when i heard this is "a michael levine salon" i immediately linked it to professionalism. after my experience, my impression of anything linked to "michael levine" has changed 180 degrees. He is one egotistic man who speaks as if he totally knows what he's doing, but when it comes down to it, he lacks the business knowledge in how to serve customers. He may be successful with hair, but failing the service aspect would impede his successful rate for sure. When I was there to get my haircut, another female was sitting next to me and Michael Levine happened to be there. I could not believe he literally said "great job, looking good...but then again, she walked in with great hair already". WOW. I stepped through the doors with a terrible haircut (which is the reason why I chose to try this salon - in hopes that "a michael levine salon" would be highly trained enough to save my hair), which in the end, i walked out with bad hair still. Coming in with great hair and walking out with great hair is so surprise - it is expected. This in no way shows that it was due to the service at the salon. Coming in with horrible hair and walking out with great hair - that now really puts your skills to the test and proves that your salon is really something. Unfortunately, this space salon "a michael levine salon" disappointed me as even the hairstylist didn't think my hair look good at the end. Not to mention that she showed signs of some frustration throughout the process, and made me felt that I was giving her trouble because I walked in with such bad hair for her. ps. During my couple hours there, Michael Levine was walking around his salon with a starbucks in hand, frequently checking himself in the mirror and fixing his hair on the roof of his head........it's understandable, but when you're the owner, it would be much better if you put your attention to clients in your salon instead of on your appearance during business hours. read more

never gonna go back cz his hairdressers are very poorly trained.....at least Brae was. Now I get that she's one of the stylists who charges the lowest from $35 but I could have easily found a more skillful stylist for 35 bucks among the MANY hair salons in that area. for a quick haircut, I for one, don't feel comfortable giving out my personal info which they wanted me to fill out on this plastic board asking my addy andd phone.. ------- *edit* sorry, but I would like to add that this is not a fake review. I guess I needed to add more details to my original review though. That's right, Brae works on Tuesdays, but not everyone she has worked on before was someone you know. I was actually a "hair model" (which was on a Tuesday in fact) and i happened to have Brae. Then afterwards, I looked up how much her skills are worth, which was why I stated the $35. Hope this clarifies that I am a real reviewer. As to tracking my name in your salon's record, I was not obligated to provide my personal info to your salon just for a haircut. As I mentioned in the earlier review, I was handed a plastic board to fill out address and phone etc...which I already clearly stated I don't like to give out personal info. So I'm sorry you had to go through the list in your salon....if that is the purpose of taking people's info, btw. I'm not trying to hurt her or your business - now you get me wondering if the "5 stars" posts were done by your own people. That's not the point of Yelp. I'm not trying to attack anyone, just want to let customers know what to expect before they invest their money into a service. Please do not assume that I am a male because my name is Mike. It is pronunciation for my name in Japanese - pronounced as Mi-ke. I am a female. Never in my review did I mention my sex . Please don't judge me on my name because I didn't give the salon a gd review:( read more

I would not even rate this 1 start if Yelp would allow me to. It is the worst salon I have ever been to. Let me tell of my experience there. I had an appointment for a haircut, but when I got there, I was just pushed to another hairstylist on the spot. She was friendly at first, offering me tea while leading me into the hair wash station. Throughout the hairwash, she was still nice...asking if the temperature of the water was alright etc. Then, when the shampoo was over, she pushed me up and just walked right past me back into the cutting area. I was left sitting there, thinking that she would wrap a towel around my head (which was how I was treated at other salons) and then lead me back out into the cutting area. But no, she walked right past me...leaving me to follow quickly behind her into the cutting area. Before she started cutting my hair, she did not bother to towel dry my hair at all. I was sitting there dripping wet and she started clipping up my hair here and there. Long story cut short, she barely cut ANYTHING and spent over half the time blowdrying and setting my hair. Brave girl she was though, even dared to help me look at the back and asked if I liked it when she didn't do anything at all. I said I wanted to have an actual cut and change my style...and she assured me that it's actually not done and she is going to work on it still. So, she spent some time ruffling my hair and snipped a tiny bit off before yanking the gown off me without asking for my opinion at all. She said "thanks for coming today" and didn't even asked if I was satisfied with the cut or not. Terrible service, terrible quality. Only the store's layout look nice here, don't be lured in. read more

Nightmare experience! Beware of this salon. At Space I felt unliked and unwanted. The owner Michael is nice and his staff are cute except for his manager Courtney who should be fired. She's rude offensive and scary. I spent over $700 at Space on extensions. I called to confirm prices before I arrived but when I got there they tried to charge me more. Then they told me the stylist I'd booked wasn't available. I accepted the service of a another girl because Courtney told me she wouldn't charge me an extra fee. This girl was nice but has no experience. During the installation she told me she's practiced on her family at home. Courtney aggressively attacked me over pricing. Even though I had called twice in advance to confirm. I kept telling her I didn't want to cause trouble I just wanted my hair done and I would pay whatever she wanted. By the time that conversation was over I would have agreed to anything just to get her to leave me alone and get out of there with my hair still on my head. This salon expects a lot of money for poor service. It's only been a few days since I had the extensions installed and I have to go to another salon to have them fixed costing me another three hundred dollars. If you're looking for extensions don't go to Space. Go to IS Salon in Yaletown. They charge slightly more per bag but the stylist there works with the supplier, she knows what she's doing, and IS is customer friendly. read more

I am floored by my experience at Space last night. I get my long hair cut maybe once a year if that because in the past I have ALWAYS had the "dang, why did I even do this" feeling immediately after every hair cut. On top of that, I have never had my hair colour treated in a salon, I have always just thrown a box on it and been done with it. Anyways it has been a year since my last cut, and over a year since I put dye in it and I figured it was time for something new. I've been to Space before but this was unreal. The ladies at the front desk were so warm and friendly. Chloe listened to me so well, she was so present in our consultation, something I can appreciate so much from working in customer service. Complimentary lattes (if desired, I just had water), amazing head massages, great conversation, and a beautiful styling at the end of my cut. She spent almost three and a half hours giving me the most beautiful ombre I have ever seen, and a trim that made my hair way healthier without taking off much length, asking me questions along the way to make sure it ended up exactly how I wanted. So many times I've been to a salon and it feels like I am going there just to get my hair done; last night I felt like I went to the spa and happened to leave with beautiful hair. Honestly this girl deserves a medal. Thank you Chloe :) read more

The defining feature of Space is that owner Michael Levine focuses each process of the salon experience and creates customized areas for each. Enter the salon and feel as though you've walked into a cross between a salon equivalent of a hotel lobby and a boutique. At once you're greeted with the comfort of a seated area, while hair products like Bumble and bumble line both walls. Located at the back of the salon, the hair wash station is built with ultra comfortable loungers and rolling footstools available for extension at the client's leisure. Ambient music flows through this semi-secluded area where silence is truly golden. Of course, haircuts are done at the chair, but beyond that guests receiving colour treatments get the opportunity to sit at "colourspace," a colour bar fully equipped with barstools. It's a place where guests can see their stylist weigh and mix it right in front of them the way a bartender would and then apply it while they sit at the bar. Guests awaiting colour to set in are cordially invited into The Vault - a real bank vault door that opens up to a space for guests to relax while their colour processes. A long banquette lines one side of the enclosed space and flat screen TVs are available for entertainment. Great new space, great new salon! read more

I went to Space after a bad experience somewhere else. It was enough that I couldn't even wait a few weeks to get it re-cut. I was booked to see Marshall. The salon is amazing! I was offered tea, espresso, cappuccino, etc... People were incredibly friendly. I like that the shampoo area is a no-talking zone, which really lets you relax. Overall the salon was clean and inviting. Marshall was amazing! He really took the time in listening to what I liked and didn't like. He gives the scalp massages ever. As for the cut, I can honestly say that I will be his loyal customer for a long time. He was really up on the latest trends and incorporated what I wanted into a trendy sleek cut. His technique is superb and he seems truly passionate about hair. The other important factor to me is how my cut looks after I style it myself...and it looks amazing. Quick tip is to book him in advance as he lives in Vegas and only flies in every 8 weeks. But he said he's looking to move to Vancouver sometime next year. Awesome awesome experience overall. While their services are on the pricier side, my personal policy is that I would rather cut out an extra couple of lattes a month and get a great haircut that will last me a few months and make me feel and look great. read more

Highly recommended. As a long time client of Statik/Tao, I had a chance to go to the new location, Space at Broadway/Cambie. Much better "space" (no pun intended) - the layout is very open versus Tao and as noted in previous reviews a very cool bank vault door is right there midway through the salon! Also the the hair dryers are hung from the ceiling with retractable cords, very slick. OK - so the space is hip, edgy, etc. so how's the cut? In short, great, thanks to Chelsea, my stylist. She asked very specific questions about what I wanted, how I styled my hair, product I used, etc. before the cut and kept following up during the cut to make sure the length, etc. was what I was expecting. No surprise - my hair ended up exactly how I wanted it, Also, you know how you get the straggler hairs on your shirt collar that itch like crazy, Chelsea really rinsed my hair so well after the cut and for the first time that I can remember, no straggler hairs at all and no itch after a cut - great attention to detail. Fantastic experience all around. On the website, it says "Our goal isn't to be the best hair salon in Vancouver. It's to take care of you so well that YOU think we are the best salon in Vancouver." Mission accomplished. read more

All I have to say is go see Chloe. I have never written a review for anything before, but I guess that's because I've never been so completely blown away that I felt the need to. I went to Space Salon to get my hair re-highlighted and from the moment Chloe came over to greet me, I knew that I had made the right choice in coming to this salon. After previously experiencing the worst coloring/service from a well known salon in Vancouver, I was ready to never step foot in a salon again. Well thank god I decided to give Space Salon a shot, because I will never have to go through the stress of searching for a stylist who is friendly, approachable, understanding, professional....need I say more? Chloe was all that and more. She listened to all I had to say and then solidified all my ideas by giving me her input, ending with me in near tears as my hair turned out exactly as I had hoped. I really can't give her a good enough review - she went above and beyond to make sure I had a comfortable experience and left with exactly what I wanted. She seemed to love what she does and love working at Space and it definitely showed through her work and I cant thank her and Space Salon enough. read more

First of all, the salon itself is clean, modern and has a nice positive vibe. I've now been there three times and would highly recommend anyone to see Jaelyn! I walked in months ago with a million colors in my hair including black box dye. I had seen so many different hair stylists in the past who just didn't understand what I wanted. I explained to Jaelyn that I wanted to go grey but keep my roots dark. What I LOVED about her response was the honesty and transparency. She didn't just say yeah let's do this ...she explained that the way my hair is now,it will take time patience and money. My first appointment was color correction, second was lightening and by the third appointment I had a dream grey. My hair should have been FRIED after this process but it wasn't at all. She used a new ish product called olaplex which kept the damage as minimal as possible. She asked me to trust her and I did and it was so worth it. It's not a cheap salon by no means; but I can tell you it's worth it. If you want to trust someone with your color, have it done right and have fun while you do it,go see Jaelyn!! read more

I always look forward to seeing Ryan when I book with Space Salon. Even though I only go a few times a year, Ryan always remembers our previous conversations and is ready to listen to whatever ideas I might have about cut and colour. I have long hair and in the past have found it hard to trust a stylist. Many times I have been encouraged to cut more than I have wanted to. However, I fully trust Ryan to make my hair look and feel beautiful and after each cut I swear my hair looks longer than it did before the appointment! Ryan has lightened and darkened my hair several times and the colour always looks natural and healthy. I have received so many compliments about my hair since I started going to Space and having Ryan as my stylist, that I will be a loyal customer for as long as I have hair! Also, with every visit I feel attended to by all the staff and well taken care of. Thank you so much for another AMAZING experience!!! read more

I decided to try Space Salon after having several botched hair cuts and highlights at other salons in Vancouver. As a person with very curly hair, it has been VERY hard for me to find someone who knew how to properly cut curly hair, and at the same time, show we creative ways to style it. When I called Space, I was recommended to go to Alina, and I have NEVER looked back. Although the cost is quite high, I completely think it's worth it to have a hair cut and color that looks fabulous every time. I also wanted to thank Space for the excellent service that they offer. Every time I go in the salon, I am instantly welcomed, and provided a nice warm drink to enjoy while I get my hair done. It is always a wonderful experience. Thank you Space for providing a top of the line salon in Vancouver! read more

I have always had trouble finding a great hair dresser because of my curly fuzzy hair. However my sister found Erin, previously at Caramel, when she was just starting to cut hair. Every hair cut I get from her I love. I trust her so much that when I go in I tell her to do what ever she feels like. I have short hair and most stylists would just give you a basic hair cut but I always leave Erin with a cool new look. Through the years it has started getting a little harder to book an appointment with her because more people have heard of her however she is worth the wait. You never leave without her making sure everything is perfect. My sister and I love her and if we can help we will never have a need to find another hair dresser! Erin your the best!! read more

For most of my life I had nothing but bad experiences when it comes to haircuts. Each time I tried someone new I was hopeful that this was the one that would finally get it right but after each haircut I would race home, wash my hair and swear "never again"! That all changed the first time I set foot into Tao. I followed my stylist to Space and I haven't looked back since. I have had the opportunity to visit five different stylists and I would happily return to any of them (although two have left Space). Each stylist listens, understands what I'm looking for and delivers it. The entire experience, right from walking in the door, is pleasant and one that I eagerly anticipate. Thank you Chloe, Marc and Devon. read more

I walked in to book an appointment and Jon was at the desk and said he'd love to work with my naturally curly hair!! Also loves working with the red colours, which I am partial to! I am so happy with the results and have had more compliments on my colour than ever, including from other hair stylists!! The salon is great too!! Trendy and functional at the same time! I love the colour bar, the vault, the quiet space a a beautiful head massage....!! Clearly I'm a very happy new customer and highly recommend Space and Jon to anyone!! read more

I can't say enough about Space and especially Alina. I got referred to her by a friend when my regular hairdresser was unable to take me for over two months and I was going on vacation. I get so many compliments on the amazing colour and highlights she does that changes slightly with the season or mood each time. The cut is amazing and my hair has never been so full and healthy. I see some comments regarding price but it is really worth it. I tried another local salon and it cost more and was not nearly as good with the red colour bleeding for over 4 weeks. Reminds me...time for another appointment. read more

When I first moved to Vancouver 5 years ago I was at a loss to find a place for a great cut! My sister had a coupon for 50% your first visit to Caramel and I became a customer for life! Alina is AMAZING! I had her for that first cut and I have been with her ever since. She makes you feel at ease in the chair and my hair has never looked so good! She is meticulous about her cuts and genuinely wants you to be happy with her work. I have followed Alina from Caramel to Statik, then Tao and now Space. I couldn't be happier with Space Salon. It is so welcoming! read more

After 2.5 years of living in Vancouver I have finally found a good blonde colourist that understood what I wanted. Chelsea was awesome! She talked the talk and totally got my colour and cut right. The price was right, the service was fantastic. Chelsea is definitely on the up and up. A new stylist to Vancouver after moving from the Island, I see big things ahead for her. The salon its self was amazing. They have done a superb job. If you unhappy with your current stylist, even a tiny bit make the change, you wont be sorry. read more

My girl Natalie at Space is quite honestly the best hairdresser I've ever had. She doesn't rush through either the awesome head massage and wash nor the cut. I have long, extremely thick and curly hair, and I always walk out of there with an awesome cut that feels lighter but still keeps great curl. My cut needs to be good for a wash and dash lifestyle, and it's perfect everytime with Natalie! Love the expresso, love the relaxing shampoo room, love the convenient location! read more
