On my exploration of Oxen cuisine, I came across La Popular so my group and I checked it out. There…read morewas no wait and we were able to be seated right away. It is quite cozy inside with dim lighting to make it more ambient. When it was time to order the waitress came and was really friendly to all of the members from our large group. I was quite hungry so I ordered an aqua Fresca, a tostada, and a torta. I ordered an Agua Fresca de Pepino con Limon and it was so refreshing and delicious. However, I did order it without ice since I find that drinks are usually already cold as is and don't need ice, this was a mistake. The flavor was spot on, however it was room temperature, which could have been avoided if I did add ice. The torta that I ordered was of chorizo. There were plenty of toppings and the bread was really nice and fluffy. The chorizo was was actually very oily which did take away from the flavor and made the inside quite mushy and soggy. If you do order a torta, I would suggest getting a different protein than chorizo. I also ordered a tostada de pulpo. I was very thrown off as the seafood and the octopus in it were slightly warm. To my understanding, seafood should be refrigerated and kept cool so it does not go bad so I was slightly concerned as it felt like it had been sitting outside for a while. The flavor was not great either, quite bland like there were no seasonings or preparation from the octopus or the rest of the toppings.

We had gone in and sat ourselves. Only then did they came by with menus. Most of the drinks were tasty! I personally loved their thai inspired cocktail with basil lit up to create a nice aroma. I thought it was funny when I got the menu and the food menu was only one page while the drink menu was five pages. The outside of the restaurant is blue-ish and the restaurant has multiple rooms. The ceviche del dia ($190 MXN) was a little sweet and not as tart or sour as others I've had. The tacos de sirloin ($170) were really good and were our group's favorite. The taquitos dorados de mole negro ($140) were okay; there was no meat just in case you were wondering. The aguachile rojo de camaron ($190) were good. The esquite con tuetano ($100) was not like a typical corn in a cup but it was closer to a corn soup. For drinks I had the pequeño gigante ($210) which was good. The paloma madura and paloma margarita were both favorites among our group. We went during the day and it wasn't that busy but supposedly it gets way busier and livelier at night.

We were able to get a seat right away and the servers were super helpful. My friend wanted to try some mezcal and they let us taste a couple before choosing. We sat at the restaurant instead of the bar because it was cuter and I wanted food too. I tried two of their fruity mezcal drinks and loved both. I forget the names but one had watermelon, and the other had coconut and lime. I ordered cheese stuffed plantains with mole and this was soooo good. It was very filling too!

During various trips…read moreto Oaxaca I have let 5 folks take a bite of my burger and they all immediately ordered their own...sometimes two!! You can get your burger with several toppings but the best is "con todo". It includes the patty, a slice of cheap ass Fudd ham grilled, American cheese or Oaxacan quesillo, lettuce, tomato, grilled or fresh onion', some pickled jalapeños, a few chunks of pineapple, Mexican Mayo and a little mustard. The hotdogs aren't that great but they have them. Mario's usually shows up after 5 or 6 near the Zocalo but they may move around. After 10 pm the line gets long with all the drunk folks needing something to soak up all that mezcal or beer. But don't worry because the cook has his technique down. They were only 35 pesos but worth twice that!!!

You got regular hot dog buns, but with gooey and toasted cheese and topped with bacon , Pico de Gallo, ketchup, mayo, mustard and *chapulines*. I had to try these and it was amazing!!! They also top the hot dogs with chicharrón for more crunchiness. The hamburgers have fresh grilled pineapple with a meat patty topped with ham and cheese, and you can also top with tomato, lettuce and salsa. We visited this stand several times on our Oaxacan vacation and I must say I think I am addicted and will miss it!

It's a relatively large restaurant and they were able to seat me immediately which was great as I was starving upon arrival. The decor is simple but nice. It's definitely less flashy than similarly priced restaurants in the area, which wasn't an issue for me but take that as you will (ie not sure it's the best for a romantic date night). I ordered the tortilla soup which I didn't love, but it could just be a matter of personal preference. The avocado in it wasn't quite ripe enough. The pork tacos, however, were absolutely fantastic and it was a very generously sized portion. I loved the accoutrements it came with like the salsa and pickled onions. For a drink I ordered the chapulin cocktail mostly because I wanted to try chapulines, which I actually enjoyed more than I was expecting, but the drink itself was unexciting and didn't taste very boozy at all. Overall I would come back for the tacos and try some other menu items too, but I would skip the soup and cocktail next time.
