We have here a small Indian food store, with a restaurant attached, all vegetarian. It looks and is…read morein substance quite similar to places I've seen on the other side of the world. This is not a bad thing; clearly having the groceries and restaurant together is a model that works. I went for the Sunday brunch buffet. This is not expensive, it is all you can eat, and I ate all I could eat. Did I really need to scarf down three baturas, three vadai, two idli, two parathas, and a wealth of chickpea curry and sambar to dip all that in (and some upma, because, you know, healthy)? I felt a tad queasy afterwards as a result, but there was nothing wrong with the food, that much is for sure. Readers who do not know what these things are would be well advised to experiment; most of them are fried, based on some combination of rice, wheat, and lentils, and all of them are delicious. To top it off, they had chai, which was quite sweet and some of the best I've had. The place is a bit of a dive, not to any scary extent but it isn't fancy. The grocery element is modest, and includes mostly packaged and frozen foods, with some nice grain and bean selection, but nothing really fresh. The place does catering, and the restaurant is open for more traditional made to order food as well as buffets at other times. If you're up for some reasonably priced, vegetarian (and reasonably vegan-friendly) food and can make the trip out to Kenmore, I'd give it a shot.

I'm going to put this out there: the food is pretty damn good. And the vindaloo is actually spicy,…read morethe meals are not terribly expensive (cheaper if you pay cash!), the Lassi's are creamy and the service is good. However I got food poisoning. And I NEVER get food poisoning. I have a cast iron stomach! To be fair, out of the seven times I have eaten here I've only gotten food poisoning once. But it was of the brutal variety, and I haven't really been game to go back since. Which is a crying shame because (pre-puking) the curries are actually delicious. This is a great place to bring a bunch of people; sharing the curries work out cheaper and they cater to large groups with long tables. Just make sure you make a reservation, especially on weekends, as the restaurant tends to fill up quickly. The decor inside is cute, tablecloths and hanging Indian decorations, very red and gold. It gives off a lovely warm feeling, similar to the one I had in my stomach right before my dinner reappeared. Give this place a try if you're in the mood for some decent, not too expensive curry, or if you need somewhere to take a few people. Do it for me, because I'm still too scared.

When I was living the student life in St Lucia, A Night in India was the go-to restaurant for…read morebirthday dinners as they would accommodate large groups and their dining was casual (plus everyone loves Indian). A meat curry will set you back $17.50. With complementary and unlimited rice, the pricing is pretty good. Naan is a tad expensive, starting from $4.50, but you must try the spinach and cheese naan ($5.50)--I could eat just it alone! It's also worth mentioning that A Night in India do some great specials. If you go during lunchtime from Wednesday to Friday or for dinner Sunday to Thursday, you can get a meat curry with rice, naan, a pappadum and a can of soft drink for only $17.50! With the exception of Indian Kitchen in West End, this would be the cheapest curry I've found in Brisbane. A Night in India is great for groups, as they're flexible with splitting the bill and it's BYO. However, I did attempt a hot date here once and I've gotta say, it didn't quite have that ambiance. It was fine, but the decor is a little tacky. It's better suited to students in search of a cheap, but delicious meal, close to campus and just a wander away from the RE. Perfect!
