Small Toronto gardens have given way to 20 acres of pleasure gardens which have been 19 years in the making. Tom and Susan opened SpindleTree Gardens to the public in 2006.
Meet the Business Owner: Tom Brown and Susan M.
Tom Brown, after 40 years as President of Thomas Brown Architects in Toronto, retired 13 years ago to work for "the perfect client" - himself! He has designed and built all the various gardens, including the black cedar Maze, the Bridge and Pavilion, and rescued and restored the historic 1860 Victorian Well Cover. In 2011, a 300 foot long brick and stone Allée lined with 18 black locust trees and bordered by 'rainbow' gardens was constructed. The completion of the 4500 sq. ft. Orangery/ Conservatory, the building of which started in 2011, is finally being completed this year as the focus of the Allée.
Susan Meisner was president of her own firm of publicity and promotion specialists in Toronto for over 22 years and has also managed to garden on a grand scale at SpindleTree since 2006. She operates the Garden Café on site where she is manager and chef during the garden's open season from May to October as well as stocking and operating the gift shop, opened in 2012.
