I thought spoon closed down about a year ago? Am I wrong or has it re-opened?

L'Olivetto sits on an unassuming street in Mossley Hill, Liverpool. In passing you might think it…read morewas a coffee shop or the sort, but it turns out to be a real culinary jewel, and one of those rare ones... an independent Italian restaurant that does Italian food properly, and well. As you walk in, it strikes you that the space is larger than it looks from outside, with slate floors and tables in similar tones with simple wooden furniture, but the restaurant is dominated on one side by the giant ornate wooden bar, which takes the centre stage. The rest of the restaurant is decorated in shades of olive (a natural choice, with "L'Olivetto" translating to "The Olive Grove"), but is rather minimalist, meaning that it can feel a little stark. I think if the tables had simple white tablecloths, or if there were some curtains or plants, it would make the venue feel a bit more cosy, and would absorb the echo a little bit. Not to say that it's not pleasantly decorated, with some fab quirky decorating features! The bar also had some great little additions that you might not think about. There is a glass containing reading glasses, for those who inevitably forget to bring theirs and have to squint at the menu, as well as two variations of a loyalty card, one for the daytime crowd, promising free coffee and cake, and the other for the evening crowd, offering a free bottle of house wine. A nice touch! The menu is split into several options, including a lighter meals section, set meals, and general a la carte. The tables also have promotions on them, mentioning how each night there is some variation of a special offer, such as 20% off on tuesdays, and a half price bottle of prosecco with your meal on "Fizzy Fridays". The prices generally are very good too, considering everything is made fresh to order. We chose to start with Funghi Impanali, breaded mushrooms which gave a good crunch before giving in to some incredibly tasty and juicy mushrooms that had been sauteed in garlic butter. When somewhere can take something as simple as breaded garlic mushrooms and make it truly tasty and impressive, that's a good sign! For our mains, I chose the Pollo Saltimbocca from the light lunch menu, which comprised of chicken fillets wrapped in parma ham sautéed with olive oil, garlic and sage. I accompanied this with a couple of side dishes of Patate Saltate, which is potatoes sauteed with onions, garlic and parsley but which visually was a bowl of absolutely mouth watering looking little roast potatoes! They were crunch and delicious and very moreish! I could eat a whole bowl of them for a snack! I also had the spinach tossed with onion, garlic and parmesan, My main and sides were delicious, and I was really impressed with both the taste and the price. Phil R opted for the classic Spaghetti Carbonara; spagetti with diced pancetta in a rich cream sauce with parmesan, he was also given the option to add additional chicken to the dish, which he did gladly. For his side, he chose to try the zucchini fries, which came with a garlic aioli for dipping, and which were unsual but pretty tasty! We'd seen them appearing a lot in trendy restaurants, so it seemed a perfect opportunity to give them a try (try them, seriously!). Phil R was completely taken aback by the quality and flavours of his pasta, and was singing its praises and making happy noises throughout. We've been to Rome and Pisa and eaten *actual* Italian food, and he didn't sound as impressed then as he did by this meal! Well done, L'Olivetto! We were given dessert menus, but had already been sneakily noseying at the cake chiller cabinet in the corner of the restaurant, and had made up our minds already! I chose to go for the cherry crumble, served cold, with cream, and Phil R chose to go for the triple chocolate gateaux. We were both smitten with our choices, which were delicious and great quality. We were told they were from an actual nearby Italian bakery, keeping the Italian flavours going throughout. Some of the desserts were prepared freshly in house too... we'll try them next time! The service was friendly and professional, the food was absolutely superb and of a great quality and value, and the venue was bright, modern, and spotlessly clean. It was also nice at the end of my meal to see that they had a selection of teas available, so I had an Earl Grey to round it all off. Perfect. If you're near Liverpool, go along and give them a try, they're really worth it. We decided that we'd be happy enough to drive over there from Bolton if we fancied a nice meal and experience, because that's one thing they really delivered. Bravissimo, L'Olivetto!

The menu is a mixture of Modern European and British food which isn't too pricey for the calibre of restaurant - a main meal will set you back about £16. The interior is clean cut and modern with an atmosphere that immediately puts you at ease. I think this is a difficult task considering that Spire is home to some of the best chefs in the North West.

However there are plenty of fixed price meals with multiple courses that are excellent value, so even if you're feeling a little light in the pocket department you can still enjoy a highly accolade restaurant. The service here is really top notch, it can occasionally be a little slow but it's friendly and attentive and that's what ultimately matters. Even the owner gets involved which is always a good sign. There's a wonderful atmosphere and the decor is more than gorgeous, but it's the food that's the star here, especially the crispy squid starter with chilli sauce and pak choi. Mouthwatering deliciousness. There's no particular food 'theme' here other than painfully hip and modern, hence why you'll find gnocchi and mushrooms accompanying turbot on the same menu, but I loved all the combinations. The portions aren't massive as you'd expect from a restaurant like this, but they're certainly sufficient enough. The unhurried ambience really adds to the quality of the place and you feel like you can relax, and the staff seem to genuinely want to listen to you. The desserts are stunning as well. All in all, all boxes ticked - attention to detail here is paramount and that's reflected in the quality.

The decor is excellent and extremely smart and modern and you feel comfortable and relaxed at all times here. The staff are uber professional they give you the right amount of time to decide on your food and generally just pay the utmost attention to your every need. Jalons has live music every evening and this is something most restaurants cannot compete with and it really makes the whole evening an ultra experience. This is something that Jalons really has in its' favour and it is simply about more than just food everything is done excellently. Jalons is not cheap but it is worth the money and this is the kind of place you would come to, for a smart meal not just an establishment you pop into to fill your face. The actual tastes here are sensational and the pan fried pork fillet I chose for my main is some of the best meat I have tasted anywhere in Liverpool. Jalons is upmarket and worth every penny you spend, it is just a surprise to see it in a student area as it would be at home in the classiest areas of the city

Having got there before either of them, I ordered a glass of Sambuca (no love, not a shot, a glass) and sat sipping whilst waiting for the impending doom. To be honest, the night went downhill from there. Once the rentals had turned up, we were seated at our table and a fair bit of fuss was made over me as it was my birthday. I gritted my teeth and smiled politely. After another sambuca the wine came, and we ordered our food. I can't remember what I had but knowing me it was probably chicken, and it was lovely. I'm not one to leave stuff on my plate usually, but I am a slow eater. This was gone in record time. Unfortunately someone cocked up the dessert otherwise it would've been a perfect meal. I have a feeling my mum organised for a cake to be brought out, and I had told her that I don't like chocolate cake (yes, I know, how disgusting of me). What came out of the kitchen with all the staff singing around it? A WHOLE chocolate cake. I then had to pretend to eat some of it while everyone watched, and then asked for it to be packed up and forgotten in the kitchen please thank you very much. To top things off, we had champagne, and I'm afraid to say that at this point my stomach started churning. However, I managed to get through the whole experience with grace and dignity before legging it back to my flat and hugging the toilet. There is live music every night at Jalons these days, and it is a thoroughly pleasant place to go for a meal. Just not with my parents and a tummy lined with Sambuca!

The restaurant is well known for its seafood, particularly its prawns. The chef's recommendation is olives while you're perusing through the menu, scallops to start, prawns for your main, and cheesecake for dessert - and I can't say I'd disagree! It is a little pricey but for the quality of the food, the atmosphere and the staff, it is well worth it. The Patio does have an early bird menu Tuesday-Thursday between half 5 and 7.15pm which is a little easier on the pockets with 3 courses for £15.95

The Patio is by no means the worst place along this busy stretch of high street but it's certainly a little confused with what it is trying to be. As soon as our party arrived there was a tension from the rigid manner in which the staff greeted us and bizarrely kept us waiting in a sort of pre-table purgatory near the door. Having already booked and with only two other tables in the restaurant, it was a bit strange why the staff would want us to sit in what was a bit like a doctor's surgery while we studied the menu - the bar area was hardly the best or cosiest area of what is a bright and tasteful restaurant? - this isn't fine dining and it's not what any of us expected so it would have been more enjoyable with a more relaxed manner. When we were finally seated on the wobbly table near the back - worth the wait then! - the food was pretty good. The chicken parfait - soft pate to you and me - was lovely and the duck breast with mash was very tasty although a little over done and a bit tougher than I would like but overall the group enjoyed the portions and good blend of flavours all round and with 3 courses at 15 quid on a sunday evening it's onvious why this is a popular place.
