I typically prefer local businesses especially in Asheville to chains, but this one gets a pass…read morebecause it's quite good. I've purchased many rubs, salts, spices, and sugars from them over the years and all of them have been amazing. I especially like their smoked salts. I like to bake giant chocolate chip cookies and sprinkle them with the smoked salt crystals to give them an extra layer of flavoring. You can taste anything you want such as the salts or sugars or rubs, just ask one of the associates to help you. You can smell anything you like yourself by just opening the jars and taking a nice whiff. Many items come in bags and some come in shakers. If you get something coarse you can ask for a grinder top that goes on your shaker for when you want smaller particles. I love the butchers blend general purpose seasoning for many things. My kids love the cinnamon sugar shaker with a grinder top....the put it on everything and we frequently run out. In addition to salts, spices, and sugars they have a huge tea selection. And before you scoff at the prices, just remember it takes just a tiny amount of these high quality loose leaf teas to make a cup of tea. Teas that you buy in the store are not fresh and are harvested too early, commercialized, and it requires a lot more to get the flavor you want. So these tiny bags of tea really do last a long time. I like to look up ancient tea and herbal blends online and then buy all the components here and make my own teas to try and then adjust the recipes to my liking. They often have some free samples of tea and other items to try hot or cold in the store, just ask. For me this is a store I always stop at when visiting Asheville.

*POST HOLIDAY UPDATE*…read more Karen has added a few new spice packets and one is the ultimate local recipe, Asheville Brew Stew! What could be better for local residents? Here are the ingredients to spice a warm winter beef or lamb stew. You'll need to add your favorite local beer and get on over to The New York Butcher Shoppe in Arden for your favorite cut of local beef. If you ask politely they are happy to chunk it up for you so all you have to do is add ingredients to it. It's perfect for these cold winter days that are upon us right now. Let's really support all local businesses and get on this. Karen also has a wonderful Hungarian spice packet for fish if you're feeling the need for lighter fare. I cannot recommend this highly enough. I'm a huge fan. And if you're out of town, Karen's business is online and she ships. They made wonderful stocking stuffers this year for me to give to all my friends. Good luck on making that beef stew although you won't need luck, Karen makes it easy to make perfectly seasoned dishes for every home cook. Cheers to a better, healthier 2021!

I absolutely love using these spice packets for a quick, easy, and delicious meal! And the best…read morepart is the versatility. Each spice packed gives you easy recipes and suggestions on what to add. Quite often I'll use half of the spices with the suggested chicken, beef, etc, and the other half I will make vegetarian/vegan friendly and add vegetables, potatoes, or some sort of vegetarian meat alternative for added protein. There is enough food in one packet for my partner to have a meal and leftovers for lunch the next day with the meat curry. And the same for me with the veggie curry. They also make great gifts for friends and family around the holidays since they are gluten free, all natural spices, without any preservatives. And recipes can easily be made vegan too.

There is no store store to walk into, but even if they had one I wouldn't go since it is more convenient to have it dropped of or to meet them somewhere. I have only waited a couple times for them. Usually they are early or right on time. The guy I usually talk to is very knowledgeable and he has told me about his trips to Asia to the farm. I really like the green maeng da during the day and the red Borneo after work. I work in construction and it makes the impact from years of grueling work a little bit easier to bear. I tried his white Bali a few times (free samples!) but it was way too much for me. It made me too edgey like more than coffee or red bull, but one of my laborers absolutely loves it.
