This is the only place I eat at when I come to Southgate and I love it. As an avid poke lover this…read moreplace is it. Great combo bowls. Wish they had a location on the Northside too! Really cute Hawaiian vibe. Prices are on the more pricier side $16-18. Knocking a star off for customer service. There's lots of times I come here and there's no one in the front of the store or a bell to ring to get someone's attention.

I was browsing for a quick healthy lunch option at the Southgate mall food court when this Hula…read morePoke stall caught my eye. The signage stood out from the loud neon lights in the neighboring stalls and beckoned me in a non-flashy way. They were located in the middle of a bunch of fast food chain stalls which had quite the line up. On the contrary these guys didn't look that busy. I had my apprehension due to the lack of patronage, however the drive to eat a healthy meal brought on by my growing mid-section forced me towards their counter. They had a good selection of poke bowls mostly featuring raw fish. I didn't want to be part of an experiment involving my immunity and hence ordered a grilled salmon poke bowl from the menu. The food came out quick. It looked great and tasted even better. I wasn't super hungry and hence the serving size was just right. Although the this wouldn't have been enough if I was having one of my starving episodes. The proportion of veggies/salmon to rice was less than desirable but I guess we have to blame it on the inflation and the rising food prices. I might go there again to try out some of their other offerings and mainly to avoid the other fast food outlets in that area.

I tried Splash Poke earlier this work week while on my lunch time walk and though it was A-OK…read more I went with the staff member's recommendation and got The Works for $14.95. I opted to have the salmon and tuna chopped sashimi on a bed greens and had all the toppings included minus the green onions. While I love the idea and LOVE love LOVE poke bowls back home in Seattle or in coastal areas, I just wasn't blown away here. Don't get me wrong - the fish was fresh and the atmosphere bright and clean. But the flavours felt like a jumble. The offerings on the menu didn't really feel like carefully crafted flavours. "The Works" included mango, canned pineapple, and canned corn. Say what? Yeah, it was just an odd combination. I liked the aioli sauces and the nori and sesame seed toppings but I really think this could go from A-Okay to A-mazing if the sauces and toppings felt more crafted. Also $14.95 for maybe two ounces of sashimi feels steep. I'd rather hit up a local sushi bar and order sashimi and a side for the same price but get more fish. If you've never had poke, certainly come and give Splash Poke a try but if you LOVE poke bowls from coastal towns, you might feel like I do. Poke on people, poke on!

I've ordered a few times this year (Covid-19) for take-out…read more Being celiac I always order "the friendly" bowl on brown rice. I phone ahead so it is ready for me when I swing by. There is some parking on the street, a loading zone in front of the building to the south of the store, but during normal traffic, non-covid days, it's usually packed and there is no parking on 109 St. It's a bowl I eat all of... usually in one sitting. It's good, but it's not Maui poke. There's just a little zing missing in the sauce. I can't put my finger on it exactly. Fish is usually fresh, and there's enough in a serving. Price... understandable for a stand-alone shop downtown. Staff wears masks, sanitizer is provided. They don't accept cash payment - card only , but I always feel a bit guilty about the tip bowl, I don't have any coins (which can be sanitized), and tap to pay doesn't have an option. It's a nice quick meal on the go.

An impromptu dinner with O meant we finally got to try Sushi Yuzen. We went a month earlier but…read morewere closed the day we went. The entrance is a bit hidden from view; just look for the sign. They also own Menya Yuzen (which specializes in ramen). We dropped in on a Sunday evening (around 7:45pm). The inside is dinky with only three tables to fit 8 people total. Crazy small. Most people do takeout. Service was friendly and attentive. The menu is in a cute booklet; appetizers, sashimi, nigiri, aburi sushi, sushi combo, rice bowl, uramaki, chumaki/futomaki, hosomaki/cone, sushi burritos and combo options. - Miso soup ($2.50) - O got a small bowl to start. She said it was salty but good. - Tamago nigiri ($2.00) - tamago is always my benchmark on whether a place will have good nigiri. SY's was great. Great texture and slight sweetness to the egg. - Chop chop hosomaki ($4.25) - this was my favourite of the two hosomaki's. Really fresh, melt in your mouth. - Spicy tuna hosomaki ($4.25) - the spice is flavourful and nicely balanced. Good but small portions. - Inari nigiri ($2.00) - bean curd. The skin had a sweet, chewy texture. Basically, tofu wrapped around a ball of rice. - 2x Aburi salmon nigiri ($2.25) - I can only think of a few places in town that do aburi style sushi. These were nicely seared and melt in your mouth. - Salmon sashimi ($10.00 for 5) - fresh, good quality and reasonably sized pieces of salmon. Can't really ask for anything more. Good quality but pricey.

It only seats 8 people, but this tiny sushi shop is awesome!! Take out or sit in, it's all good!…read moreFrom the same family that had the ramen shop, Sushi Yuzen focuses only on a small menu with no hot food. The sashimi is faaaaaabulous. The hosomaki (small rolls) are appropriately priced between $4 and $5 per 6 piece roll, but don't let the small price fool you - it's delicious and with a decent amount of filling and not just rice. Our favourite was the Aburi BC roll - at $10.50 it was one of the pricier options on the menu, but this roll would easily run you $15+ at any of the Edmonton sushi joints. Service is super friendly and the food is delicious/fresh without breaking the bank. What more do you want in life??
