan to spend at least 30-45 minutes, so that you are not in a rush. You'll want to try different poses and angles for each space/scene/exhibit. My fave was probably the anti-gravity room, the optical illusion space (the one where each side makes a person look super big/tall and the other side shrinks the person, like Alice in Wonderland). Don't miss the mirrored room towards the back. Reservations are a must, at least currently, they don't take walk ins.

The gift shop is also pretty special. They have Native Northwest items, which I love, but they also have other wonderful items. I could have spent a lot of time here if I hadn't been in a hurry. There's a lovely courtyard outside to sit in and lots of coffee shops and restaurants in the area. I got a 2 year membership so I can go back often since I enjoy the place so much. If you have a big bag or backpack you will need to use a locker which takes a Canadian quarter - which you will get back. There are plenty of nice washrooms and there's an elevator if you can't do stairs. Staff are kind and helpful.

It's a gorgeous 2-floor monument to the legendary Haida master artist, Bill Reid (1920 - 1998), and other established and upcoming artists. Before our visit, Gayle and I had never seen a museum like this. Outstanding! The museum space is full of natural light, great viewing angles, and compact enough to see it all and comprehensively in a relatively short period of time. We were overwhelmed with the sculptures, paintings, jewelry, and more, but not in a huge museum sort of way. The folks here know their art were more than happy to explain anything we asked. Their well curated gift shop is an extension of that. If you want a manageable deep dive into Haida and related art, and find yourself saying "Oh Wow!) at lot, this is your place.

Apparently he did some (by modern standards) bad stuff. They toppled his statue in February 2022. Look for the weird mound to the SW corner of Powell/Water and Carrall/Alexander (ie Maple Tree Square). They try to keep this old district as historic looking as possible. Roads are will made of brick, and the pedestrian barriers are old school posts and chains. Some of the buildings are newer, but they keep the old historical facades. Actually has a nice 19th century feel with a bit of imagination. Food is overpriced, and the streets are filled with hordes of tourists during the cruise ship season (summer months). Nice lively feel. Be sure to visit the famous steam clock (spoiler - it is actually electrically powered, but belches steam to keep the tourists happy), and pop by the Lamplighter Pub (officially Vancouver's oldest pub, but I think the Cambie pub nearby is technically older) for a beer.

June, 2025. Canada Place, Vancouver. We strolled outside around Canada Place on a Monday evening,…read moreto orient ourselves to where our cruise would be sailing the following day. It's a large area on the harbor, anchored by the cruise terminal, the convention center, the Pan Pacific hotel ($$$$), the Fairmont Hotel ($$$$) across the street, a broad boardwalk with benches along the harbor, the iconic Vancouver sign, and shopping. It was very relaxing to watch seaplanes taking off and landing on the harbor while trying to get a glimpse of marine creatures in the water. We weren't too successful on the latter pursuit. We knew where to check-in the following day, and again where to disembark from the ship later. Unfortunately, for how well the area appears to be designed, there are significant bottlenecks that contribute to VERY slow moving lines, especially when thousands of passengers are disembarking from the ship. You're forced to walk up along narrow pathways near the parking garage. It's a fairly long distance, without accessibility features, and passengers are three-deep in width inching their ways out with their suitcases. Our plan was to take an Uber from the terminal to our hotel (less than a mile away) but decided to wait in a covered spot for the crowds to dissipate and for the rain to lighten. It took about an additional hour once we were already at street level.
