Pho ga - Vietnamese chicken noodle soup
    Suzie L.

The owner is very friendly and we love the Vietnamese themed decor at this clean, fresh cafe on the edge of Fortitude Valley. At $10, this is the most we've ever paid for a bahn mi - but the District 1 version with roasted crispy skin pork belly is delicious. The pho ga - classic Vietnamese chicken noodle soup was very nice and full of great quality ingredients but not remarkable. It's a little bit more expensive than Inala, Darra or Sunnybank but this is reflected in the quality of the ingredients and the more central Brisbane location.

Great little Vietnamese place at top end of Brunswick Mall (opposite Cloudland). Only discovered this place recently but LOVING having a good authentic Vietnamese place to go. Everything is made fresh - rice paper rolls are SO good - Bahn Mi is amazing & HUGE, bread is so crusty and awesome in thay special way that Vietnamese rolls should be. Staff are super friendly and will greet and say goodbye to almost everyone who comes in & out. Other faves include the Vietnamese Iced Coffee or Lemon Soda. Also save room for the Sweet Potato Fries, which come in sweet or savoury... Haven't tried sweet out as yet but it intrigues me... Looks a bit meh from the front walking past but do come in - well worth it

In the search for decent pho it's sadly lean pickings in the valley these days so I'm glad to find this place after my for years favourite place moved away. The components taste fresh and the broth tastes like broth not chemicals. The place is clean and the people are nice.

District 1 is a very welcome addition to Chinatown and a very slick operation with a lot to love but a few limitations are holding it back from becoming a top flight destination for Viet cuisine. Chinatown has a number of quirks about it when taken as a whole. What it does well, it does exceptionally well. Thai Wi Rat and Enjoy Inn produce some of the finest Thai and Cantonese food in Brisbane. There's a really terrific tier of restaurants under them of places such as Green Tea, Red Lotus and Chinahouse which produce exceptionally nice food at great prices and both Yuen's and Burlington are highly dependable and comprehensive supermarkets. But there's frankly a lot of filler restaurants that are just not particularly good, and certainly very few that rise to the level of quality that is standard in Sunnybank or Darra and most of West End. These days the better are found in the surrounding streets. This is a real pity because for years and years, Chinatown was the perfect spot for an unlimited variety of cheap and cheerful eastern dining. This is no particular restaurant's fault, but a change of direction and some innovation would be very welcome. And District 1 is absolutely a step in the right direction. The layout is very on trend with counter service, a very casual vibe, keenly competitive pricing, no reservations and a small menu with a large selection of shared and snack options. It's fantastic to see a Viet owned and operated restaurant taking on this trend and owning it. District 1 is active on social and pushing word-of-mouth hard. Like them or otherwise, and I do, these are the directions restaurants and diners are moving in. Over two very pleasant visits, one on a public holiday Monday afternoon and one on a Wednesday after work, there's every sign this is paying off. On both occasions it was bustling with a younger set and tables were at a premium. I haven't tried their banh mi, still an oddly hard-to-find commodity in a city with a mature Vietnamese dining culture, but people are raving about them. The rice paper rolls are fantastic and it's great to see Viet barbecue featuring prominently. What Vietnamese cooks can do with a charcoal grill is astounding, so it's great to see it deployed liberally across the menu including betel wrapped grilled beef in the noodle salad section. It's a lovely dish and so is the bun bo hue I tried on my first visit but here's where we hit a hurdle. They are both quite good. There is nothing wrong with them at all. Absolutely nothing in either is bad, but there's a bit missing. There's a blandness to these dishes that I found slightly but not terminally jarring. I'm used to ordering a side of fresh chilli, I take my food with a preference towards volcanic. The chilli that arrived wasn't bird's eye but the longer variety, which is an insight into what's going on. Both dishes were in need of punching up, more herb, more chilli, more fish sauce and more sugar. In clarity, I am not suggesting these are bad dishes per se, but in a city where most people have been eating Viet for a very, very long time, a restaurant can be less restrained and take greater risks with their seasoning. Don't let this put you off. Really, really do try District 1, it's a great little spot and the prices are fantastic. It's also new and there's plenty of time to grow the menu and refine their offering. The Valley is changing and it's fantastic to see a Chinatown restaurant taking that evolution head on.

Nice simple basic menu of the classic Banh Mi, rice paper rolls, pho, and traditional Vietnamese salads

Hands down one of the best Banh Mi's I've ever had (pork belly)! So authentic, sweet little Vietnamese street food hide out; you'd walk past without noticing it. Cheap and cheerful vibe, fast and friendly service, basic furnishings but cute. Good for a quick snack on the run, lunch break for the locals, or a light and simple dinner before hitting the Valley bar scene.

Great food and customer service. The food brought back fond memories of a trip to HCM City earlier this year. Authentic and full of flavour.

Vietnamese Mint is practically my second home. Service is friendly, and the menu is simple, affordable, and always delicious. Sides are $6, Mains (soups and rice dishes), come in Regular $10 or Large $12, and they also offer "ice cream" for $4. Have been here many times, and have always come away satisfied and feeling full. On the occasion that I am more inclined to "take-away", it's best to ring ahead, and your order will be ready in no time to be picked up. My favourite dishes, are the regular Chicken Noodle Soup, the Lemongrass chicken salad, Vietnamese spring rolls, and the Lemongrass marinated porkchop with rice, spring rolls, salad, & fried egg (for only $12). The latter dish is a "special" so it may not become permanent on the menu. I think the word is slowly getting out, that this place is great value, and serves amazing food, because it does appear a lot busier (albeit slowly) that when I first came here when it opened. I feel lucky to have a place I can rely on to never disappoint. Vietnamese mint rocks!

This is not fine dining so don't expect any glamour, however this place does honest, great value Vietnamese food. Tonight my wife and I ordered the chicken rice paper rolls, the Vietnamese spring rolls, the chicken noodle soup, and the spring rolls vermicelli salad. All dishes were tasty, and we have a enough left over for lunch for me for tomorrow :). What I really liked was being provided with bean shoots, fresh lime, and fresh basil in a separate bag with the soup as this added a real zing. Also they had home made chilli sauce that you could pack and take home. This is the type of place you definitely want to see stick around - the guys that work there are quick and really down to earth so please give this place a try.

As a result, nearly every Wednesday in the CBD and on the second and fourth Saturdays at the Powerhouse, I visit The Rice Hut at the Jan Power Markets for a little takeaway. Two sisters run this business together, and deliver fresh, tasty and healthy Vietnamese food across a short but solid menu. Rice paper rolls (everything from sizzling beef to pork to prawn to tofu) are rolled up on the spot with colourful ingredients, banh mi sandwiches (get them at the Saturday markets, as they use a different bread guy on Wednesdays - it's still good mid-week, but really great on the weekends) with pork, and rice noodle salads are all on offer, and there's not a thing on that menu I've not found to be well-intended, well-prepared and super-fresh. The CBD is growing in lunch options for Vietnamese (AJ's, Little Saigon, Pho Viet, Roll Shop, Quik Quack, etc), but when you can buy product from people who want to deliver only the freshest product and focus on making sure that everything they hand over the counter is something you'll love, that's a business worth supporting. The Rice Hut can be found towards the back of the CBD market near Bagel Boys, and on the aisle through the grass (not the sidewalk aisle) at the Powerhouse.

It looks like the secret is well and truly out about The Rice Hut every time I visit there is a long line out of the stand the Wednesday lunch crowd in the Brisbane CBD is crazy about this place, and with good reason. 6 words you need to remember to say "Three pigs Banh Mi sandwich please" And yes before you ask yes that is 3 different kinds of pork!! And we all know that is mathematically 3 times as awesome as one kind of pork. As for taste only explanation I can imagine is that Janette and Janine the (two sisters that own/operate the rice hut) go hunting for angles somehow capture their tears and eye drop a single angel tear into each sandwich for them to taste this good! I know in reality they use the freshest ingredients and a Vietnamese style not angel's tears making these sandwiches with tastes that just come together into something really special. I always order two of these Banh Mi intending to take one of them home for afternoon tea or supper and I ALWAYS end up eating both of them at lunch. Wednesdays regardless how bad things are at work is a day I look forward to because it is Banh Mi day! Do yourself a favour one Wednesday and check out the rice hut for lunch and when it turns out it is some of the best Vietnamese you have ever had.... I will say now pre-emptively... you are welcome. One quick tip with the long line and high demand for these you should rock up early, even with the long queue Janette and Janine work furiously to drill though the line and still somehow have a smile, a positive attitude and provide excellent service. 11 out of 10 for The Rice Hut!

Aside from the insensitive name and the conical hats for patrons to wear, the food was not good. When we were seated the waiter told us the food was meant to be shared and to head up to the bar to order. So we ordered a couple of beers, the grilled chicken vermicelli salad, the grilled corn and the com tam. The bar staff told us drinks would be delivered to the table. So we sat down and waited. Eventually we asked someone and they came through with the beers, just as the food arrived. We reminded them that we had also ordered water. The chicken salad was bland, and came with three overcooked tiny chicken skewers. One was so dry we couldn't eat it or get it off the skewer. The corn was cold in the middle (which hinted at it being cooked earlier and then put on the grill before service). And finally the com tan was a cutlet on the bone, which made sharing impossible. The rice was gluggy and overcooked and the sauce was way too sweet. The water and another round of beers came after we ate, so can only assume that this was our original order. We accepted the water and said we'd already gotten the beers. I let our waitress know that the corn was cold and the chicken overcooked, she apologised and we didn't hear anything else about it. One star for the house beer, which was actually not bad.
