Utterly torn between three and four stars with this pub. It should have been a four-five without…read morequestion. But they really know how to let themselves down. The first night we tried to come here (there's only two pubs in the village, see) they were fully booked for dinner. We got kinda excited at that point (places are rarely quiet because they're bad, after all) so we booked in for Saturday instead and toddled off to the other pub for the evening. When we arrived the next day, they didn't seat us for a while, then didn't take our order for a good half an hour (we didn't have drinks either). There were only two duck dishes left so the waitress had to check I could have that like I'd asked. I didn't want to point out that there'd been more choice if anyone had served us. She didn't ask how I wanted my duck until she came back, and she didn't seem to know what sides came with each dish. As it was, the sides of dauphinoise potato and green beans were very tasty. Starters sounded great. As we were by the sea, we had to have scallops, right? But mine were a little sandy, and the waitress looked shocked when I told her. Not wonderfully thrilled. But here's the thing: The main courses were excellent. Really really excellent. And the pub is lovely. Cosy, noisy, happy. Everything you want from a country pub. It occurs to me that they're so busy because they have massively useless serving staff. And too many of them as well so no one really knows what's going on. I don't think my experience was a four star one. My meal (and wine) was. But I like the pub too much to rate them three stars. Still, they need some better serving staff here, because that's really letting down the excellent food.

A hidden gem afloat in the river Exe, Devon…read more Tip number one - Book! Tip number two - if you don't own a boat then you must book a water taxi from Exmouth and this costs £5 per person return. Tip number three - get there early. On a busy day the daily specials as well as the regular menu can sell out. This is understandable for a restaurant in the middle of a river because food is delivered daily and once it's gone, it's gone. The premises have limited space for food storage, again, because of the nature of the location. Our trip to the restaurant didn't exactly go to plan but the staff - Harry and the team - really looked after us. We arrived at 7:30 and all but one of the specials had already sold out as had some of the main menu. We were not bothered as we had both come for the Mussels (Moules Mariniere).. We also ordered starters. Time went by and the people who came over with us on the water taxi (separately) received their meals and tucked in. We waited a bit longer and then a waiter came over and said that they had pretty much ran out of food and we could not have our mains after all. He apologised profusely and said we would not have to pay for any of our drinks or starters (which hadn't yet arrived). The reasons given were, well, read tip 3 again! Our starters then arrived.. I had Crab and Crevett Crayfish and my girlfriend had smoked salmon, and they were great. We then started thinking about leaving when Harry (manager?) came over with a plate of complimentary oysters, more drinks and offered complimentary deserts, coffee and wine too... I had a fabulous cheese board. The staff handled the situation fantastically and we booked in there & then to go back next week to try again. Harry then said we'd have a free bottle of wine too as a further gesture of goodwill. The food we had was excellent. The service was ridiculously good. The food and drinks we had came to £60 anyway and to be honest we had plenty without the mains even coming out. Great little place. Fab service. Good food. Great ambiance on a lovely summers evening. Most of all it's something a little different.
