In light of poor wired ADSL copper service now offered by a major service provider, no long term fiber outside plant deployment programs in Alta Sierra Ranches by the County of Nevada, my discussion was very timely, productive and encouraging with SmarterBroadband. We also discussed 5G announcements by major service providers and "reality of lack of any near term timely deployment" since rural Grass Valley is not a high-density metro area. SmarterBroadband provides reliable broadband service and is interested in your Business. When you call them, tell them where you live (Grass Valley Residential Area-especially Alta Sierra or Alta Sierra Ranch) and what you have been experiencing in reliable/unreliable broadband service at your existing "contracted" speed (throughput).

After comparing my current internet service to other available options, I'm even more disappointed…read morewith what we've been paying for. For awhile, SBB was great!! And then Starlink came around. And then became available in the Nevada County area.... Obviously SBB cannot beat Starlink, but you'd think they would atleast try to be a little competitive to retain customers... We now currently pay around $130/month after router fees for internet advertised at only 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload. Despite that, the service barely functions reliably for normal household use. Netflix buffers even on data-saving mode. School assignments and online tests take forever to load. My toddler's speech and learning apps frequently freeze or fail to load entirely. Many times I end up disconnecting from Wi-Fi and using cellular data instead because it performs better. What makes this worse is that they claimed we were somehow using 1,500-2,000 GB of data monthly while simultaneously providing internet too slow to consistently stream a movie without buffering. We checked everything ourselves: reduced streaming quality, monitored connected devices, tested usage with almost nothing on the network, and still experienced extremely poor performance. Instead of addressing the actual service problems, they repeatedly contacted us about "excessive usage" and then automatically moved us to this... service... (lol) which is what they call an "unlimited" plan which is ironic considering the plan can barely support basic streaming, my college coursework, or children's learning apps without buffering and interruptions. After looking into alternatives (STARLINK!!) it's honestly shocking how far behind this service is. Starlink is offering 200-400+ Mbps speeds, unlimited data, modern equipment, and dramatically better performance for $10 less than the new monthly price we're already paying for SBB. Starlink is even offering a promotional $99/month rate for the first three months while providing vastly faster speeds and better equipment. There IS a one time equipment fee of $349, but that's it. No monthly equipment charge. Paying premium pricing for internet that struggles to load homework assignments, online tests, Netflix on data-saving mode, or a toddler's speech-learning app is unacceptable. I cannot recommend this provider to anyone who depends on atleast decent, reliable internet for school, streaming, or any other basic everyday usage... I cannot imagine trying to work from home with this internet...

I ordered Spiral Fusion in Orangevale because I had bad experiences with Pacbell, SBC, AT&T and…read moreComcast over the years since 1989. Read my lips: I'm just not gonna take it anymore. Spiral Internet came to my attention when I read about Sonic's Fiber To The Home (FTTH) in other markets (Santa Rosa et al) and Spiral Internet was listed as a partner. They are based in Nevada City, but their product in my area is called Spiral Fusion: This is phone (POTS aka Plain Old Telephone Service) with all the modern features (e.g., caller ID and national long distance included) and unthrottled DSL internet access for about $40 + $11 in fees per month. While they offer FTTH in other markets, this is not fiber that I'm reviewing, but rather the Sprial Fusion phone+DSL product. Speed - I'm about 11,000 feet from the CO (Central Office), so I'm quite happy with a consistent 3 Mbps down and 0.85 Mbps up speed using DSL technology in a "fringe" area with a history of noisy on aerial lines. This is significantly better than AT&T over the same copper. The faster tiers of Comcast are faster than DSL in my area, but greatly oversold since they throttle you and provide the advertised speed as a "burst rate" which means your average bandwidth is seldom what you think you thought you paid for (I know people who have observed this using WireShark--a free and open-source packet analyzer). Sprial Fusion's internation calling rates are right off Sonic's website and very reasonable (e.g., France for 3.4 cents/minute)--better than Comcast's rate for it's captive international long distance. Unless you are downloading movies from Pirate's Bay (which IMHO is an illegal waste of time), the speed I'm getting is plenty fast enough and sufficient for using Netflix to your heart's desire. Service - Even if AT&T's DSL (not U-verse) were just as fast, I would take Spiral any day based on my experience so far. With AT&T, it always took three support calls before they would come out a fix a line problem (always saying that they remotely tested and it was fine). The forth time, it turned out to be a fried AT&T-branded DSL modem by Motorola that failed after less than a year (2nd one purchased) and they wanted to charge a $60 repair fee. AT&T knows that they put their logo on a piece-of-junk DSL modem, yet they wanted to charge me $60 (on top of me needing to buy a new DSL modem). If you doubt me, check out Amazon and read the customer reviews for "Motorola 2210-02 DSL Modem". All this after being a customer for years and after they jacked my rates over time while providing slower service than SBC. With Spiral, it's not a promo price--it's no credit check, pay-as-you-go, no games, no B.S--based on my experience dealing with them. They called me back and I got dial tone and DSL service with no problems. As intelligent consumers go with Spiral (or Sonic's other partners), I expect that there will be hold times and service issues as they scale up. It hasn't happened to me, but I won't be surprised if this happens. This would not be nearly as frustrating as getting the run around elsewhere where jerking you around is part of their business philosophy. All providers have service issues because that's a fact of life in the technology world--how they deal with it is what makes the difference. Customer cummunication and level of service are the two factors that I pay attention to. Either I'm dreaming or this is a parallel universe, but I don't anticipate getting jerked around by this company. Spiral relies on AT&T for copper to the home, so some sources suggest that AT&T may be less responsive on line repairs. My own experience dating back to the days of Covad / Pacbell are that this could happen, but persistence would prevail due to the legal issues and business relationships involved. Pricing - Based on what I've read about them, they give you--at no extra charge--the features that cost virtually nothing to provide and base their prices on a model that's factored upon the cost to provide the service. This means that they should always be competitive as they are now. They clearly have leadership with a sense of business ethics and they should be rewarded in the marketplace for not playing silly games with promo pricing and throttling your service.

UPDATE 2/21: Clearly Pamela's response to this review tells you all you need to know about avoiding…read moredoing business with her company. Instead of responding in a professional manner or offering some resolve to our situation, especially after numerous phone calls, texts, and emails, Pamela decides to take no responsibility or accountability. Simply, she could have responded and refunded us many months ago as promised eliminating the need for this negative review. She chose to ignore, lie and then blame us for her business decisions. She even goes so far as to make comments about distance to our property when we were in her service area at the time and that was never brought up as an issue prior to her taking our money for her services. If her company does not want to travel to certain areas then they should not be offering the service in those locations. For Pamela to say she's lost money on this experience, we can safely say that we've lost much, much more. Here's our abbreviated story. After canceling our prior internet service to All Starz on the "promise" of faster service and unlimited data we were stuck with 4G service that slowed to a crawl after two weeks. When I contacted Pamela, she said we used up our data on that card and needed to install a new card which she activated. Another week in and the service went down again. They swapped cards, readjusted the antenna and barely got a signal at all. We were told that a lot of customers' cards failed because the 3rd party they bought the cards from weren't supporting them anymore. That in itself seemed questionable but then they assured us they signed a new contract with another card supplier and all would be well. Weeks went by and all the while we had no internet and kept hearing promises of a "new service coming" which never did materialize. Eventually we discovered the problem was the data SIM cards they were passing off. My wife lost her online job as a result and I had spent hours and hours of my own time assisting with the service and researching the technology to try and update the antenna firmware. Yet, Pamela complains of losing money on us? My wife lost her entire income because she had no internet access not to mention the stress it put us through.  After avoiding our phone calls, we finally got Pamela to drop off a box of miscellaneous parts for us to try to see if we could get any signal on our own in our desperation for internet service. After that we had no support nor would they return any of our phone calls or texts. As many of you know, getting a new provider can take many months and so it took us another 45 days to schedule an install with Smarter Broadband leaving us without internet service for a total of over 3 months. We uninstalled all of the All Starz USA equipment, cleaned it up and repacked it in the original packaging per our agreement to be refunded. We could not get anyone to respond to our calls, texts or emails to pick up the equipment and issue a refund. (See attached photo - it's still safely here in the garage). And after doing some research I also discovered we spent way more than we should have for the installation charges. Not to mention she told us she would remove the payment for at least the last month of internet service (or should I say no service) and then discovered she charged us instead. We had to have our credit card company remove the charges since she ignored us when we inquired about the issue. So, who really lost money here?  After all of that we were very upset since we felt we had been scammed and that's when we asked for a full refund for all services. This Yelp review is the first response we have heard from Pamela and of course she tries to make us sound like the problem. We really thought we were dealing with professionals and tried our best to work with Pamela but had no idea they would treat their clients with such disrespect and lack of care. Let this be a warning to anyone considering using their services.
