So far I've tried boxing, strength, and flow. When I showed up for boxing, the atmosphere was incredibly welcoming. The woman who signed me up for the class even showed up to make sure I made it and introduce me to the instructor. She wasn't even scheduled to work--she just came and left after. The instructor Midge was very nice and inspirational and the entire class said hello and made me feel comfortable. Strength class kicked my butt. It was packed, fast paced, and I should have arrived earlier than ten minutes beforehand (ok, eight minutes beforehand). Flow class this morning was a great choice to stretch out my sore muscles from yesterday. Onward to my last trial class this week: cycling!

And despite being up since 9 AM (which is early for me on a weekend, k?), I actually want to workout right now at my new gym: Los Campeones. *Note: I don't really drink energy drinks, and I'm pretty sure -- since I'm so hype on caffeine -- my typing could annihilate the world record. I'm. So. Not. Sleepy. #editingthisreviewisabitdifficult Before I get into Los Campeones, for reference, below are the different types of gyms I've worked out at in my lifetime: A) THE NO-NONESE GYM: With tons of free weights and machines, people visit there to get their swole-on and give hella stink-eye to peeps that mess around doin' nothin'. (Make sure your playlist is on point, playa! Ain't no time for that!) It's usually owned by someone older, yet hella strong. B) CORPORATE GYM: Both Lifetime Fitness and LA Fitness fall under this umbrella. Sure, the degrees of fancy vary, but these types of gyms usually offer classes of some sort. Overall, their membership prices are significantly more expensive. C) CROSSFIT GYM: Can be pretentious and cultish. Classes occur only at certain times and the monthly price may cause you to reconsider splurging while buying groceries. (But price may not matter, since you'll likely be eating paleo anyway.) Benefits: Short time and high intensity workouts do increase overall fitness -- and your booty will be more "apple-bottom" like; however, chances for injury may increase. D) YOGA CHAIN: I was the sweaty guy doing the "tree pose" in the back and falling everywhere. (BTW, there's usually that one person who farts and ruins it for errone.) Los Campeones falls under Category A, and it's the type of gym I prefer. At first glance, it might resemble a Snap Fitness. You know, a place that has plenty of treadmills, climbers, barbells, benches, racks, and free weights aka the bare necessities. But what separates this place from others is their basement. It's covered in fake grass and ideal for specialized high-interval workouts, swinging kettle bells, and other activities that usually require more room. I love it. People go there to workout. Ish is serious, ya'll. Aside from the gym itself, I love their low prices: -$45/ month (automatically deducts from your account). -$55/ month (opting not to use auto-pay). - $65/ month (for couples). Some other costs exist, such as the yearly maintenance fee (which is over $50, I think). Regarding the parking situation, it's kind of difficult. This Los Campeones location resides on one-ways, and their tiny lot fills up during peak hours. I suggest parking on Blaisdell Avenue or 28th on the left (north) side.

I was a little concerned when I had a hard time finding early morning or late evening sessions to attend. Turns out I just needed to expand my search. Now that I've found the NE location it's going to be my home base for my fitness rediscovery. I am sore today just enough to remind me that I have these muscles and to regret my long departure from the gym but not severe enough to hinder daily activity or intimidate me away from going back. This is not your momma's or daddy's old-school gym. You don't walk in and start using equipment half-cocked: they only do 30 minute appointments, recommended twice a week, either 1:1 or in a small group (up to three clients together). You do ONE set with as many reps as you can until you can't do any more with perfect form, and then move on to the next exercise. Trust me, 30 minutes is plenty of time to get your @$$ kicked in the best possible way. I work primarily with Lawrence, but sometimes I don't book far enough ahead and he's unavailable (because he's in high demand) so I have worked out with Edwin, Chris, Luke, and Allie. All of them are deeply knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in my progress. They make the burn fun and worthwhile, and they are very clearly extremely educated and know their stuff, ALL of them. I've been going six months now very consistently, and I'm so pleased with my results. I'll do my first body composition assessment tomorrow (Bod Pod) and I'm very keen to see where I'm at. The staff was super friendly and helpful and I was able to work out a few days this week. The gym itself is ultra-clean, which has always been a priority for me but even more so in the age of covid. From a size perspective, North Loop Fitness is perfect for me: bigger than a typical trainer-only or crossfit gym, but smaller than a big box gym. The equipment is modern and well maintained and they have a strip down the middle of the gym for sleds (!). I wish, wish I could find an exact replica of this gym in Omaha.

They cut out a lot of the crap that you find at some of the bigger gyms in town and replaced it with a "back-to-basics" sort of work-out attitude. Machines, cardio equipment, free weights, and more, are nicely complemented by some effective gym class staples like medicine balls, climbing ropes and jump ropes. The personal training is top notch and though I have yet to take a class, I am told their offerings (boot camps, kettle balls, yoga, etc.) are great. In addition to great equipment, flat screen tvs, clean showers/locker-rooms, tanning, and a knowledgeable and attentive staff, NLF is open 24-hours a day. What more could you ask for? Hmm...... maybe free liposuction and somebody to come drag me off the couch and to the gym every evening?

I arrived about 7 minutes early for class and the large gym space had about three people inside. The front desk was empty and there was no real way to know what to do to get checked in. I asked another person what I should do and she told me the instructor would be there any minute . A few more people came in right before class along with the instructor. The direction was to do the warm up. As someone new I expected a little bit of an overview and a warmer welcome. I introduced myself and said this is my first class so I don't know what to expect. The directions weren't much different than "warm up". I asked a few questions so I could understand the format of the class. Once I got this was strictly weight training with a circuit like format decided to just go with the flow. The workout itself was slow in the beginning, there was quite a bit of downtime and talking from other people in the class. While the workout was challenging I felt the directions and modeling were lacking. The gym itself was much like a large auxiliary gym and it appeared to be a shared space that isn't well managed because things were out of place, dusty, and someone else was trying to use the same equipment as the class during the class. Overall I think I got a good workout but there is some room for improvement to the space and operations.

The ECC is my back-up fitness center for whenever I'm looking for a satisfying run but the…read moreweather's cruddy. Eaganites should be very happy to have such a top-notch place to work out. Their indoor track is my favorite in the South Metro & St. Paul area: rubberized, 3 lanes of comfortable width, 11 laps/mile. It's suspended above the Community Center's basketball courts, which is great for two reasons. 1) It's out of the way so you don't have to worry about people meandering onto the track. 2) There's usually some practice or game going on, which means you'll have a bit of incidental entertainment as you exercise. Also, they have several bays of floor-to-ceiling windows along the one wall, so unlike some basement-like facilities, you'll get to enjoy some natural light as you put in the miles. This facility is clean with a capital C. Everything is spotless--the track, the equipment, even the locker rooms were in impeccable condition. The building's over a decade old (built in 2003, if I recall correctly), but it still looks shiny and new. Pricing is very reasonable; since I'm here fairly infrequently I utilize the walking-track-only day pass, which is less than $5. However, please be aware that this option is not available Monday-Friday between 4-7pm. For a few more bucks you can get full run (no pun intended) of the fitness center with no restrictions. There's all sorts of membership options, of course, that you can find on the website. They have fitness classes and personal training available at the ECC as well. I've never used these services, but it's worth mentioning they exist. Spacious, un-pretentious, affordable, easy to get to, easy to park, friendly staff, never crowded... ultimately, a good gym, and a great amenity for the people of Eagan (and surrounding areas).

The excellent maintenance ensures that all equipment is impeccable and greatly enhancing the overall gym experience. There is a lot of space and more than enough weights that you won't be waiting for them. The trainers are some of the best in the city. This fitness center allows me to focus on my training because there's no pretense, no need for "cool" workout clothing, age is not a deterrent. My level of fitness and my goals are 100% respected. Unlike most gyms, almost all of the members here actually are on friendly terms and you'll probably be greeted by name at the door. This also holds me accountable to show up and keep me on my health goals. Its so easy to give up but this place gives you that extra push to keep going. I need that and I am so appreciative that this gym and all the staff and members are such good people. Just meet the Owner Jason and you will understand.
