They recently did the place up and expanded into the premises next door; now they have a shiny new deli and a comfy sit-down/cafe area. My only real issue with this place is that I have gone in there a number of times looking for something only to find that they have run out or just don't stock it. For example. they sell hotdogs but they don't stock hotdog buns at all.

Their deli is very impressive, their wraps, sandwiches, salads are very fresh and good value. They also make fresh pizzas, but I haven't tried them yet. They have an ATM at the back of the store, but this is often out of service, but there is an outdoor ATM just up the road a little (a minute's walk or less). They've got groceries, off-license, newspapers/magazines, lottery, almost anything you could want, but I wouldn't do a full weekly shop here! They are open 24 hours, which adds a star for me!

On the outside the shop looks like it has been there for years and has that chaotic and bedraggled look of a place that has simply evolved into what it is through eons of additions. The truth is much more interesting. There has been a shop in DL for years called Alexes - the lucky lotto shop- run by a guy named John Highland. John lived and breathed the business to the degree where it was open 24 hours a day and I'll swear he was there 22 of those hours. Alexes is still there but john sold up a few years back, then missed the biz I guess because he opened this place - though he's taking it easier these days, it's only open 21 hours a day... seriously. The selection of papers and magazines is truly astonishing, as indeed it the shops owner!

It also has a deli counter and a hot food counter at the back. It also has a smoothie counter. There is an ATM machine in store. They always have their special offers and discounted items on display as you walk in the door. The layout is quite spacious and the staff are mostly very friendly. Management seem a bit grumpy though! The floor staff are very friendly though. It is a bit pricey compared to supermarkets but a very convenient alternative to busy supermarkets, as it stocks almost everything you will need.

There's a machine serving Insomnia coffee, which doesn't taste half bad for a button machine, though is reasonably pricey at €2 a pop... They have the usual vast selection of sweet treats and savoury nibbles, and a shelf of staple cupboard items for the offices and residents on campus, like instant coffee and packets of dried pasta. The best reason to visit this Spar though is to pick up a half-price newspaper.

If not that, I'd have walked to next shop don't matter how far. I actually remembered my good acquaintance's words - spar is for rich people, buddy. It kind of makes you feel like your actually supporting something or someone! kinda like the ol "buy irish" thing I suppose! Anywho my one negative for this shop and i suppose its not there fault really but this is one of those newsagants that always has some kid hanging around outside asking "here! missus! will ye buy us a pack a smokes in da shop will ya?" why do these kids pick on me? Do i just look gullible or something? I dont agree with under age smoking why will i support there habit! i often feel like going in to the shop to warn the worker in there but then i always fear that i will have some little kid with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth ready to hassle me when i come back out if i do.... damn kids ruining my newspoint experience!

I dropped into the Insomnia for a coffee today, just as an excuse to get out of the office today. I…read morehad gone in with the idea of ordering a latte but I saw their adds for Autumn themed hot chocolates and the raspberry and honey one grabbed my eye. I really enjoyed it! So it's a hot chocolate with a "shot" of honey served in a large white mug with cold cream on top and dried raspberry's sprinkled on top with a few flakes of chocolate. It really looks the part. So its an odd experience taking the first sip as your lips are dipped in the very cold whipped cream and the dried raspberry's sit under your noise so it is all you can smell and when you drink you get the heat and taste of the honey sweetened hot chocolate. So it's a real miss match of temperatures and tastes which is odd at first but it works. After drinking about a quarter I decided to mix all the cream and berry's into drink which again was nice as the raspberry's swell up in the chocolate and float to the top. Anyway it may not be everyone's cup of tea or cup of hot chocolate as the case might be but I liked it and would recommend you at least try it once. Yummy!!

This a nice shop with a spacious, clean and bright interior…read more I was in Ballsbridge the day of the Dublin Marathon and with the spectating really taking its tole I wandered in here. Avoiding the salads, I made my way to the hot deli counter and paused for thought. A very pleasant lady asked me what I would like and, in accordance with my wishes, made me a terrifically unhealthy sandwich. I picked up a cup of coffee and took perch on the complementary seats outside where I could still see the marathon progressing. Enjoying my juicy lunch I eased my conscience saying "Sure maybe I'll run it next year." Good shop though, and a welcome addition to The Oval building.
