I think it's great that they have this store that sells thrift goods and it looks like to benefit SPCA and animals. But I'll be honest, I didn't see much of value, at least for me. I didn't see a ton of people buying stuff. But I did see a lot of people shopping, so that implies repeat visitors so they must have treasures here from time to time. read more

Found the cutest clothing and pet accessories here this weekend. Such a great store and serving a great and much needed cause. Store is clean and well organized. Prices were reasonable and the employees and volunteers were kind and helpful. There are four wonderful thrift stores all right next to each other so it's a great spot to spend a few hours and help make a big difference in the lives of fellow humans and animals alike. I have made several purchases here in the past. Today we arrived 7 minutes before 4pm and the closed sign was up. I opened the door and asked if we could look , as the store was going to be closed for the next several days and there were 2 items we were interested in from the window. I pointed out that it wasn't yet 4 . Cashier said abruptly,"we are closed. When I pointed out the time she said " we are trying to get out of here," in a tone that was clear she didn't care about anything but herself. I tried to explain that we understood but could make the purchase before 4 and she turned back to the other volunteer, continued her conversation and just used her hand to wave goodbye in a totally dismissive way. I won't shop there in the future, and it looks like from the reviews this is par for the course. Rude employees or volunteers are not serving your mission. read more

Once again, this was a favorite place of mine before they decided to go bougie. This is a hit and miss. They have some things so dramatically over priced that you could probably get them at Nordstrom for less, but then again, you can find some things at a decent price. I don't quite understand their strategy, but it's worth a shot up here and of course, I am very much in favor of their mission of helping animals. So I don't mind spending a little money here. We love the SPCA benefit store. Lots of high clothing, nic nacks, furniture, kitchen supplies and all sorts of things for your pets. All pets are welcome! Water bowls and treats available for dogs. It's so great that all the proceeds go to our local SPCA. I happily spend more shopping here knowing that. read more

Had attended an outdoor antique fair down the road and stopped in the shopping center to grab a bite of lunch. We saw the SPCA shop and decided to head in to check it out as we are all animal lovers. What a shop! Lovely employees, great array of merchandise. From all kinds of housewares and animal goods such as treats and small kennels. There were lovely clothes, lots of cd's and books and furniture! I spied a chair that reminded me of my grandma. As it turns out, many things in the shop were on sale 50% off. The chair I liked was $30! I purchased it and agreed to come back and pick it up on Monday. I was able to stop by the next day. Again great customer service. I love supporting dogs... with that said, I didn't like the vibe at this benefit store. The ladies there are snobby . Old Caucasian ladies seemed to be greeted kindly. Others were like martians. The lady at the register wasn't friendly at all. One of my items wasn't priced. When I politely asked how much my item was she snapped at me and said "all items should be priced" well duh lady, why would I waste my breath and ask if there was a price tag on my item? Please -people that work at the benefit store... you're there to help raise money for the dogs. You're volunteering as a customer service person. If you have a bias or don't like to be around people, please find somewhere else to spend your time and not make other people miserable. As far as the store, it seemed as organized as it could be,less missing price tags here and there. They sold a few things that were clearly broken or not working which I found pretty misleading. Used clothing were a priced a little high compared to other thrift stores, but its for the doggies! And hopefully not for administrative costs. read more

Dear SPCA Benefit Shop, After looking everywhere on the peninsula for a wedding dress I liked, I was becoming disheartened with my choices. Thankfully, I saw your ad on Craigslist showing a beautiful, brand NEW wedding dress with tags still attached, for the unheard of price of just $25! I thought to myself, "if I go down there, and this dress HAPPENS to be the right size, that would be a miracle." I visited the SPCA Benefit Shop the next day to see the dress, and was surprised to find they actually had several wedding dresses (cleaned and boxed and pre-worn). I tried on the dress in their nice fitting rooms, and oh my goodness, it FIT!! Snugly, but it fit!! And the length was not too terribly long for me! I was ecstatic! It was gorgeous! Not ONE flaw! And the tags were still attached! The entire staff of the shop was so helpful in getting me zipped and giving their encouraging input about the look and fit. I bought the dress (of course!) and extended my gratitude to the shop's volunteer staff. We had our wedding at Lover's Point, and this wonderful, beautiful dress helped me feel like a princess! I just can't thank the SPCA Benefit Shop enough. You helped make our wedding beautiful, and we didn't have to break the bank! This is one of those thrift stores I have to visit each time I travel back to CA. Dog friendly and proceeds go to a great cause. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They carry a wide variety of items and all seem to be in pretty good shape. The store is laid out in such a way that it is easy to shop - not overcrowded with overstuffed racks and easy to get around. Prices seem to be reasonable especially considering this is Carmel. I usually tend to find a couple items each time I stop in and this last visit was no exception. I managed to find three rings I liked quite a bit and all fit perfectly. I liked the style of them (very vintage) and thought I was buying some very nice costume jewelry considering the price I was paying for them. Imagine my surprise when I discovered upon closer inspection at home that two of my rings were 14K gold and one was sterling. Great deal! read more

Every time I set foot in this store, I buy something. Even if it is just a few tennis balls for my dog. I have bought perfect antique hair clips, a beautiful platter... And we will always come back. I have been wanting to visit this thrift store in the BarnYard Shopping Center for quite some time. SPCA for Monterey County Benefit Shop was one of the larger of the thrift stores in the BarnYard Shopping Center. There is the usual offering of clothing, shoes, furniture, collectibles, jewelry, and quality items. I think when other reviewers complain about the higher costs what you may not realize that these type of "thrift stores" or "resale shops" edit many of the donations so there is not the junk piles that you may find at other types of stores. The lay out was easy to navigate no clutter with each section clearly marked. When we entered the store we were greeted in a friendly manner. There were many people in the store during a Monday afternoon. As we browsed I took note of the nice merchandise but as with thrift store hunting it can be hit or miss but for me the thrill is in the hunt. My husband spotted these beautiful mid century modern chairs that were made in Yugoslavia. We did some investigation online and found them to be quite the find commanding prices between $ 75.00 to $ 250.00 and upwards per chair. The price we paid? Well it can't be beat at $ 22.00 for BOTH chairs SOLD! The chairs are in beautiful condition too! SCORE! But where there is the joy of the find there can be heartbreak. I saw these prints that I was so excited about but alas the price was $ 250.00 way out of my budget! I might call them to inquire when their next 50% off sale might be. Apparently they have a email list where they can inform you of such upcoming sales! I neglected to put myself on the list but I should have. Lovely ladies volunteer here and they love their job, they are so cute and passionate and very helpful! I went in to find wooden tennis rackets.. no luck this time but I will be back very soon. This is the most well decorated (with the goods they are selling) thrift store that I have ever been to. They even high a special little corner room for highend woman's apparel. Fun treasures to be found! This is my favorite in this shopping center and I've always happened upon a few things I must have. Last month I bought a nice antique drop leaf side table for $60. I went to this shop after reading an article about thrift shops in the AAA magazine.. The quality of merchandise was better than a lot of thrift shops I've been to (i.e. not stained, torn, etc.). I found the clothing to be targeted toward an older, more professional crowd but none the less found a very nice Ralph Lauren sweater for $10. The prices are a bit high. I saw several other things that were nice but couldn't imagine spending the money...it is a thrift store after all. I'll be back and look forward to finding some other treasures. Maybe by then the prices will be a little cheaper. (hint, hint) read more

I dropped off two stray kitties at the SPCA in Monterey because they were little and I thought the SPCA would provide better care than what we could. I was so WRONG! The SPCA made it sound like they would take care of them in their nursery or find them a foster home, unless the county "wanted them." They never said that the HAVE to give the kitties to the county and that the county euthanizes them, but when I called to check on the kitties their story changed. They were very non-transparent about the whole process because they want to appear like the rescue and protect animals, but they don't. I expressly requested that if they couldn't find a place for them, to please call me back and I would take them and try to care for them even though I don't know how. They didn't do that. They made it sound like they would take care of them, but they didn't, yet they took our donation. The SPCA LIES!! If you don't want a stray kitty to get euthanized, take care of it yourself. The SPCA does NOT rescue and protect all animals. They are not to be trusted. Lesson learned the hard way. read more

I absolutely love this shop! I usually come here just for their books, which are $1 for hardcovers and .25 for paperbacks. Can't beat that! Plus half of the books look hardly used!
