Slushies available in the summer, cocktails in the winter. Their fruit wines are just that- no grapes added. Delicious clean flavors! Wines range from bubbly, to crisp and fruity, or dry and smooth. Very nice line-up. Something for everyone. If you enjoy whiskey or bourbon we highly recommend trying the Railroad.. it's dangerously smooth! Perfect neat or in an Old Fashion. I am the type of person who likes it already paired with what it needs so I went for an option under others. I got the bear dump plate which is their take of a garbage plate. My only recommendation is they do a princess plate (half portion) because there was so much I was full within 5 minutes! The food was delicious and the bartenders were great company. The beer varieties were nice and I actually loved their seltzer. It has no flavor and they have a variety of flavor syrups to add to it, the lavender with it is very refreshing. I'm reviewing Charlie John's as a Bookstore-Café. Because there's one little table in the back by the deli, and we had (seriously) a delightful time there after a few dozen banal visits for groceries and supplies. First off, the made to order sandwiches -- we got egg salad and tuna salad -- are quite good. The Broccoli salad was as good a one as I've ever had, although I suspect that was because there were little bits of ham in it we didn't notice until after we started eating it (we are not dogmatic vegetarians, and occasionally fall off the wagon anyway). The deli staff were extremely pleasant, and I don't mean this as a knock on any particular establishment, but during the busy summer season that really stands out among other more harried employees of some businesses I shan't mention. And then we had the added pleasure of being able to talk directly to a half dozen patrons, as we were blocking the access to pork roll, ground turkey, and littleneck clams from our perch at the sole table. Second: the bookstore. CJ's has a half a row of books in the camping section, plus another stub for maps and guidebooks, and honestly, I think I've been in every bookstore in the ADK, I think this has the best-curated books of local interest. They have some truly small-press low-print-run titles here, from a biography of Nick Stoner to a history of the Moose Plains Wilderness. It's fun just to browse and while you can't buy everything, we always make it a point to buy something. That's when it occurred to me: we were having as enjoyable a time as we have at bookstore cafés. I mean, this sure beats Barnes and Noble. So having not bothered to review Charlie John's before -- what else is there to say about the best small grocery store in the ADK that hasn't been said in other reviews -- and convey to you that you now have a secret rainy day destination. That is the Charlie John's Bookstore Café.

When I saw the sandwich the owner (and deli man) Jason made me, I wanted to kiss him on the mouth. And I may have if it wasn't for this whole pandemic thing. (My wife would've been fine with it, she knows how important sandwiches are to me.) If you don't know, the Boar's Head brand is just quality product for your cold cuts. Turkey, ham, salami, pepperoni...it's all good. And not only does Jason have the meats (just missing the cracked pepper turkey as far as I'm concerned), he's also got an actual Boar's Head on the wall. Because that's how it's done, people. I had despaired of getting any real deli up here, but Jason knows his biz. I asked if he could make an Italian combo, and he said he could make whatever I want. After seeing this beauty of a sandwich...thinly sliced meats piled high, properly garnished and assembled...I'm a believer. After tasting it, I think I'm gonna be a regular. I'm coming back soon to find out if he can make a real bacon egg and cheese, in which case I'm not sure if I ever need to go back to Brooklyn (although I really would like to someday). Oh, and it's not just a sandwich spot.
