Mixed Bag at Spin and Margie's Our experience and Spin And Margie's Desert Hideaway was mixed. The property was nice, and just what we want in a desert getaway -- quiet, somewhat secluded, with enough space to feel private and enjoy a few days in Joshua Tree. That said, there were several things about our visit that were pretty frustrating and disapointing. The majority of the issues really boiled down to attention to detail and thinking through the guest experience. Maybe our experience was normal, or maybe it's just normal in the slow season (our trip was in late January and we were the only folks on the property for two of the nights). On the plus side, these issues should be easy for management to address with a little care and elbow grease; they're not inherent to the property itself. Our frustration started on our arrival at the property. There is no welcome desk, or staff of any kind, present at check-in -- which I don't mind at all. However, the parking area is essentially unlit and unmarked. For a first-time visitor, arriving after dark, figuring out where the main building is located, figuring out where to park, and finding your way to your room, is more challenging than you'd think. Adding a small map of the property, with the parking and route to rooms clearly marked, would have been really helpful -- and, I'm so glad I brought flashlights, as finding our room with just the light from my phone would have been even more of a pain. When we found our door, retrieved the key, and stepped inside, we were greeted to a similarly pitch-black, and freezing-cold room. All of the lights in the room were left unplugged, so the first step was to navigate with flashlights to the desk lamps, find the cords, and figure out where to plug them in. Perhaps in the off-season the lamps are left unplugged to save on electricity. One simple solve for this would be to have housekeeping visit the room when a guest is scheduled to visit, and plug in all the lamps. Even better, for guests scheduled to arrive late, would be leaving a single light on, since the rooms are otherwise so dark. The next frustration was the heat. Upon arrival, the vent in the ceiling was left open, so the room was about 40ºf when we arrived. There was a thermostat on the wall clearly labeled HEAT running to a gas heater. After about 10 minutes trying to light the pilot light, I realized that the gas line was completely disconnected -- the room is meant to be heated with a more newly installed electric air conditioner. Figuring out how to turn on that heater was, itself, more difficult than you'd think. Simple solves for these issues would be: have housekeeping close the ceiling vent and turn the heater to, say, 55º f on nights where guests are to arrive; changing the label on the old heater from "heat" to "disabled," and writing very clear directions on how to turn on the new heater for those cold nights in the desert winter. The cleanliness of the room was a mixed bag. We felt the bed linens were clean and not gross. The room was dusty, but it's a small private hotel in the middle of the desert, so that's perfectly understandable. But, the bathroom was a problem. There were spiderwebs and egg sacs in the shower, which was pretty off-putting. Though the sink was clean, the curtains above it were stained and gross. Overall, it felt like the room had been cleaned in a superficial way, but was sorely in need of a real deep cleaning. When I'm out in the desert, I'm not looking for the Ritz; but when I'm paying $180/night on top of a $78 cleaning fee, I would have liked more attention to detail. Continuing in the bathroom, the shower and sink were draining incredibly slowly. When the shower is running for even a few seconds, there's standing water, and after a minute or so your feet are completely submerged. I understand that the property is on a septic system, and clogs happen, but this went past annoying to making the shower almost unusable. Again, not looking for the Four Seasons experience, but after a long day of hiking through dusty and dirty Joshua Tree, to have the shower be so bad was a bummer. In sum, our experience at Spin and Margie's was a mixed bag. I've read the glowing reviews going back many years, and I believe all of them. I really liked the property overall, and for most of our time there we felt like we had the run of the place entirely to ourselves, which was great. But, I'm not sure I'll be returning for my next trip to Joshua Tree. So many of the issues we experienced really boiled down to details and care, but adding them up, it was death by many cuts. If the attention to detail was raised -- including on off-season weeks -- I'd be much more likely to return. read more

I know this place has great reviews, however, my experience happens to be the exception if you want to see it that way. I understand when things don't go as expected but what I'm not ok with is when you report them to ownership and they either ignore you or they dictate what your compensation is going to be. I walked-in to my room upon arrival, found urine stains, footprints and even a piece of used toilet paper on the floor in the bathroom. I also found urine stains on the rim of the toilet. Additionally, there were two windows with no curtains (other guests outside could see everything inside my room). I also found human hair inside a pillow and built-up dust under the bed. I reported these issues to the owner, her response the next day was to direct me to the lady in charge of the housekeeping saying "I will send CJ over in the morning so she can clean your room, you can describe your grievances to her..." Next morning CJ, a very nice lady, cleaned the room and installed new curtains. She explained that there were construction workers onsite and they had probably accessed the room after she had cleaned it. Does that sound fare to you as a customer? I contacted the owner again to thank her for cleaning the room and installing the curtains. I explained to her that the urine on the floor and the complete lack of privacy where two issues I was not comfortable with and that I didn't consider it would be fare to pay the full amount for the first night. The owner completely ignored me from that point on. It was not until I disputed the charges through my bank when I received an automated email from the owner's payment processing vendor with a $100 credit. No communication, no explanation from her. I guess she has been waiting for me to post my experience in social media to finally react. Does that sound fare to you as a customer? I don't understand owners who ignore customers and think they can dictate what your compensation should be. I asked the owner: "did you even know that the room had no curtains?" She never responded. Finding urine on the floor when you check in to a hotel is not disgusting enough for her? This is a nice spot but when you are ignored and not treated right, especially when you are paying more than $200 a night, it's not right. read more

WOW!! We got so lucky booking our stay at Spin & Margie's. We stayed in #5 a stand alone cottage with a nice private patio. We were so happy with the room. It was peaceful, clean, fun decor, a nice bathroom with a bathtub/shower, and a little coffee/kitchen area with an apt size refrigerator. Also provided was a small, yet exceptionally cool selection of diverse CD's and a handful of great DVD's. We enjoyed being there so much we bypassed TV watching and stuck with CD's enjoying the beautiful desert night air to great music. We have a luxury mattress at home and I thought the bed wasn't going to be great, but to my surprise I slept better there then I do at home. They got everything right in my book! This place is so charming - definitely an artist's oasis free of noise, light and electrical pollution! Another BIG plus is their LOVELY pool in a separate very well designed area flanked with pepper trees. We enjoyed the pool as we watched the sun go down. It was easy to check in, they have a lock-box system and send you the instructions hours before your stay. It took us a little bit to figure out exactly where it is as it's definitely a hidden treasure. When your GPS says you have arrived, you make a right onto the dirt road and it's your first right. If peaceful, artsy, boho is not your style, please stay away. More room for us! We will definitely go back. read more

This is a hidden gem in Joshua tree... I am 57 years old, and at least for my taste, I think this is the best value in town as a place to stay for a night or two or three. It has a homey feel... The units have small kitchens and extra beds. It is a peaceful retreat spot but still close to the highway and the national park. read more

We spent a few days here in 2009, and it was one of the most memorable places we stayed with the family, ever. The kids loved it. It's a small, desert spot that is impossible to categorize. Like having your own apartment, full of art, movies, books, nice furniture, and beautifully decorated in a funky desert style. Super comfortable and clean. Great beds, cute functional kitchen, large family room, superb fast internet. Cool public areas and a cute private patio. Close to the city of Joshua Tree and the park. I would live here. Seriously. I've been traveling 250 days per year for 20 years, and this is probably my favorite place to stay of all. It is exactly as I remember from almost 10 years ago, and I can't express how great that is. read more

A beautiful oasis in the desert! Super cute room, beautifully landscaped grounds, secluded, immaculately clean, and lots of beautiful tiles in the rooms and throughout the small compound. The decor is fun yet tasteful. I loved all the gorgeous photographs in my room. It's incredibly charming; not at all tacky or gaudy. You never can tell what you will find out in the desert and this little getaway is a true gem. You can tell lots of love goes into the care and upkeep of the place. Not much I need to add because the excellent reviews here on Yelp (as well as over on Trip Advisor) speak volumes about the quality of Spin and Margie's. Margie, who also goes by Mindy, came and greeted me shortly after my arrival. She's a delightful lady, very welcoming and so mindful of her guests' needs. I loved my stay here. A few notes to consider if you stay: --there is noise from the highway even though the motel is not located directly along the highway. It was like white noise to me but if you are sensitive to noise, take this into consideration. --no iron/ironing board in room but there is a blow dryer, extra towels, an extra blanket, portable heater and fly swatter (lol) in the closet. No bugs in the room though. Like I said, it is immaculate:) --no bureau drawers for clothes, at least not in my room. Not a big deal for me. Just placed my overnight bag on the luggage rack. --some rooms have private patios. For Rooms 1-4 there is a delightful shared courtyard with a patio table, lounge chairs and a small fountain. I saw a hummingbird taking a bath in the fountain one day:) --I believe only one room has a bathtub and the rest have showers. I really wanted the room with a bath so I could take a nice, leisurely soak but it wasn't available when I booked. Oh well, I'll grab it next time! Towels in bathroom are nice and thick btw:) --Walls are a little thin (could hear some murmuring once in a while) but luckily other guests were considerate. Anytime you share a wall with someone, you will get that anyway. There are two rooms that I believe are stand alone for optimal quiet and privacy. read more

This is a small establishment, 5 rooms, two of which are stand-alone, and have private patios for dining, hanging out, or stargazing. The room we stayed in was ample, comfortable, nicely decorated, and downright comfy. The bathroom and kitchen were very nicely decorated, and roomy. They provide utensils, and even some spices and cooking ingredients. There's also a nice gas bbq if you want to "grill out" and a fire pit area. There is wi-fi, a small flat-screen tv, and they have a great variety of DVDs and CDs if you want to watch TV or listen to music; there are also lots of great books about the Joshua Tree area, and they have fact sheets with info on local restaurants, etc. Somebody took time to do very nice tile work in the rooms, and the grounds have lots of places to hang out. There's also a lot of whimsical decoration, and the vibe is very relaxing. The swamp cooler and ceiling fan do a nice job of taming the desert heat, too. They're also cool people, who want to make sure your stay is enjoyable. On the other hand, though, the noise from the highway can become onerous, some of the outlets are 2-prong, and at these prices, they really need at least a spa; even Motel 6 has a pool... NIce place, but could use a few tweaks to make it really special. read more

Wowwwwwwwwwwww! This place is gorgeous! Can't believe such beautiful cabins exist in the middle of the desert in Joshua Tree! We stayed here when we visited Joshua Tree National Park because my boyfriend' and I got a LivingSocial coupon as a gift. To use the LivingSocial coupon, we had to make a 2-night reservation, so we chose to stay Saturday and Sunday night. Spin & Margie's has five different cabins and each one has a unique theme. We stayed in Cabin 5 and it's smaller than the other cabins, but it was still beautifully furnished. They had a TV with cable, a mini stereo system, refrigerator, free WiFi, and an outdoor patio with reclining chairs. The bathroom had wonderful shampoos and soaps too. If I could summarize my stay in Spin and Margie's and Joshua Tree, it would be timeless. Coming from Los Angeles, it was nice being in a peaceful and quiet area. Time seemed to move more slowly than it does in LA, and I felt re-energized every day I stayed there. You can also see amazing views of the mountains from your cabin. I can't wait to come back and visit Joshua Tree, and I would love to visit Spin and Margie's again. As a side note, there isn't a front office at Spin and Margie's which means that there isn't daily maid service. If there is an emergency, they do give you a number you can contact. However, my boyfriend and I were fine cleaning up the place ourselves. There wasn't really much to clean anyways. The average price of a night at Cabin 5 is $145.00, but we got a discount through the LivingSocial coupon. The sprawling grounds are private and away from the main highway. There are beautiful plants, cactus and succulents and quirky art mixed in to the landscape that creates the coolest vibe ever. Our spacious room was like our own apartment with a little kitchen, nice sized bathroom with a separate shower and a tub. We found the perfect getaway on our trip to Joshua Tree. Our home away from home was spotless, adorably decorated and cozy. The entire place is a feast for the eyes and wished we could take home with us the lovely patio area and our private yard space. We were close enough to all the action while feeling like we had our own private oasis. We had gotten an email from the owner after our arrival making sure everything was alright(which it was). She even called to make sure we weathered the torrential rain (we did fine) and were okay. We appreciated the attention to detail not only in our lodging but the property in general and checking in on us...we couldn't have been happier. We know if our travels bring us to the desert again we have a great place to relax and feel at home. read more

This is a beautiful location that has been decorated very cute, super friendly staff, and extremely convenient and near all the things you want to be close to when visiting Joshua Tree. There were however, some glitches. My account was charged three times and it took days and tons of correspondence to make sure I was refunded, while they were nice about it, I didn't really get the sense that they felt bad about it. If I wasn't the responsible type I would have potentially had overdraft fees. The other thing was we stayed in the air stream, which was really cozy, but there was a leak with the compost toilet that was honestly pretty gross, that even after being checked on still leaked. I was totally okay with a compost toilet because it is an air stream and that's how it goes but the leak from the toilet made it really hard to be comfortable. And the outside shower did not get hot. I wanted to give this place 5 stars and recommend it to TONS of friends who frequent Joshua Tree regularly, and would have done so (regardless of the above mentioned) if Spin & Margie's offered SOMETHING to make me feel like they really cared about me as their customer. Typically my experience with hotels/air bnbs/the hospitality industry in general, is that if there are issues (especially money issues) the staff does something nice like, puts a bottle of wine in the room, offers a courtesy discount, maybe a gift certificate to dinner, or even just a sincere note in the room apologizing. read more

This place used to be owned by people who care. It is a dump now. The mattresses are a complete joke, rooms were dirty, spider eggs everywhere, towels are old. When we pulled back the sheets there was hair everywhere. Disgusting. The pool is dirty, the lights around the property don't work. It is so sad because it was magical before. We cleaned prior to settling in due to Covid and the amount of dirt we got off the tile floor was disgusting. It is such a shame because there are few places to stay in Joshua Tree. We will be staying a Super 8 for half the money. We go there to enjoy the park so why pay for such neglect and denial. Shame on the new owners. Mindy would be appalled. read more

We've put family up at Spin & Margie's for years now, and our family absolutely loves it here. Last weekend, my mother-in-law and her gal pal, Pat, drove 48 buttercream cupcakes and a handle of bourbon across the Mojave Preserve, from Las Vegas to Joshua Tree. Kind of a Thelma and Louise -slash- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas style road trip, minus the ether, the bats, and the suicide pact. This was my mother in law's second appearance at Spin & Margie's. She and GT's whole family last stayed here for four or five nights in 2008, during our Joshua Tree wedding. They were then traveling with a toddler, who was quite taken with the color scheme and decor. The whole family was truly touched by Mindy's kindness and flexibility with their brood. My mother in law is coming back - with the family, this time - in a few weeks and they're once again taking up residence at Spin & Margie's. As a former tourist and current desert local, I've had the opportunity to visit, sleep in, and tour through most of the overnight facilities in the area. There's a lot of diversity out there in price and amenities, and it can be hard to decide what exactly you want from an overnight stay. I highly, highly recommend Spin & Margie's. It's clean, funky, reasonably priced, and convenient to pretty much anything and everything you came for. Four solid stars. read more

Typically when I do a hiking trip, I go as part of a group and camp. I don't need foofoo travel. However, the last time I was out there, I was all by myself, so I needed a legit place to stay. This place is a gem. For being by myself in the middle of nowhere, I felt very safe. The grounds are well kept, and the decor is eclectic and kitchy to go with the natural surroundings. I stayed in the Sonoran Traveler, which was cute, clean, reasonably priced, and had a little kitchenette where I made hot tea at night and sandwiches in the morning. I also had my own private patio area. The cabinets in the kitchen are stocked with some basic pantry supplies and tea. It was more than I expected, and I would stay there again for sure. The downside: The heating system is pretty loud in this suite. Maybe it is fixed by now. Who knows. read more

I am not a typical Yelp reviewer, but I felt compelled to write this review after my weekend at Spin & Margie's. It was the PERFECT place - peaceful, relaxing, and off the beaten path. We absolutely loved every second of our stay there. Mindy was so helpful and went well above and beyond to help you plan a wonderful trip in Joshua Tree, beyond just accommodations, and prior to your arrival. She even came to check and see if we were okay/needed anything during the 2-3 hour rain/thunderstorm and gave us suggestions of what to do once it passed. Inside the room itself, they have thought of everything. We bought paper plates, cups, etc. because we didn't know for sure what would be there, but they have EVERY essential in the kitchen (can-opener to measuring cups). The wifi works very well, good for us because we wanted to do a little research on the places we were visiting and seeing as JT first-timers - though Mindy provides with all this information as well! The ONLY downfall is there is no pool. I thought this would really bother me, but the room itself and the outdoor areas are so wonderful that I didn't end up caring about it at all. However, if the pool is a deal-breaker, they will set you up with the Joshua Tree Inn (?) or a different hotel that does have a pool? Overall, extremely satisified, loved the affordable living social deal, and 100% plan on going back. I never wanted to leave, and I can't wait to go back! read more

What a great hide-away it was! This place packs a punch of charm and hospitality from the super cute airstream trailer suite complete with bbq, outdoor shower and cozy eat in kitchen, to the responsive ownership of The Bennett's, Stacy and George. The rooms were super clean, neat and tidy and despite the time of year (the coldest night all year in fact) we were toasty warm in our trailer suite. George even heated the pool for our arrival so we could take a cozy dip after dinner. When we needed a few more towels, Stacy was right on board to get us a few more. They also suggested great things to do which made us feel welcome. The privacy was great and we felt we had the desert stars to ourselves even though the place was full. Additionally, it was easy to get to and self check in. I personally appreciated the hospitality of the owners being so easily accessible by phone. If you want a culture get-a-way into the desert, this is a great surprise in an otherwise rustic place. If you want a Stunning hike in Joshua Tree National Park and to sleep like a baby in a cozy hide-a-way, look no further than Spin and Margie's! it's a definite revisit on my list! read more

Really enjoyed staying here! Very reasonably priced and convenient access to the West entrance of Joshua Tree park. We stayed in the large cottage that has a private fenced in yard area. It was very comfortable, nicely decorated (a bit quirky), and has a fully equipped kitchen. Some things you should know that I didn't see mentioned in any other reviews are below. The wireless internet is free however the only area I was able to get a connection was outside in the courtyard. Inside the unit there was no signal at all. Luckily I had solid AT&T cell service so I just used my iphone for any web needs. Although the cottages are off of the main road you still hear a fair amount of traffic noise at night inside. It's not horrible or anything but if you're looking for absolute quiet this isn't it. Most likely you'll be sleeping with the swamp cooler running anyhow and that does a pretty good job of drowning out the road noise. If I were going to be in or near Joshua Tree I would definitely stay here again. read more

This was our first trip to Joshua Tree and we are glad we found such a lovely spot - we were warm and cozy during the very cold early January evenings. Our room had everything we needed, and the whole property is funky and delightful. Lots of old school cowboy desert charm. Stacy and her staff were super friendly, welcoming and helpful, with lots of good advice. It's well located - far enough out of town to be quiet, but still close to easily get to the Joshua Tree National Park entrances. We were fortunate to get three clear (and cold) nights there, so the stargazing was splendid. We definitely recommend this place. read more

Found this place on the Internet while searching for a place to stay in Joshua Tree. What a great find. I called and got the scoop from Margie (aka Mindie). We wanted the big room, but it was occupied so she set us up with 2 smaller rooms. they use evaporative coolers instead of air conditioners and the rooms are comfy cool. The grounds and rooms are uniquely and nicely decorated. Small kitchenettes and sitting rooms in each unit. Free internet. TV with DVD players. My family loved it. The grounds are set up so that you could just hang out there if you wanted to..great sitting areas, grill, etc. but make sure you get to Joshua Tree NP! Be sure to just take some time to enjoy the desert night sky every night while you are there. read more

I'd never been to Joshua Tree National Park so my boyfriend and I decided to make a weekend of it. Neither of us are campers so we needed a cozy place to stay. This was definitely it. We were in suite #4, which was a small free-standing building that included a kitchen and a big bathroom with a great deep bathtub. We brought a bunch of food with us and it turned out to be a good decision because the second day of our stay, we were basically trapped in the room listening to the 40+ MPH winds whip around outside! Margie (whose real name I think is Mindy? is this this same person?) stopped by to check on us and offered to bring us anything we needed. She let us check out later than the normal check-out time as an apology for the inconvenience. How sweet is that? We will be back! read more

My husband I spent the weekend here and it was perfect!! It really is the perfect desert hideaway. They have decorated the place so perfectly. The kitchens are nicely stocked with pans, plates, cups and anything you could need to cook. There is also really great outside space to play bocce ball and horse shoes. The hideaway is also very close to the park entrance! I can't imagine staying anywhere else when visiting Joshua tree. I love staying here. The second time we came out we rented the entire motel since there's only 5 units. I'm not a big fan of southwestern decor but somehow Mindy and her husband (can't think of his name) have done a really great job furnishing this place. It's a great value for your money. Stayed here for a couple days and absolutely enjoyed every piece of it. It's perfectly hidden, the decor is beautiful and unique, and the grounds are fun to explore and chill out in. All the details in the cabin- from the art to the linen to the dishes were carefully selected, which added to the beautiful yet comfy feel and made us want to stay much longer than we'd booked for. read more

If you're looking for a swanky, elitist hotel experience then move on...oh, and you probably suck. We escaped the city to take in some great music at Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown. Aaahhhh....relax in the colorful, kitsch & quaint surroundings after a long day of hiking, or a long night of music & whiskey! We (4 of us, 2 adults & 2 teenagers) stayed in the Desert Rambler - Suite #1 - for a weekend last year & made ourselves right at home. Very comfy, however, this particular suite did not have any real privacy (i.e., bedroom), don't think any of them do. But, alas, there's plenty of privacy in the desert after dark!! We did have a private yard, which was nice. There's no maid service. There's no pool, which would suck in the summer. But who in their right mind "chills" in the desert in the summer? They're super friendly & informative when making reservations but you'll likely never meet them as there is no on-site office. Fine with us! We loved this place & we'll be back. read more

Spent 2 nights at Spin and Margie's with my sister and we had wonderful experience. It was our first time in Joshua Tree and Spin and Margie's offered the perfect mix of desert charm and homey cabin comfort. We had everything we needed in our room- ac, extra towels, coffee, kitchen utensils, toiletries, books, joshua tree maps, park guides... and a bottle opener :) The grounds are beautiful. It's about a 10 minute drive from the joshua tree park entrance and is very close to shops and places to eat. We would come back to Spin and Margie's in a heart beat! We accidentally forgot our music speaker and Margie mailed it back to us. What a sweet experience we had! read more

Spin and Margie's makes me want to visit J.T. every weekend!! It is a giant breath of fresh clean air, with a splash of color, and creativity. We stayed in cabin #5 this weekend and it did not disappoint!! After all the site seeing adventures, it was nice to come back to a glass of wine, while lounging in our private patio, with nothing but the dark sky and stars to smother us. We will definitely be back!! read more
