I've supported the Spokane Humane Society for years. Ever since that day when we fostered four puppies that were abandoned on the side of the road. Our experience with the organization has always been friendly and professional. They were very concerned about the safety of the puppies and, as we had been volunteers with them, they allowed us to foster for longer than four weeks to help the puppies trust people again. From that time on, we have fostered on and off for more than 12 years at least. I'm so grateful for this organization and how they care for the animals that Somehow end up at the Humane Society through no fault of their own. read more

I'm looking at the lower end of reviews for SHS. I can tell you from someone who, until, yesterday fostered cats with them. I think that the potential for them to be good is lost in internecine battles. I was let loose as a foster which means that I was on the losing end. I fostered from August of 2025 until now, January 2026. I don't know why - I got a phone call on a shoddy cell from 'Kim' and I was expecting it. I *think* I'm going to be adopting a cat with colon cancer. But, I asked too many questions. What i experienced with SHS was this: The charity extends. And then it doesn't. I fostered a high maintenance cat. I'm still not sure if we'll see him again or not. But, according to the call from Kim (that I couldn't hear very well), this is all about some 'lab tests.' As a foster, I am giving my time, my love and my patience. If that's not appreciated, I'm glad that my SHS account page is no longer there. My major concern is for this cat. I have no idea if we'll see him again and, well, I think we need that cat, 'Zoe' but we call him 'Simon.' again. Hey, it's what it is. If SHS faults me, I've got tons of emails and texts that prove otherwise. But, right now, I am really wondering about Simon. So, my star value for Spokane Humane Society is based on one thing - it's about the animals. My experience indicates that this is NOT about the animals with SHS but they can always hire posters to refute me. So, you guys get a 1 from me. I had an incredibly disappointing experience here. I came in genuinely needing help, but was met with hostility instead. The woman who assisted me was cold, aggressive, and visibly unwelcoming--arms crossed, harsh tone, and an attitude that made it clear I was being judged rather than helped. There was absolutely no compassion or understanding. It was demeaning and disheartening, especially in a place that's supposed to care about both people and animals. I left feeling worse than when I arrived. She stated to be the manager. read more

I am a volunteer at Spokane Humane Society and went there for the first time to get trained today! :-) This place is located a little out of the way (north east of Spokane) and the roads on the way are so bad.... so much cracks :/ but I understand that for them to have a place to walk dogs, they need a big, isolated place. Jen who was the trainer was really sweet and awesome. I could tell she really does care about animals and showed compassion. Other staff members are also nice and easily approachable. I only got trained for cats (sadly not dogs yet :( ) so I only got to checked out cats they had. All the cats were really sweet but a little shy and I got to play with them for an hour! It seriously makes me want to adopt a cat...!! Kitties cost about $75 to adopt and adult cats are $25 (sometimes fees waived too). Staffs were very organized and segregated cats into different rooms depending on if they are sick, has ringworm, not so friendly, friendly. They also have a nice little retail section for cat and dogs goodies. The building was pretty big and clean. You should definitely come check out this place! These animals are all sweet and loving and they would like to find a new place they would call home! read more

It is sometimes a little hard to get help but they have very knowledgeable people. A big problem is that their animal listings online are not very honest. They won't list things like "bad with small animals" "don't like kids" and things like that. They will tell you in person but if you see an animal you want online, don't expect to be able to get it because of hidden issues. Their website is also slow, buggy, and clunky. We came for a specific dog because as the website listed him he would be perfect. Turns out he would be a danger to my grandchildren. I don't remember his name, but there was a young man that asked a few questions about my home and lifestyle and brought out the perfect dog for me. We had all day to hang out and get to know each other. He is exactly how he described with no real surprises. They said no small animals should be around him and I thought he was skittish. He gets really upset seeing rabbits and cats on our walk. That is more my fault for not completely understanding, but they made sure that I do not have any small dogs, cats, etc before allowing me to take him home. Yes, they ask if you are sure. Not because they don't want you to adopt, but want to make sure it is a good situation for everyone. Even then, my poor doggy has stayed there at least twice. :( So many people who work/volunteer here were sad to see him go and a few weeks later we returned to buy a few things to support them and ask some questions and many came out to say hi to him, they remembered him! I have been in shelters where the people barely care(*cough* SCRAPS), these guys do care. A lot. "Adoption" fees(they should be honest, you are purchasing an animal) are very high for what you get. They don't even make sure the dogs have full shots for that $200+ fee. They don't have an accurate listing of vets that will check out your animal. Most vets are full up anyway. They have a clinic there but apparently, they only accept low-income folks which is partly great. People need access to animal care at reasonable costs. My dog needs a rabies shot, which they failed to do pre-adoption and I can't get him in anywhere but since I am fortunate enough to not be on public assistance, I can't get him needed care there. I could even pay double the normal cost of an exam and vaccine to help out the shelter, but it seems I can not even do that. The quality of the kennels is not horrifying, but they are not great either. If I could afford it, I would give them a huge grant to not only upgrade but also build another shelter in a more convenient area. read more

I took my cat in for his regular vaccination for rabies last month. The attendant who came out and took my cat inside wasn't the kindest person in the world. She didn't really have to be as she was just ferrying Loki in from my vehicle. She came out a couple minutes later telling me that they could not give him his vaccination do to a major issue with him. She then asked me for the fee for the $10 vaccination. What?! Why? If you are not going to do it then why are you charging me? I get that it is a non-profit and they need to fund their facility. But really? Makes me wonder if she just pocketed the cash?! She told me that the doctors would be out to explain what was going on. The doctors are wonderful, professional, kind, and explained what was going on and what they needed to do and what the end result was going to be. They gave me a couple of options and suggested that I make an appointment with his regular doctor after the visit with them to follow up. I did that & I then paid $140 for the procedure that made him more comfortable in his end of life. I didn't have an issue with the $140, but telling me demanding the 10 for something that he was not going to need was more than odd. In addition they are extremely hard to impossible to get a hold of as every time you call it goes straight to voice mail. No one returns your calls. Even though their prices are more than reasonable, their staff, below the doctor level, are horrible, rude, disrespectful and undesirable. Is it worth taking your furry companions there for their vaccinations? Yes. Will you have to put up with rude & disrespectful people in time that are painful or just on a regular day? Yes. Do you have to? No. There are other place that will charge more but are more professional and less rude and disrespectful. Spokane Humane Society has major issue with their staff that needs to be addressed and might not be the best choice when it comes to your pets well being. read more

We had an amazing experience at the Humane Society adopting a cat last week. We weren't looking for anything too specific so they helped us look in all the cat rooms and were very honest in answering questions, and knowledgeable about the pets. Donna especially knew the cats really well. Kourtney walked us through our adoption and the process was so easy, and the medical records/etc. you leave with are comforting to have. They took great care of this cat and she is absolutely blossoming now that she is in her forever home! Oh, and Kourtney made sure to look for someone who knew our cat to help get her in the carrier - we adopted a little kitty who was pretty spooked, so everyone's understanding of her temperament really helped make the process as painless as possible for her. Great experience overall and will be highly recommending adopting here to anyone who asks!!! read more

The people that work and volunteer here are just amazing. They are a compassionate bunch whether picking a new best friend or bringing in one that has passed. I've seen both handled here and they are just great people. Adoption fees do keep going up but you are paying for all of the effort and costs that go into supporting these animals that are not cheap to take care of. It is worth every penny when you think about it. Anyway, a great place to find an addition to your family and so much better than supporting a puppy mill. I absolutely love this place. I adopted my sweet cat Pesstie here, she's almost 11 and partially blind. She has been my best friend since. Pesstie was the pet of the week so I was given a gift basket full of food, treats, toys, brushes, a collar, and food trays. As well as a free ID tag. They made everything extremely easy, I had every single document for my cat I needed to have her licensed and registered as an ESA. I highly highly recommend this place - they gifted me with my best friend and I am so grateful for the work they do here. read more

I adopted my GSD from here in 2016. The staff was very friendly, the animals all seemed clean and healthy as well. Good bunch of people!

The ONLY reason I haven't given this place 1 star is because it was easy to set up my dog's appointment for her spay and got good reminder texts. Other than that, I recommend going to another vet clinic for spay/neuter procedures, even if it is an extra $25 or so. Not only did they say my pup weighed over 25 pounds to get the extra fee, (she has three legs, and she weighed 22 at her normal vet a week later) but they also said she was in heat for another extra fee, and that it had just started so there was no way of knowing externally and she hadn't started bleeding, giving me no way to disputed that. Along with this, I am 2 months post op with my dog and now have to take her back to the vet again, because her incision sight wasn't done properly and is swollen and discolored. read more

I love this place! The staff is SUPER sweet and caring. The vets are very knowledgeable and tell you exactly what to do with you're new fur child. They gave me suggestions of brands of food for my new pup as she can't have any grains or chicken. Its been a year since I got my cats from the Spokane Humane Society but I was inspired to wrote a review recently after a conversation woth a customer who experienced similar problems to mine but not as extreme. To start out, most of the staff is quite kind and lovely and helpful but my roommate and I dealt with a young lady in particular who treated us oddly. We never really knew why but it irked us enough to not take the free check up and take our cats elsewhere. She kept asking if "we were sure" we wanted the cat we chose and other weirdly phrased questions that made it seem like she was reluctant to help us. Second issue was the fact that one cat we chose (known formerly as Memphis) was drooling and sick when we came to pick him up the first time because the staff apparently left a bag of undisclosed weeds in a bag in the designated cat area. I do not know what they were thinking honestly but it was negligent and they couldn't even tell me what was in the bag. He recovered thankfully and is fine. Third issue arouse with our second cat (formerly known as Bobby Joe). Whe minor, no one seemed to be able to correctly identify her gender. The employees said female and the vet said male but we are still unsure because the paperwork seemed incorrect in places. We stull aren't 100% sure but we've been told she's a female more than male. They have lots of great animals that need loving homes but just be careful when dealing with certain staff members. My cats are great and healthier than they were when we got them! read more

Lots of animals always up for adoption here! The SHS also works with a lot of rescues in order to find homes for all the furry creatures. That is their top priority. In the main building you will find the front desk and a cat room to check out all the cats as they play, sleep, hide from you, stalk you from the behind the mirror, and all other crazy things cats do. Kennel 1 is where the adoptable dogs are kept and you can ask one of the staff members to take it out for a walk. You can also schedule a meet and greet to see if your potential family addition will get along with the rest of the clan. There are three play pens outside and a ton of space to take the four-legged furballs for a walk. Puppies and kittens go fast, which is pretty standard. Everyone at SHS works really hard to keep the place running and they are very passionate about what they do. read more

My husband and I took our 3 dogs and my aunt's dog to get their vaccinations. We got there and vaccinations were canceled due to a gas leak. I'm giving them 5 stars because they understood that driving across town with 4 dogs is a chore. They gave us the paperwork and took 50% off of everything for each dog for the inconvenience. They do get busy but you don't wait for hours and they treat the dogs very well. I'd recommend them. They are the least expensive I've found. read more

Came here on a weekday to visit the dogs. I believe most of them are up for adoption, and some of them may even been up for foster care. It's pretty well maintained. Each dog gets a moderate sized cage & outdoor/backyard sorta area to themselves. You also have the opportunity to walk the dogs if you so choose. read more

I took my dog in two weeks ago to get spayed. It was $75 to have her fixed and take medicine home for afterwards, while the vet was going to charge me $500+. The receptionist was very nice and helpful. I dropped off at 8:30 and picked up at 2:30. The doctor was very friendly as well and explained very thoroughly how my dogs procedure went (everything went smoothly) and when to give her the medicine and what signs I need to look out for in case she wasn't healing properly. I would definitely bring another animal here for a spay/neuter surgery. read more

Last week we adopted a dog from this shelter that we absolutely loved. We brought our other dog to do a meet and greet with her before bringing her home and they got along great so we proceeded with the adoption. After 48 hours of this dog being in our home she tried to violently attack our dog multiple times completely unprovoked, so we sadly came to the agreement that she was not right for our home. We were very distraught about the situation and felt horrible bringing her back, but it was not safe for our other dog. Upon bringing the dog back to the shelter I was met with a very un-compassionate staff who seemed completely unbothered by my concern about the dogs behavior. I explained to them that I would never hold it against the animal for being aggressive because I know its not their fault, but we felt misled and uninformed about the level of her aggression, especially considering that she was such a big dog. I explained the situation to the girls at the front desk and they acted like I was just some uneducated/irresponsible dog owner returning her because she was too much work. It wasn't until my boyfriend went back and spoke to an actual trainer that we finally found someone who genuinely cared, she also informed us of information about the dog that the girls at the desk failed to inform us about before we adopted her. Overall it was a very traumatic experience all around for us, our dog, and the poor animal that thought she had found her forever home. I just hope that when they repost her for adoption they accurately inform her new owner of her needs. read more

I adopted my 10+ yr. old dog from the HS, she had been given surgery for mammary cancer, and she had a pile of papers regarding her medical problems, including arthritis and cataracts. They gave her a chance and she has been a terrific dog for us. Most places would have euthanized her right up front. Margo is the second dog I have adopted here.
