I was hot, tired and hungry as hell. Hierba Dulce was such a lifesaver and a beautiful welcome to this amazing city. I visited three times while I was in town and the courtyard is simply glorious with a mural of the Virgin of Guadalupe looking over you. Service is patient and kind (our Spanish wasn't great and not every waitress speaks English). You won't believe the prices are for full meals and not tiny plates (Welcome to Oaxaca! New York, you are dead to me. Sort of.) so you may initially over-order like we all did. We ordered guac and nopales and tacos and the traditional mole but by the time the mole arrived (it's 6 bowls of the most incredible mole you've ever had, vegan or not), we had to force ourselves to eat more. (side note: we didn't have to really force ourselves at all). Standouts: -frozen drinks (the mango colada with or without alcohol!) -mango sorbet (sensing a theme here?) -potato tacos -guacamole The fact that we were compelled to return three days in a row should tell you all that you need to know. We were too late for lunch and too early for dinner, so we pretty well had the place to ourselves, but we had a wonderful casual meal and the staff was helpful and attentive. We had the tacos in my pic - the purple tortillas are made with sweet potatoes and filled with quesilla and mushrooms, the yellow are made with plantains and are stuffed with squash blossoms and squash (calabacitas). Both were excellent, and they brought a complimentary flan to my mother celebrating a special birthday. Very enjoyable meal.
