If you are a local restaurant owner, local chef, a home cook, or simply a food aficionado, Specialty Foods of San Diego is definitely a place one has to get to know. In addition to all the abundance of local great produce, they also offer a melee of herb and spices, an impressive line-up of cheeses and dairy products, cured meats and fresh prime meats, wholesome breads, and common place pantry items like sugar and flour etc. Three things that really impressed me during my visit was the beautiful peppers and mushrooms that they offer. The poblano peppers were outstanding and aching to be roasted and stuffed, and the Toro de Oro yellow peppers were glistening with color ready to be tossed in one's favorite salad or dish. Other items that stood out were all the leafy greens, selection of fresh berries, outstanding root vegetables, and a huge bag of ready peeled garlic! The staff members were all very welcoming and friendly. I liked that they asked how I was and if I needed any help locating an item.

My family wanted to take me to specialty produce why? Because it's just a cool place to find unusual and fresh produce. When you get there you must sign up and grab a pair of rubber gloves. I started wandering around the store got a few bags and started gathering some produce. They had everything from vintage sodas, truffles. Oils, spices, bread. They had a whole cooler with caviar and truffles. It's definitely worth it to go and look around. You can look online and see what the current produce they have before going.

If you use Google maps to find this place, you might be confused to where the entrance is. It took me to the parking space by the green walls and I walked around to and saw a couple of doors (for employees and they were locked) and a "garage" looking entrance but it was closed. I thought hmm perhaps they decided to close early today (It was a Sunday, 30 min to closing time), so I left. The second time, I found the same doors were still locked. Strange. It's in the middle of the day, no reason for them to close early. Luckily I found someone to point me to the entrance. Here's the entrance: cross streets of Estudillo St and Hancock St! I had fun finding the entrance. Apart from a little hide and seek, this store is a gem! You have to sign up and wear gloves before going into the warehouse but all the produce in there seems so fresh. Love the variety of vegetables and fruits that I can get in here. I never knew this place existed until now.

So cool that this is open to the public, we visited while on vacation this weekend and we flew home with a suitcase full of new citrus we've never tried before

Truly a gem of a place. Of course, a lot of the produce and items sold are expensive--but the quality and freshness of everything is apparent. The QR code wall of all produce available is incredible, sooo well done and unique to what I have experienced in other specialty stores. A lot of the QR codes didn't actually work for me, and I'm not sure why, but ensuring those are all functional would be helpful as I was curious about a lot of produce they have available and love the feature. For certain items without a listed price, there's a scanner/look-up device you can use to find out. I bought the buzz button edible flowers for cocktails and they were cheaper than buying them from Amazon or various online stores. About ~$17.50 for a pack of 50. The store is overall so enjoyable to walk through and the set-up is pleasing. The workers are also lovely and helpful. Excited to come here more for my specialty items.

I absolutely love this grocery store. Well it's more of a warehouse for produce, the quality and organization is well thought out. Prices are hard to find but they have QR codes and a mini pad to look up. Definitely come here if you want great quality produce or meats! (Eyeing the whole 4lb guanciale!!) The prices are extremely reasonable too, expected to be more expensive for the quality. But definitely good!! Customer service here is amazing as well!

We went again to shop for produce and had another stellar experience. The organic produce is exemplary and plentiful. More edible flowers than any where I have ever seen in market! So many varieties of herbs and micro greens. The squash blossoms were huge and beautiful. Again we purchased osetra caviar at 50% what most gourmet markets charge! The staff are all knowledgeable and eager to help. We are so lucky it is just 10 minutes from our house!

Ths place has been on my list since I see them at the farmers markets. Im considering the subscription produce box, but have not been able to commit as I am not sure I would use all the items provided. Coming to the store allowed me to pick what I knew I would eat. They have so many fresh produce options and new or exotic options that you won't see in the regular grocery store. I didn't realize they also sell edible flowers so noted for next time I want to do baking or cocktails with them. Parking can be a strain, but worth waiting/driving around. Highly recommend to visit the store of not wanting to commit to a subscription box.

Stumbled into a temple of flavor masquerading as a produce distribution center just off the 5. I'd seen their trucks before--idling outside restaurants that actually give a damn--but had no idea what was hiding behind those walls. A cooking demo dragged me into the building, but we were early, and that gave me time to wander. Inside? Not your average market. Not even close. This place is a fever dream for anyone who worships at the altar of food. Piles of strange and beautiful produce--some I knew, most I didn't--nuts, beans, cheeses that whispered stories from far-off places. It wasn't sterile or curated to death. It was raw, real, and humming with possibility. This wasn't about shopping. This was about being inspired. About stumbling across a knobby, alien-looking root and suddenly needing to turn it into dinner. It made you want to cook. To feed people. To create something that makes someone's eyes go wide with surprise and pleasure. I didn't have nearly enough time. But places like this remind you why food matters. Why it's worth the effort. Why we bother.

They consistently carry some of the best-quality produce currently available from San Diego and the surrounding areas, thoughtfully curated with real care. Misses are rare, and when something isn't right, they always make it right. What really sets this place apart is the knowledgeable team. They can tell you not just what something is, but where it's from, why it's special, and even how best to prepare it if it's new to you. They know which watermelon varietals are sweetest (and why), which tomatoes are best for different uses, and how to guide you toward the best choice of the day. We also appreciate the simplicity of the space. It's clear the focus is on quality produce rather than unnecessary overhead or décor that doesn't add to flavor or nutrition. We come in knowing our weekly staples, and we always look forward to discovering a surprise treat or seasonal treasure to add to the basket. We recently lived in Spain for a year and deeply miss the fruterías found on every corner, places that genuinely support daily health and well-being. In the U.S., truly good produce can be harder to find, with so much emphasis on mass production and appearance over flavor and nutrition. The Fruit Stand comes as close as we've found to that European produce experience. We're grateful this place exists and grateful for the care they put into what they offer. Yes, you get to walk into a cooler filled with great produce. In addition, to the impressive collection of organic mushroom inside the cooler, there was also some beautiful golden beets, white turnips, rainbow chard, and a variety of green beans and pods. The Anaheim peppers were impressive. They were a great green and unusually plump and were reasonably priced at $1.51 per pound. The purple potatoes were $1.30 per pound, and the mushrooms were I believe $2.32 lbs, all fair enough and quite reasonable for organic produce.
