I recorded an EP of 5 songs there last spring. I had never made a studio recording before, never even been inside a music studio, and didn't know what to expect. What they helped me create went way beyond what I had hoped for. Briget Boyle, the lead producer on my recording, has an incredible musical ear and instinct for what makes for a great sounding recording. She not only guided me through the recording process, making suggestions as needed, but arranged for a drummer and bassist (per my request) on some songs, and provided invaluable direction in shaping the sound. She also added keyboards herself, again per my request and in collaboration with me, which significantly enhanced the songs by adding dimension and texture. With masterful recording and engineering, as well as mixing and mastering, the end result was nothing short of magical to my ears when compared to what I was starting from. My songs went from simple guitar-and-voice bedroom recordings to fully fleshed out, professional and dynamic tracks that could be played on the radio, streaming services, etc. in terms of the quality of the sound. My vision for the songs, how I heard them in my head, was realized to my complete satisfaction- indeed way beyond what I had hoped for as a novice in the recording world. I've been producing on Ableton for a few years, and I was specifically looking to work with someone in studio to learn and improve my mixes in general. I spent a few hours with Chris in his Oakland studio and learned so much during that time. It was one of the most informative sessions I've had since I started making music! Chris shared numerous different techniques and workflow tips with me while making suggestions and helping refine my track. It's clear that he's an expert in Ableton, but is also generous in sharing his knowledge. After our in-person session, we collaborated for another week or so via phone/e-mail through the mastering process. Throughout this process, he was thorough, patient, and gave invaluable feedback and recommendations - all while communicating effectively. Something I really appreciate about working with Chris is that he makes suggestions and gives honest feedback, but also makes sure that he respects the original vision for what the track should sound like. Panda Studio's website revealed a recording environment with equipment and staff that appeared to rival what I had used in the North Bay. I rolled the dice and booked sessions to record an album. Ryan Palma, my engineer, was technically and musically proficient and didn't waste a minute finding the sound I was looking for. My album was recorded, mixed and mastered, all at Panda! I chose Ryan Palma from the list of engineers affiliated with Panda Studios in Fremont CA based on his online bio. I needed someone familiar with a wide range of genres as my influences include pop, rock and R&B from the 60's to now. I consider Ryan a local genius for recording, mixing and mastering music.
