We spent our days laughing, bonding, and trying new things--ziplining through the jungle, ATVing through forests and shallow rivers, and even swimming half a mile through a breathtaking cenote. Further learned that for persons born in China "territories." ie, Hong Kong and Taiwan, the visa application process is much more complicated. Googling China Visa applications resulted in a lot of information. Too much information, in fact, that caused me to think that the process may be futile. Indeed, a HK-born friend who underwent the process decided to cancel her China trip because of these complications and hassles. I was confused and dismayed. Wife suggested I contact our decade-long travel agent, Eva Ho of LL Travel in Milpitas. I didn't realize they provide this service. Since her office is nearby, I decided to do it the old-fashion way and meet with her in person, without going through all the back & forth of texts and emails. So glad I did. Explained to her my situation and she guided me to locate documents that she would need to optimally prepare our Applications. Eva made copies in her office, took a photo of me (I submitted my wife's via email, following her guidance for photo-taking), started filling out our online applications, and took possession of our USA Passports. That was a Tuesday afternoon. A week later, on a Friday, I had our Passports back in hand, containing 10-year China Visas, when I picked them up at her Milpitas office. Took 7 business days. In fact, the visas, as stamped, were issued in exactly one week. The beauty of this smooth & quick process: -- White-glove treatment from start to finish -- All inclusive service: filling application, taking photos, copying, etc. -- L L Travel office is conveniently located in central Milpitas, across from Taiwan Culture Center -- Eliminated all the stress and worry of process -- Eliminated the need to make two trips into China San Francisco - Consulate (eats up more than half a day each) -- Eliminated the expense and risk of sending Passports through mail/Fedex (if through other non-local Visa Service provider) -- Leverage visa expertise of a person who has done the process countless times -- Visa application may be submitted before the 90 days of a China trip -- Eva & Julie speak English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Vietnamese. They also handle Vietnam visas -- Fee for service + China Visa is a very reasonable $300 (Visa fee is $140 alone). Other online place/s charge as high as $632 + Fedex fees -- Lesson: sometimes it's best not to do it ourselves online. Pay for the guidance/service of an expert. She handled the passport renewal, took her photo, and told us she'd notify us when everything was ready. I picked up the passport when told it was ready, but Julie wasn't there. Another staff member handed it to me after making a copy, and we trusted that everything was complete. Jenny didn't find out until she was at the airport for a red‑eye flight that the visa was never placed in her passport. She was nearly denied boarding and had to apply for an emergency visa on the spot. It was incredibly stressful and cost us extra money due to their error. When she called Julie afterward, LL Travel refused to reimburse her and claimed they tried to contact her. We were never notified ahead of time that the visa was missing or needed to be picked up separately. Mistakes happen--but refusing to take responsibility is unacceptable. This was careless handling of important travel documents, and their response showed a lack of accountability. I would not trust LL Travel again. Proceed with caution.

After hours of researching fares online, using the various discount sites (Travelocity, Priceline, Expedia, and the other guys) I went to AMEX and even AAA, as I am members of both. Yeah, they were fine, but I was wasting hours of my time NOT getting answers to how to make my trip smooth and effortless. I decided to try a travel agent for once in my life. I love flying: I hate the hassles of the airport. It just gets worse every year. I wanted to see if a pro could "just do everything for me and get me on the plane without the lines and hassle." I needed to book a flight to Costa Rica. I knew where I was going to stay, and when I wanted to go (etc.). The problem was that I had options of which airports, which airlines, and times (not just the $ amount). Look, if you aren't 17 anymore, you might want to think about your travel experience. How fun is it--or how much of a drag is it to get to the airport, stand in line, stand in another line, get frisked by TSA, and forget customs! Ugh! * * * All of this magically went away! * * * I called Candace. I said "I know where I want to go (blah blah blah) and she actually listened to me tell her what I wanted to do. She surprised me by finding me a BETTER airline than I had found in several hours. She guided me though the TSA pre-check, CLEAR, and Global Entry processes. She even sent me highly detailed information (with pictures!) of what I can take on the plane and how to avoid hassles with bring a laptop, iPad, and extra battery packs. She changed my trip from a hassle of questions to a dead-simple "show up, go here . . . they will escort you to the front of the line, where you will be put in the front of the next line, and all you have to do is get on the plane and enjoy your trip." She even helped me figure out how and when to order a tasty meal (for free) on the plane before I went to the airport. Just in case you don't know, one of your biggest hassles flying are the airports you have to layover in. They are not all the same, and most have special lounges you can hang out in to make your "airport experience" infinitely more fun (and less stressful). If you are planning a trip, you need to talk to Candace. Her fee was so cheap ($550 LESS than other TAs I had considered) that I am embarrassed to say here. But the treatment I had was first class. On my first phone call we got everything cleared up and set in motion. And she kept track of my progress over the time as well. I am a fan for life. No more stressing myself out trying to save a buck flying. It is worth three times the price to have a REAL travel agent do the hard work for you, so you can just pop in to the airport and breeze through all of the lines while everyone else is surly and tired of waiting. I feel bad for anyone who travels like that. There is a better way, and that is why I am writing this review.

I also said no we were not. She then said "how did you hear about us?" The tone on this question sounded like she was surprised we were able to reach them without having been referred. She then said "okay to be honest with you a client who we've never worked with and also does not know anyone who has worked with us I don't think we can take on a brand new client right now we have been in business x years and this would probably not be possible." This one was a little surprising since I was planning this a year in advance. She then said "I assume you have never worked with a travel agent before" to which I said that I have actually several times before. This is when I got upset. She said she would "send me an email for me to send dates and maybe go from there" and I responded that I was not interested in working with their business and expressed my displeasure with the interaction. Might sound dramatic but I think this was the worst interaction I have ever had with a local business. It's a shame because I was planning to give them a significant amount of business only to be turned away because of her ego. Hopefully all of you have a better experience.
