This 1868 lighthouse that is still in operation also serves as a very nice museum to educate the public about everyday life for the lighthouse keeper and his family from 1883-1918. The personable, knowledgeable tour guide very effectively communicated the history of the building and duties of Captain Duclon, his wife Julia, and their seven sons. A Duclon relative gave the lighthouse some of the family's original furniture and helped them decorate each room exactly as it would have been during their 35 years there. Since I am a professional pianist, it was very interesting to hear how the small original piano that is there now was taken out and in the window along with the many other instruments as the family performed often in the area. It is easy to drive a car near the lighthouse and park in the lot that has a vault toilet, which is a very smelly outhouse for emergencies. (I recommend using the real restrooms with flush toilets at the Headquarters near the park entrance or at Nicolet Beach.) The tour was definitely worth the $5 fee!

I love history and for others who love history you have to visit this location so visit here

If it's a little choppy and you are prone to seasickness I would highly advise a reschedule. We rolled the dice, booked in advance and paid $150 for 2 for a 2hr choppy boat ride on hard wooden seats with a 1" cushion that slides around. We would recommend this trip only to people who can check the weather and book same day. I realize they dont control the weather but we didnt get the same value for the same money paid by folks lucky enough to have calm water. 3 shipwrecks? My wife and I are fairly competent semi-pro photographers...i didnt even try to get a picture...im not sure if she got any...she hasn't looked yet. I know i saw zero shipwrecks though.

Bring snacks and beverages. 3.) Plan to spend some time in Gills rock, there are little shops, restaurants, and an ice cream place. Our captain was Robbo and the crew for the day was Bunny. Kids 12 and under were half price (bonus), and as my 12 year old said, "it.was.awesome!". They had a great knowledge of Door County and local shipwrecks. The captain was also a diver so was able to tell us about what the shipwrecks looked like from the bottom of the water. The took us to Plum Island to give a very thorough history of Deaths Door Passage, the ships that travel through it, and the lighthouses. We also drove around Pilot Island, to learn about its past and current state (which was bizarre). You could tell they really cared about the area and wanted to pass their knowledge on to us. Before leaving it was a nice warm day in door county, by the time we got out on the water we found ourselves putting on all our layers, so pack accordingly. The crew encouraged food and beverages, which we regretted not bringing. Tips are appreciated!
