I've eaten here a couple of times on trips to Abilene and it never disappoints. I'm an Indian food novice, but Spicy India never disappoints. I'm a long-time regular at Spicy India, and it's with great sadness that I have to report a significant change for the worse. Our group of four visited on October 24th for lunch. Despite being the only patrons, the kitchen was incredibly slow. We waited almost 30 minutes for appetizers and another 15-20 minutes for our main courses. More critically, the food quality has plummeted, suggesting a change in the cook staff. My beloved Gobi Manchurian was unrecognizable--it was mushy, excessively salty, and had a completely different taste profile. Important finishing touches were missing from mine and another dish, like the seasoning on my cucumber slices and the almonds on the Chicken 555. When Sherry mentioned this to the cook, his attitude was dismissive, stating the garnishes were "not needed." This disregard for quality and customer preference extended to our main dishes: three of us ordered Chicken Korma; two spicy and one medium, but all three arrived mild. To top it off, the curries were barely warm. Spicy India is too good to let these issues destroy its reputation. I strongly urge the owner and manager to take immediate action to restore the food quality and consistency to its former glory. read more

I went to store 5 minutes after the time (had already been 26 minutes plus our 5 minutes later, and they said it would be 10-15 minutes still. We sat there for 15 minutes and he handed me the food aggressively and then closed the window. I said thank you, but the guy just turned around and shut the window. We checked the receipt and it said "ready for pick up at 6:14pm, we got there at 6:19pm but it wasn't ready until 15 minutes later. We got the feeling they didn't have anything made and they got it all done while we sat in the drive through. I passed by Spicy India hundreds of times, and it never caught my attention because, to be honest, a restaurant beside a gas station was not my cup of tea. A friend from Abilene recommended the place and assured me I would like it. He was wrong because the restaurant blew my mind!! I ordered Chicken Tikka for $11.99 and the Spicy Indian Goat curry $14.99. I came from Houston, where you can find great Indian restaurants, but they are no competition to Spicy Indian. The restuarant looks fairly unassuming but the food here was amazing. We don't have an Indian restaurant in our city and I've been craving Indian food. My husband, son, and I decided to stop here. I got the paneer butter masala which really hit the spot. My husband got a similar dish but with chicken. We were both very impressed with the food. We have our favorite Indian restuarant in Rio Rancho, NM, but we thought this food was even better. The service was prompt and they were kind with us, given we had a baby making a big mess. The only thing is I wasnt able to get my lassi. Other than that the experience was great and I am eager to stop by again next time we are in Abilene. The ambiance was casual. I came out a few weeks ago with my sister. It had been years since I ate here because I moved away. I wish I could remember what all we ordered. I believe a mushroom masala was was mushrooms and peas, garlic naan, whatever she ordered. Though I don't remember everything we ate that day, I remember it being delicious. Wonderful food and chock full of vegetables. Such amazing flavor but not a strong"curry flavor." Wait staff is so nice. Sherry (one of the waitresses) is so good to explain the dishes and help with selections. I wouldn't call the kitchen staff cooks. They are chefs, going by the delicacy of the dishes. I am vegan and eat gluten free. Vegetable Kadai is my favorite. This is the only place in Abilene that I can be sure of a completely vegan dish that is gluten free. I love it! The food we got was awesome and very affordable prices! I'm disappointed that an Indian food restaurant wouldn't have a thali plate though and that's my only complaint. (thali means when you get 3-4 smaller portions with rice and some sides, it's really common at most Indian food restaurants). Would definitely come back. read more

Honestly didn't know what to expect when ordering from Spicy India. I've had Indian food from many places both within and outside of the US. I wouldn't recommend visiting this place. We got take-out and once we saw the Tikka Masala, I thought it was a bio-weapon. The colour of the dish is crazy with food colouring, and tasting nothing similar to a Tikka Masala. The Chicken Korma was a tad better, but for some reason they put scrambled egg in it?? Yeah, no idea. The rice was clumpy and barely cooked thoroughly. So to summarise, if you know nothing about Indian cuisine, go ahead and let your standards be set to a bare minimum, or be smart and go to Raising Canes instead. read more

We've been here before and it was actually pretty good. Good enough that we decided to come back up to Abilene again with the thought of enjoying some great Indian food at the top of our priority list. Unfortunately we will not be back, probably ever. Aside from the fact that the service is mediocre, the food was pretty awful this time. The chicken tikka masala was overcooked, the biryani (for some reason battered and fried(?!) to inedible chewiness) was terrible and nothing of note was really good. The naan was okay. For the price that you pay here the food should be much better. So disappointing. Usually when we get Indian cuisine there are leftovers that we look forward to; but for the first time ever I actually left all the uneaten portions (which was most of it) there on the table. So sad to see a promising place go downhill. Also if you're not into blaring bass hip hop music you might want to look elsewhere. Not sure who they're trying to impress -sometimes it's nice to have a peaceful atmosphere but to each their own. No judgement on that but the food was really bad. Spicy India has its flavours on point coupled with reasonable pricing and courteous staff. The food is fresh, aromatic with generous portion sizes. The Dal makhani and goat curry are not to be missed. As is the mango lassi. Definitely recommend it. read more

To premise my below, the food is incredible, but I am leaving 2 stars for horrific service and organization. I Took a road trip to New Mexico, stopped here on my way to my destination; and was very pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. The wait was 30 minutes for food and service was a bit slow, despite being one of the few occupied tables in the restaurant. On my way back to Texas (14 hour drive) I decided to come back because of how good the food was. In preparation of the wait from my previous dining experience, I called in the meal 40 minutes prior to arriving, and was told our food would be ready in 40 minutes. Upon arrival we were told the food wasn't ready yet, and nothing else; therefore we proceeded to wait at a table. The place was packed, so I felt calling ahead was a good call. 20 minutes go by (mind you the take out order now placed 60 minutes ago) and no water nor updates. We ask the hostess for an update, and she gets flustered and tells me "your food isn't even on the stove yet, it might not be ready for another hour". So I said ok well then cancel order that is too long of a wait. No apologies...nothing. I understand good restaurants get busy at times, but 3 reasons I'm proceeding to give you 2 stars despite good food, 1) if you know dinner hours are going to be busy, fork out the money to have more staff working, 2) when you are busy, train your employees not to get flustered, and at least serve water, and most importantly 3) when the kitchen gets backed up 1 HOUR AND 20 MINUTES behind schedule, tell your customers that upfront instead of allowing them to sit around (no offense, but I don't want to spend my free time hanging out on the side of the highway in Abilene on a Saturday night when I have 6 hours left of a drive)! read more

This place is amazing !! I'm visiting here for a few months from the PNW and have been looking for a place that serves Middle Eastern food or something similar. Yelp recommended Spicy India. There are so many selections on the menu. Today I tried the Lamb Biryani with Naan. The Lamb Biryani was wonderful and seemingly cooked dum style and seasoned perfectly. I'm thinking the lamb just fell off of the bone as it was being prepared. The person taking care of me was polite and attentive. The dining area and washroom were clean. I recently took a friend here. We both liked the Chicken Saag, Chicken Tikka Masala, Samosas, and Mango Lassi. I liked the Tamarind Rice and Chai Tea, but my friend wasn't a fan. I have been here a ton of times and always find it delicious. I do have to warn that some of their dishes are super spicy, so tell the waiter your spice tolerance before finalizing your order. The only bad thing about this place is that the waiters sometimes forget about you if you sit on the far side of the restaurant. You can just walk up to one of the staff and they will gladly help you if you need anything. I notice they get a lot of togo orders and are often short staffed for the tables, but their always friendly. I highly recommend if you want to try something new with a ton of flavor! read more

Basically a fried empanada, filled with potato, peas and maybe a corn kernel or 2? It came with 2 sauces. A green herby one and a brown one. I preferred the brown. I ordered the butter chicken. It came with basmati rice. Delicious! My husband got the chicken tikka masala. It also comes with basmati rice and it was even better than mine!! We also asked our waitress what the most popular menu item and she said the garlic naan. Naturally, we got an order of garlic naan. It came with 2 pieces and it was garlicky and buttery and heavenly and ALL THE THINGS! I wish I woulda ordered more! Don't get scared of their name! If you have visions of some flaming food torching you, this isn't it. It is a great taste of Indian food in an approachable restaurant. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala. It was a very smooth, tasty and exotic curry without a punishing heat for my gringo taste buds. It came with a very well cooked long grain rice that absorbed the fluid and complemented it well. Onions, carrots and chicken all cooked to perfection were in the reddish/orange sauce. I also ordered the garlic naan which was a very powerful garlic taste with a well cooked flat bread. If you aren't a huge fan of garlic, make sure you have some after dinner mints or at least a tooth brush handy. I splurged and ordered the mango lassi to wash it down.
