I love this library. It's set right next to the marina. I'd sit here for hours pouring over psychology books.

The Quadrangular Through Truss Bridge, also known as the Peshtigo Rail Bridge (Black Bridge South),…read moreis located over the Peshtigo River in Peshtigo, Marinette County, Wisconsin. This bridge is part of the Canadian National Railway (formerly the Chicago & North Western Railway) and is situated in the city of Peshtigo, inland from Lake Superior. It features three spans of quadrangular through truss design, with a total length of 356 feet, where the two end spans are longer than the middle span (95 feet). The bridge, built in 1906, is still in use, carrying an estimated four trains per day. This was a major hangout for kids back in the day before cell phones and video games. At low water you could climb down beneath it onto the islands. The rock pillars were constructed in a way tht made for a natural rock climbing experience. It has since been posted as a no trespassing area but you are able to get close and take some awesome pics. This use to feed into the old town depot which is no longer there. Was the only passenger train in the area.

This is a living history museum, where you can take a self-guided tour through nine historically significant buildings that depict rural life from 1880 to 1910. You'll see a schoolhouse, a store, a chapel, a blacksmith, a tool museum and recreations of regular-people houses. Be sure to say hello to the innocuously seeming but ultimately demented dolls sitting on a chair in the corner of one of the houses. Before or after walking around the grounds and peeping into the buildings, grab some saltwater taffy (4 for $1!) at the main building, which is also kind of a general store itself. You'll also find things like hot chocolate, as well as vintage gadgets and goods to purchase or just look at, like I did.

Started with the cheese plate and very much enjoyed the selection. I wish they would have provided more bread or crackers but that is because I'm a carb lover. Additionally, we had to clarify what one of the items on the cheese plate was because it tasted like alcohol to my husband. Looked like olives or cherries. It was indeed a type of cherry and had alcohol. I was grateful we had asked before trying myself at 8 months pregnant. My husband got the pressed 1/2 chicken and we both loved it. It had an incredible depth of flavor, great seasoning. I got the braised short ribs and enjoyed these as well. However, I wished they had been served with mashed potatoes instead of what I believe were grits. We ended our meal with the flourless chocolate cake which was the perfect cherry on top. Caramel spoons with popped amaranth on top were served with our check. Nice touch! Cozy atmosphere, nice fire crackling and friendly servers. What more can we ask for?

But when we saw the sign on the freeway for Copper Culture State Park, and having recently seen a great exhibit on the region's Archaic Period at the Field Museum in Chicago, and a not-so-good one at the Milwaukee Public Museum ... well, we were in. The 42-acre park is on the north side of the Oconto River, on the west side of the city of Oconto. The park was once the site of a prehistoric cemetery of the Old Copper Complex people who occupied the northern Midwest from about 4,000 BCE to 2,000 BCE. In a nutshell, we don't know where these people came from, how they lived, or where they went. The independently-operated Oconto Archaic Copper Museum, located within the Charles Werrebroeck Museum (an old farmhouse), was just being opened by Dick Doeren as we drove up. Dick showed us a short video, then went on to show us around and tell us more about the Copper Culture. Very informative! The park also contains ancient burial grounds used by early Native Americans. It was uncovered in 1952 by a 13-year-old boy who unearthed human bones while playing in an old quarry here. However, the skeletons subsequently unearthed by archaeologists have apparently never been repatriated. There's also no way of knowing how many burials were disturbed before 1952 when the place was a functioning quarry. So we didn't want to invite bad things by tromping around this ancient cemetery. Otherwise, we enjoyed our brief visit, and will come back when we're in the area.
