Splendiforous is right! Driving up the coast of Maine, craving an ice cream for hours, when this place appeared like magic with its colorful, attention-getting flags and white rabbit out front. The ice cream was great, and the service was super friendly, but the decor was truly magical. This sweet shop occupies an old bank building, complete with an old vault, and it's decorated in an Alice in Wonderland theme, which is dear to my heart. Check out the pictures, and stop here for sure if you have the opportunity.

I'm not one to usually to go to a sweet shop or anything along those lines, but walking around in downtown Belfast this past weekend and seeing a cutout of the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland outside the entrance intrigued us! I had no idea what we'd be in for! There was a sweet woman dressed up as the Queen of Hearts who warmly greeted us. We peeked around for a few minutes but then she really gave us the tour. I don't want to spoil it for anyone else who may wander in, but take the time to let her show you all the fun, hidden surprises and make sure to get your picture taken at the "Mad Hatter Tea Table"! Although we didn't buy anything (really just not sweets fans here) it was the highlight of our afternoon and if we ever find ourselves in that area again, I'd pop in just to say hi! They've only been open for a few weeks so go on in and see what they have inside!

Bixby Chocolate was an expected find when we were in Rockland for a cruise stop. Located off the…read morebeaten path, Bixby isn't a place you're going to stumble upon, but when you do you'll love it. The entry is located toward the back of a large brick building. You may think you're going too far, but keep going. There is a sign above the doorway and a sandwich board to help get you there. As you get near the place the smell of chocolate fills the air. Once inside the door it's like you're surrounded by a big chocolate hug. Inside the door there are a number of shelves on your right with pre-packaged Bixby products, ready for purchase. Chocolates and bonbons and toffees of various flavors and varieties, as well as peanut brittles in a surprising number of flavors. Further into the establishment you're presented with displays of various items for sale. It's not just a retail store, but it's also the Bixby Chocolate factory, where their confectionary delights come to life. The day of our visit there was no activity other than retails sales. After a couple samples I came home with a large bag of chili beer peanut brittle. I know it sounds complicated, but it is AWESOME. The staff at Bixby knows their product. Got a question? Any staff member can assist with any of your questions. Need to purchase something and have it shipped? No problem at all! They ship anywhere! Bixby is a destination, to be sure, but it's well worth the effort to find it.

The light and airy shop showcases the variety of their products, particularly their signature bonbons and Needhams (potato chocolates!). The chocolate is very high quality with a lot of flavor choices. Make sure to try some local flavor profiles like blueberry and maple. They also have ice cream in the shop! We'd just eaten so we had to miss that, but stocked up on chocolates, including a bag of Needhams, Allagash beer brittle, a dark chocolate sea salt bar, and four bon bons. Bixby does a beautiful job crafting the chocolates. The bonbons were truly pieces of art, and the chocolate bar had such a lovely and intricate sea life pattern on it that I almost didn't want to eat them. Our one wish was that they had more samples available, particularly for the unfamiliar flavors like the beer brittle and the Needhams, so folks know what they're getting before investing in a large bag of something. The factory and shop is right on Crockett Point in Rockland Harbor and is a gorgeous way to spend some time in Maine.

We ordered ahead online and everything was already waiting for us when we arrived. Was perfect considering the beautiful weather and how busy they were. It had a rustic feel overall with lots of seating both inside and out. They have a little free library as well. My wife and I each got a create your own breakfast sandwich. I appreciated the amount of options they had including even two sausage patties. I ended up going with a croissant double sausage patties, pepper jack cheese and tomatoes. My wife got a bagel sausage egg and cheese with spinach. Good sized and value for the price. Although, speaking of prices I did have a local family member tell me they raise prices during busy tourist season. Drink wise I got their signature. Choco-latte and my wife got their honey lavender latte seasonal special. Both were well made and full of flavor. Would definitely frequently come here if I were nearby for a morning coffee! Due to ordering online I can't speak to the service fully but we did not have any issues with our food and drink and it was made quickly! Check them out if you want coffee or a breakfast sandwich. Will need to return to try their lunch tacos!

The coffee and bagels are also great. We tried the choco-latte, Maine maple, cafe de Oma, and pumpkin spice latte and enjoyed each one! Cons: sometimes friendly service, sometimes not so friendly service The maple oat latte was extremely sweet, much sweeter than the other drinks that we tried

I love the name of this shop! The owners guessed the words to my secret mantra. I was happy to…read morelearn that a gourmet cheese store had recently arrived to this corner of Maine. Located around the corner from the main drag it's easy to find because of the eye catching chalkboard signs we saw on the sidewalk which point the way for you. There was an initial big disappointment here which turned out to be the first thing you are confronted with at the entrance and that is the metal spiral staircase that one must climb in order to enter. There is no other way in that I could see. Never mind how treacherous this could be on an icy winter day, the real tragedy here is that this means access is barred to those with certain disabilities, anyone in a wheelchair, a parent with a stroller, a frail elder and others that may have trouble navigating such a wretched means of entry. Once safely inside the space it's small but quite inviting and pleasantly decorated. The bounty is contained in one large glass-fronted refrigerated case and it's delightfully packed with cheeses from places near and far. The friendly man working there who I believe was the owner, told us to just let him know whatever it was we wanted to sample. Say no more! Already displayed were a few plates of already cut up cheese samples from which I took a number of nibbles. I love when shops do this although for hygiene sake I would have loved some toothpicks to spear the cheese rather than have everyone use fingers. I decided on the cutely named Ewephoria which is a sheep's milk cheese (get it?) from Holland. It's a hard cheese that was nutty and buttery. We loved it, so I'll be on the look out for it again. There were some artisinal salamis for sale as well that intrigued my husband. From trips to Tuscany where boar is king, he has become especially fond of this kind of meat. He bought some of the smoked boar sausage that he said was delicious. The shop also sells a small but decent selection of wines and some gourmet crackers. We wished they sold some fresh crusty baguettes which would have made this one stop shopping for the perfect picnic fare. There is nothing about what they are selling and how they are selling it inside the shop that I have any trouble with. It's great. What I hope is that the owners who have come up with a great idea for this town, will figure out a way to address the need for access to all. And from the owner's point of view, they should be thinking about all the customers who they are missing because they can't get in. I don't know how the appropriate changes can be done at this exact location unless there was a secret elevator or entrance I missed. But if not, there have got to be other available storefronts somewhere in Belfast in which to set up shop. Hello, calling Belfast realtors... This is dedicated to Michele R. whose reviews always take accessibility into consideration and from whom I've learned much about this issue. Her well articulated reviews have helped me to be more mindful about this kind of equality.
