So, in mid 2011 I got in to gaming and was looking to
upgrade my PC to something a little more substantial. After a while of trying
to figure out what I needed, I decided to look into getting the opinion of an
expert. If it helps I am a student who is rather in the know when it comes to
technology, but I didn't want to spend £200 on upgrades that didn't work.
Basically, I needed a hand to hold. I search for a local computer shop, found SP Computers
and decide that is the place to go. Although being provided with adequate customer
service which was not particularly poor I got the feeling that the person that
served me knew a little more than me but not that much. After being handed to
another employee who (seemed) to know what he was on about, I decided on
getting a new graphics card (at about £140) and it was soon discovered that I
would need a new power supply too. It must be said that the price of the graphics card was
not too much over what it was online and I had gotten their advice at this time
I was happy to go ahead and get this new card. Because I was not sure how to
install it or anything however, I paid for them to do it. Please remember that
I paid money for them to install it. At no point did I turn around, after
getting their advice, and get it myself to save a whole load of money; I wanted
it done professionally and most importantly, safely. I didn't want to ruin my
computer by doing it incorrectly. Back to the issue with the power supply obviously after
upgrading to a new graphics card which now needs its own power, I was going to
need a beefier power supply. That's when the 'less in the know' employee stuck
his ore in and suggested a power supply that he had in his hand. It was
sufficient in wattage for my computer, and being very eager to use my computer
(and not very knowledgeable at all), I bought it. Again, I was going here for
expertise Or so I thought. On to what you're
actually reading this for So, it turns out that this power supply at 650 watts,
which was sold at a little over £50.00, was actually a cheap £20 bog standard
power supply which was not at all rated for gaming gaming, something I made
CLEAR when I went there. Feeling a little scammed after discovering this a few
months later, I was then sceptical of the long term service. A month or two
after the installation it starts humming and dear me when I say it starts
humming, IT HUMS LIKE A LAWN MOWER. I thought it was just a teething problem
and carried on. I still know very little about computers at this point. A few months later it gets worse, rattling, humming,
ticking, you name it on and off, sometimes it would and sometimes it
wouldn't. Don't ask me why. It then dawned on me that I should see what on
earth they put in my recently and expensively upgraded PC I then find out it
is a cheap piece of you know what. I wanted a quality power supply which, for
£50, was what I thought I was getting. I was then worried that this may be damaging my rather
expensive (I am a student so £140 is a lot) graphics card So I take it back
and ask them to look in to it and fix the rattling and the humming. This is
about 9 months after original purchase. I know it is a long time and in all
honesty I feel stupid for not doing it sooner but I didn't want to make a fuss,
I'm one of those people I suppose. After a very nonchalant glance they keep it
in overnight to 'tighten things up a little'. No, they did jack (NOTHING). I
got it back and it was worse. A few days ago (2013) I decided to clean out my PC and
now, being a little more in the know, decided to clean the graphics card I
bought. I pull it out to discover the protective film still on it with a
glaringly large sticker saying 'REMOVE BEFORE USE'. 'I'm sorry. What!?' I
paid them to install it and then they don't even do it correctly. Maybe it's
not such an issue or maybe it is who knows. All I know is, it's damn unprofessional
and shows a complete lack of respect to customers. To this day I'm still using the same set up, if you take
anything from this it should be that you shouldn't trust this company to do
their job properly. I feel like I've been had, I honestly do. All that's in my
power now is to stick this review on any site I can find. I currently study law and recently covered something
which talks about how consumers shouldn't have to check work that they aren't
fully aware and competent in like computers, which reminded me that I
shouldn't have to check the quality of work and installations done by this
unprofessional company. Maybe it's just me, or maybe they've changed But all
I can say is 'Caveat Emptor' Latin for 'let the buyer beware'. I don't want
anyone else getting ripped off. So, if you do, which I don't advise, use this
company, Google the products they're trying to fob you off with before you get
them and check he job they've done after not that you should have to. I know for sure that I will
never use them again, and am advising everyone I know to avoid them read more
