My PT experience was not something I was looking forward to post-op, but it is genuinely the highlight of my week whenever I go to SPEAR. Khawlah has been so instrumental in my recovery from my hip arthroscopy. She is so knowledgeable about the joint and my recovery, and encourages me while also listening to my body. All the techs there are great as well and it's honestly just a really good time whenever I go in. The facility is spotless and they play music and there's a general sense of positivity and recovery there which I think is so important for something like PT (that you kind of don't want to do). When I started at Spear, I was in pain and demoralized after spending 6 unproductive weeks with another PT provider for bursitis in my left shoulder. Luckily, I was matched with the outstanding Sabrina Philippe. She took the time to thoroughly evaluate my shoulder strength, gave me a manageable at-home program, and created challenging and diverse workouts which I completed at Spear, under her watchful eye. I found Sabrina to be resourceful and incredibly knowledgeable, reflective of her wide experience in the field. The PT I saw at Spear was fine. However, their billing department/front desk staff has poor management. I got a surprise bill months after I stopped going. The statement was dated for a date in which I had already paid but their billing department claimed it was for a service for a month before the date listed. Basically, their statement was incorrect. They asserted that the front desk forgot to charge for the first service so my co-pays were always a "day behind". They issued the wrong billing statement and the front desk screwed up. read more

TL;DR Beware of deceptive billing. Also I suspect many reviews here are fake or planted because no establishment should have 5-star Yelp review, even if it's a three Michelin star restaurant. I came here in Jan, knowing it was out of network for my insurance. The billing person specifically explained to me that I only had to pay $60 for the first two sessions. Then I could have 10 sessions or continue treatment for 30 days, whichever came first, before I needed a script from my PCP. It sounded suspicious but I was like, fine, I'd try it out. I came back for a few sessions. After 1-2 months I got a bunch of mail from my insurance, first claiming I owed Spear money, then that didn't owe money, then that I owed money again. And now I just got a bill from Spear for $458 for the first two sessions. This is ridiculous since I already paid $60 for each session and they billed insurance $99 for both. There's no way I would ever agree to paying $458 for the service I received during 2 sessions. Unfortunately this is the healthcare landscape in America but I'm still incensed every time. read more

If I could give zero stars then I would. This is a long post but I feel it is my duty to warn others about my experience with Spear Physical Therapy's fraudulent billing practices. I was treated at Spear for approx 3 months after experiencing two serious foot injuries that left me in orthopedic boots for months. My PT, Dana, was actually amazing and I really enjoyed the experience working with her. However, the major problem is that Spear's admins at the front desk and their internal billing department are completely dysfunctional; their billing practices are unethical, possibly illegal as well. After leaving this review on Yelp, I will also attempt to contact Spear's CFO as well as file a complaint with the NY State Medical Board for fraudulent billing. My orthopedist recommended me to Spear following two serious foot injuries. I was told by my PT and by the front desk staff that while they worked with my insurance company, the did not work with my exact program but there was no problem and they will still honor my insurance. They further explained that all I needed to do was pay my $25 copay and then bring Spear my insurance reimbursement checks since they would be made out to my name. Spear would then cash the checks and take care of everything. I was in so much pain with my foot injuries that I thought this arrangement would be perfect. For months I was going into Spear 2 or 3 times a week, paying my $25 for each visit and passing along checks as they came in. Everything seemed to be going great until one day I received a $4000+ bill from Spear that did not factor in a single insurance check that I had dropped off. I will still getting PT at this point and I took the bill into Spear and spoke with the front desk admin (young white woman in her 20s with brown hair) who said there was clearly a mistake and she would speak with billing. Weeks went by and I got another strangely large bill - again, I spoke with the same front desk admin who said she would talk to billing and take care of it. Once the third bill came and clearly nothing had been resolved, I felt I could no longer trust Spear. I wrote a detailed email to my PT explaining that I couldn't finish my therapy until the billing issue was resolved. Fast forward to almost 10 months later and there is still no resolution or response from Spear. Spear outsources their billing to WebPT and there is a wonderful woman working there who is trying to help me resolve the issue and she confirmed that although Spear cashed the insurance checks that I brought in, there is no record of them in their system. Spear just keep sending me very pricey medical bills with threatening language. I guess they are hoping to get paid twice? Or maybe they are incompetent? Either way, their billing practices are fraudulent and unacceptable. I'm sharing my story because I know that when you're in physical pain you just want someone to help you get better and on the surface Spear seems like a place you can trust. But be forewarned - avoid Spear Physical Therapy at all costs unless you want to end up in the same mess. read more

This is my second time receiving PT at a NYC Spear location and I'm very satisfied with my progress in working with Naeema, who's knowledgeable, friendly, and patient when you're not 100% flawless with how you do the exercises. Over the course of a year and several months, I found myself increasingly having difficulty walking. Whether it was commuting to work or running errands, I was literally stumbling over my own feet 10-20 times a day. I began working with Dr. Dana Ballis at the start of the COVID-19 lockdown. It is important for the patient to understand the root cause of the issue. They also design routines and exercises that are specific for each person. A few months ago I started experiencing pain in my right elbow and wrist. After I took 3 weeks off from the gym, the pain did not subside. I found my way to Spear Physical Therapy by way of some glowing reviews online. Today was my last session, and I am so happy to say I am pain free. I started at the beginning of October, and today is December 14th. Josh and the rest of the staff are really exceptional. I am back to my old routine, armed with new knowledge about how important stretching and proper form are for weight training. It's a very warm atmosphere. Everyone is really great at what they do. I've had a great experience rehabbing my unstable shoulder at this SPEAR location. I have Justin as my PT. Him and the rest of the staff are very friendly, attentive, and intelligent. I was doing PT here for a few months before it became clear that I would need surgery. When it came to this point they recommended a great surgeon (Dr. Friedman) with whom they work closely with. SPEAR PT Pine Street is a great clinic, with a fantastic facility and incredibly friendly and helpful staff. The space is huge (they use the La Palaestra gym), with lots of equipment to use. All of the PTs and techs at the clinic are friendly and accommodative, and it is very easy to talk to them. Justin Acquino is a fantastic PT. This is the second time that I've worked with him (first time is at the Midtown East location) and it has been a great experience. Justin listens to your needs, and adjusts the workouts/rehab so that it will suit you. He also keeps the workouts challenging but interesting at the same time. I tore my PCL but with Justin's help I was able to get back to 100% in no time. He also makes sure to check in with you constantly about how you feel, so that you're never pushed to the point that you're going to get injured further. If I get injured again in the future, Justin will definitely be the first person I contact. read more

After a disc injury in my lower back, I began PT with Josh Rieders at SPEAR. I was extremely frustrated with the amount of pain at the beginning, but Josh and his team gave me the best care and within a couple months I was feeling much better. I believe that the PT team at SPEAR is the best out there. They are knowledgeable, up-to-date with the latest PT research, and very encouraging when you're not feeling your best. Additionally, the facility is immaculate. I tell my friends that SPEAR is like the Equinox of PT! Although I hope I don't need any PT in the future, SPEAR will be my first choice if I do...and thanks to the numerous locations around the city, I know there will always be an office nearby. I woke up one morning with a serious pain in my neck. I called SPEAR and they got me in within 90 minutes. Austin immediately diagnosed it as a muscle spasm. Austin was very helpful in the moment helping me get through the pain and suggested I come back a couple days letter to help me with some preventative exercises. After a lifetime of highly competitive athletics, D1 and international competition my right shoulder had enough, I was in constant pain. I had a hard time lifting my arm past my shoulder, putting on jacket or dress shirt, at 36 years old this shouldn't be the case. I had a lingering incomplete rotator cuff tear that I did not want to repair surgically, Dr. Rieders, with his extensive knowledge and a detailed evaluation process created a specific treatment program to fit my needs.
