We did have some challenges with my husband's demanding care at first but overtime we worked it our with the caring Director of Nursing Annie and amazing new Executive Director Michael. There were so many positives at Brazo Towers that I recommend it. The care of a stroke patient such as my husband is very difficult and necessitates a very active family advocate all the time. We were very disappointed in the lack of patient activities. Although a vigorous monthly calendar was posted very little activities occurred during my husband's stay. When we were leaving we saw indication regarding possible improvement in that area as well.

I am still haunted by the level of care I received during my two months at the Buckingham. I opted…read moreto go there for recovery and physical therapy after a serious automobile injury. What I did not realize was that skilled nursing and rehab are housed within the same facility, and the majority of patients are fragile elderly who actually live there full time. Most do not ever leave their beds, let alone their rooms. I felt completely alone--no one to talk to and the few wretched "activities" poorly organized, staffed and attended. The facility is indeed attractive and well maintained with pleasant common areas and dining room (90% empty at meal times). My room was very nice, with two large windows that overlooked greenery. The food was decent and occasionally quite good. With the exception of an excellent PT staff, the quality of care was sub-par and I fear the same as almost all these places. I did, however, expect more. When admitted I was not greeted by admissions staff or given any indication how the facility was run. It was several days before PT was initiated. The nursing staff consists of one nurse on duty at any one time for half a floor. The number of aides varies depending on how many patients are filling rooms. At the worst of times there was only one per half floor, approximately 30 rooms. It was not unusual to wait an hour for help out of bed. As soon as I was well enough to start doing things for myself, I was completely ignored-- bed unmade unless I made it myself, sheets not changed. When asking a medical question of a nurse I often got the reply, "I don't know; I'm only a nurse". One nurse was green as grass, another freely admitted she wished she wasn't there and knew she was treating her patients accordingly. Nurses and aides would talk on their personal cell phones or listen to broadcasts on them while working. The "doctor" was a medical professional who made rounds once a week with a perfunctory, "So how are we doing today?". The nurse practitioner visited twice a week and was on call the other times. Any of my queries had to go through her. While she was empathetic I found it hard to put faith in her diagnoses. There were mistakes made with medications. Instructions for cleaning wounds were not followed. My blood pressure was running high for a month before I figured out I was not being given my blood pressure medication. Worst of all was being woken up at 5 AM to have my vitals checked "to make sure you are not dead", to be followed shortly thereafter by an aide turning the lights full on to empty wastebaskets before her shift ended. Meals brought to the room were at 7:30, 11:30 and 4:30 and almost always cold. You were expected to be in bed at 8PM so the carousing in the common areas could begin--laughing and talking among the aides and nurses with complete disregard for sleeping patients. I also had the misfortune of being right above the generator. When that kicked in (at the slightest flicker of power) the noise was horrific. In conclusion I will repeat that PT, although only one hour a day Monday-Friday, was stellar, with the PT staff actually helping beyond their jobs (to get the tv fixed, the heater fixed, socks that fit, etc.). They put together the walker I ordered and altogether helped me get out of the Buckingham as soon as was possible!

I was not the patient, but am a family member of the patient. The food appeared to be ok - lots of variety, lots of heavy, fatty foods though. As bad as our experience was I feel this place is probably still in the upper 25% of "care" (I use that word ironically). Scary thought for what the others are like.

So far, I visit my father with a smile each day rather than worrying what "problem" or lack of care I would discover. Jill and Norma (Activities Directors) put together a wonderful calendar of events that my father truly enjoys! Raquel (Move In Coordinator) assisted me throughout the move in process and followed through after to make sure everything needed was completed. Ashley (front desk receptionist) allows greets me with a smile and ready to answer my questions and get me answers as I learn the ropes. No place is perfect but The Abbey checks so many boxes which were not provided at our previous location. Most of all, both my father and I enjoy just being part of this community! The level of activities and healthy yummy food here at The Abbey is amazing!!! Each activity I have been to, I see the staff engaging with the residents and the staff leading the activity excited to be there and offer this for the residents! My dad's bubbly spirit has returned after moving to The Abbey! The care staff whom I have seen are ready to help you and point you in the right direction if they cannot. They truly enjoy their job and helping their residents! The administration attend many events and know the residents. The are professional and polite. Sadly many assisted living and memory care facilities take advantage of the elderly who are the most vulnerable and silence their voice or twist events and then blame on the residents lack of memory! Selecting The Abbey at Westminster in Houston was a wonderful choice for me. Although you may not be in this area, look at the description of this place for comparison wherever u are. There are several layouts here. I chose one bedroom with 1 & 1/2 baths. Closet is huge. Living area while not what I used to have is lovely and ample. Food that is always an issue is wonderful. There are choices for all meals, substitutions are available, special dietary needs are accommodated and Chef will work with anyone. T he only drawback is that you are likely to gain a bit of weight mostly because the desserts are fantastic. One of the things that mattered to me was how to maintain my physical shape at my age. The exercise choices are unbelievable and will suit whatever you need. There is also Hydrotherapy included in the monthly rent. It's rare to have it and helps me so much. You will have to look up what it is. The moving in process has been as good as it can be. Staff have been so accommodating in this very difficult process. Also, must mention that the other residents here have been kind and welcoming. They all seem to relate to how hard it is to make such an enormous change in these later years. Our experience has been a solid 10 with every aspect of the community, and we wouldn't necessarily qualify as easy to please. The grounds and buildings are immaculate, staff in all areas are friendly and accommodating, and the food in all dining venues is consistently restaurant quality with incredible variety. Residents are genuinely enjoying their retirement here and there is a relaxed, friendly culture. There is an impressive range of activities, classes, interest groups and entertainment. Having spent a 40-yr career in healthcare, I asked to tour the assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing units. All reflected high quality care in immaculately clean, homelike surroundings. As long term care goes, this is as good as it gets (as a former nursing home administrator and director of nursing service, I'm in a position to assess this accurately). We researched life plan communities for several yrs and are satisfied that we made the best choice, as more than 20k other Erickson residents have done across the US.

So when my sister texted me they contacted her, I called them back and was very blunt and up front. Information had not been updated and changed and I should be the first contact. Dad moved with me and the past weeks had been chaotic as appts were made and my phone was binging and zinging and singing as duplicates of calls and texts were being exchanged. Debbie said she understood. She would have the Occupational Therapist and the RN contact me to schedule. At least that went smoothly. But OT was once a week. She'll be back next week. ... Hope her assessment was good - but I still cringed. Home Health Care was selected because 76 year old dad was in a hospital bed for 2 weeks. But the same ones don't stay committed to the care. PT contacted Sis Because bing-zing-eek! until I was added to the mix. It's a good thing this isn't a TRUE HIPAA violation, right? Glad it's family and not ex wives or girlfriends, since information isn't updated in the SAME COMPANY. Oh. So an RN is coming Friday. I explain dad's INR is low and we really need to make sure we check it. I also explained some medicine changes and his PCP's concern to monitor his vitals as we endure his safety. RN calls AFTER she left with Dad's INR. Which was far from therapeutic, as ANY RN would know. They tend to want to schedule the day before. I don't understand, since it's preapproved by Doctor orders. Nothing has been consistent. No RN visit the following week. Actually, only one person came all week and PT was supposed to be three times .... no one even called this week. Whether it's your loved one or someone you know, don't use this service. It's my first personal experience with home health care but they truly suck. Their scores were high on the documents provided. I'm definitely getting in touch with medicare. I don't know what an Aiden score is, but I'll reach out to them. From what I hear, their coordinator had helped the company immensely, then left. I think he was the driving force because it's a putter now.
