There's a reason I've been training at Karate World for over 12 years (and I'm far from the only…read moreone!). Actually, there are many reasons. First, Master Jeff Dunn is the most inspiring person I have ever met. He is a true master of his craft, and it's very clear that he is passionate about teaching people. We don't just learn martial arts, we learn life lessons. Having said that, we certainly do learn martial arts! The school offers Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do, Thai Kickboxing and cardio kickboxing. Once you achieve your black belt, you begin to learn another style, Moo Duk Kwon. One of the major reasons so many of us are long-timers is because there is always something new to learn. All of the classes are high-energy! We train with music, which helps motivate us to keep moving. Our instructors are top-notch. Again, having trained under Master Dunn, they are knowledgeable, energetic, passionate and caring. Another great feature of the school is that it is family-oriented. I originally began training with my six year old son (he just went off to college). Classes are by belt level, not age group. (The family that kicks together sticks together). However, certain exercises are separated by age groups. Thai Kickboxing, on the other hand, is adults only. It is an incredible workout. We don't hit people, we hit and kick bags. (Sparring is offered but not mandatory). It's a little easier on the joints, and the moves are not as complex. It's still a lot of fun! Cardio kickboxing is a good alternative if you don't want to learn formal moves but you want a high-energy aerobic workout (with body sculpting at the end of most classes). One last thing - the place is very large, with three separate rooms. Scheduling is pretty flexible - there are some classes offered 7-days a week. It's clean and bright - very inviting. Try it - you'll get hooked, and you'll always feel welcome at Karate World!

Whenever I talk to friends with kids, I always encourage them to try karate because it is entirely responsible for how great I turned out :) Being confident in your ability to defend yourself is such a potent ingredient for self-assuredness later on in life, and the philosophical lessons within the practice are such good lessons for kids: hard work, discipline, steeling your nerves for competition, trust and respect when working with other people... Not knowing if my son would even like the classes, I was a bit hesitant to take it on (it's not cheap). Students go 2-3 times a week which, at this age (my son is 4.5), feels like a lot and limits him from trying other things. But, they had a one-month trial that felt reasonable and he ended up LOVING his classes (we added a 3-month membership on in hopes he will continue to stick with it). I do wish there was a once a week class option (at half the price), but this seems to be standard practice, so we're giving it a shot. As for the instructors, they are absolutely amazing with the kids. You can tell they are genuinely having fun. They have fair/reasonable expectations for the students in terms of focus and participation, but they are firm and make clear what is expected. There are almost as many girls as boys in the classes and they encourage everyone equally. They know how to change the class up and make it fun. I feel my son is in a good place based on his enthusiasm and reactions during class. Each class has a similar structure, but different practices and my kid is really enjoying them. I use his belt promotion checklist to my advantage! I was concerned with the MMA connection that the class would be ran by a bunch of meat heads teaching kids to fight, but it's nothing like that...very friendly, positive environment that I am happy to continue exploring.

Primarily FFKK caters to the kids, teaching them karate and having summer programs, after-school programs, plus some classes where the parents and kids train together. But four days a week at 7:30pm the adults attend kickboxing/muy thai classes for an hour. They also sell intro gloves, leg gear, head gear and shirts, hoodies and a duffel to put it all in. They strictly prefer that all wear the shirts when they train. The black-belt trainer, Jerry is a great guy, patient, kind, able to train all levels at once. He makes sure your form is good, makes sure folks don't get hurt, and is very flexible with your decision to spar when you get to a certain level. There are sessions just for testing, and folks who perform what they've learned get a belt. Another black-belt trainer there, X, is a good guy too. He co-trains with Jerry and always puts an effort in and boosts up folk's confidence when they feel they aren't quite getting the drills. He challenges folks without pushing too hard beyond the scope of what they are capable of, and is genuinely respectful of everyone at all levels. Part of what keeps me going back is training with them, and actually learning to kickbox, not just do HIIT training for a Hot Gurl Summer. They respect the sport, and they help you to enjoy training and learning. I wasn't good at holding mitts or pads when I'm paired up, because I never had to in boxing. When we do drills we pair up and learn from each other. Folks learn how a punch or kick feels so they know at what speed or force to do it themselves. Yet no one walks out of there looking to fight anyone. They just feel they've learned enough to protect themselves and avoid combat confrontation. And they make new friends. The place is clean, bright, organized, not always cool, but you're gonna sweat hard anyway, so ventilation and a decent temperature is good enough. The heavy bags are quality, the pads well kept, and there are snacks and beverages should you need em. Seating at the front is great for anyone having to wait for you, or to put your gear or shoes, although they do have cubbies for that too. There always seems to be package deal pricing, and the prices are reasonable. Check em out and then go kick something.
